Green IT key findings
Environmental & social impacts Concentrated in Building & End Of Life (EOL) Electronic components & flat screens Solution?
Embodied energie & GHG emissions Embodied energy Energy used all along the life ycle Build => Distribute => Use => End of Life (EOL) Emission factors of GHG Building area China : ~1 kg CO2eq / kwh Use area France / Switzerland : ~0,1 kg CO2eq / kwh OECD : ~0,5 kg CO2eq / kwh 2011 MacBook Pro 15 Build : 331 kq CO2eq Use (1 year) : 4,1 kg CO2eq / an 100x + GHG to build in China than to use it 1 year in France / Suisse Source : Source : Fujitsu, 2011
Social impacts Child soldier & slavery «Conflict minerals» Unsafe working conditions And of course : your health Mineral extraction Manufacturing «Recycling»
To avoid all that, are we extending life span?
Computer life span divided by 3 in one generation Electronical life time 10 to 25 years Active life span divided by 3 in 25 years Life time 3 to 15 years 1985 2000 2005 2007 2013 10,7 years Source : 5,5 years 3,6 years 2,5 years 4 years Easy to upgrade, repair, refurbish, depolute / recycle Hard to impossible to upgrade, repair, refurbish, depolute / recycle
Software is THE leverage Planned obsolescence but Electronical life span way longer than service life Computers are note trashed because they no longer work but because they are to slow to execute new software versions. 71x + RAM in 12 years Hardware service life directly linked to software computing ressources need Source : Computing power x2 each 3 years! Imagine that you need a 71x more powerfull engine to drive same kilometers at the same speed!
Utilisateurs Fabricants 2 ways to reduce ICT footprint 2 complementary ways Priority : extend life span Less urgent : reduce kwh / printings ecodesign Refurbish Key actions Hardware ecodesign : on track Software ecodesign : emerging Extend life time : off scope Don t recycle : reuse : emerging Power savings should not be a Green ICT priority! Extend life span Reduce Colect e- energy, waste paper, etc. Source :
1. How to align ICT with corporate CSR strategy? Most common Green IT projects Trends
Most common Green IT projects User environment (front office) 2. Power management (desktop, screen, imaging equipments) 2. Reduce office printing 6. Equipment lifetime / service life extension (guaranty extension, ecolabel, etc.) Company environment (back office) 1. Data center energy efficiency 8. Software ecodesign Cross-cutting issues 7. Assessments : Green IT, energy efficiency, GHG emissions, etc. 5. Green IT strategy and governance tools 3. Sustainable ICT procurement 4. e-waste management
Drivers Short term savings in Investments (CAPEX) Operation costs (OPEX) Environment Financial internal & external branding Internal Retain young employees To show that the computing department is actively involved in CSR policy External : To show that all the comapny is actively involved in CSR policy Contribute to company CSR targets Reduce ecological footprint Logistics & manufacturing process optimisation New more eco-friendly products & services creation (enabler)
Major trends Power saving is king (unfortunately) Everybody wants you to «save power (in the use phase) to reduce GHG emissions» Quickwin with easy to prove ROI despite major savings are due to life span extension ; few GHG emission in countries like France, Switzerland, etc. Software ecodesign emerge Continuous improvment process Lightweight and easy to implement Huge return on investment (ROI) Digital services CSR performance analysis will shortly be a must have How to enhance CSR performance of digital products & services? Direct link with hardware and sofrware ecodesign From Green IT to sustainable ICT «Sustainability» sucks compared to «Digital» Companies are refocusing on «Digital innovation» Sustainable ICT future is linked with our ability to add the «responsible / sustainable» word in «Digital Company strategy»
3. Impacts on skills, knowledge & jobs New skills & knowledge needed New jobs
Many very differents subjects to deal with Desktop power management Extending life span E-waste management Software ecodesign Datacenter energy efficiency Sustainable ICT procurement Green IT, energy, GHG assessments Green IT governance tools Office printing reduction Internal and external communication Digital products CSR performance analysis
Green IT is a new way of doing ICT, not a new job Only few new jobs Green IT manager (internal) Green IT consultant (external) Green IT experts (external) : print, data center, software., etc. Green IT is not a new job, that s a new way of doing ICT gene to introduce in existing ICT jobs DNA in between what happened with security & open source Companies lack basic Green IT knowledge while this would help them build an effective Green IT strategy This means that real needs are Change management to convince every ICT guy Short specific trainings by domain to make ICT team operational Green IT manager are lost and ask for Green IT support / coaching Companies also need high-value specific expertise : software ecodesign, data center power efficiency, etc.
Basic skills & knowledge Balance between sustainability & ICT skills ICT Usual technical skills 5 to 10 years experimented to have an overview : Key parameters / sensitivity points for each projects To know how an Information System works Sustainable development Basic skills about sustainable development Very precise knowledge about ICT environnemental & social impacts ICT LCA findings : what to focus on? GHG emission factors : scope 2 & 3 Etc.

Green IT & sustainable ICT jobs in 2025
Conclusion Most «new» sustainable ICT jobs won t emerge. It s too late. We need accurate knowledge and specific skills in priority for every computer scientist Companies are not focusing on extending life span because they don t even know concepts like embodied energy and GHG emission factors. We don t need experts, but usual ICT profiles + specific sustainable ICT skills For example, a student in software development : Kwoledge : leverage of software in reducing hardware footprint Skills : software green design patterns Nobody s waiting for ICT to solve sustainable issues although ICT is a «key enabler» : think about car-sharing without the web site, e-mail & mobile phones It s up to us to help companies add the sustainable dimension to ICT providing them : software and hardware ecodesign Skilled and knowledgeable ICT team employees
