Network Installation of OmniPage Pro 12 Office Introduction Network installation enables a system administrator to push applications out to client computers without the need to visit each client system. The administrator can place an image of an application s install program on a server, and then configure the server to automatically push the application onto the client system. Both MS Windows 2000 Server and MS System Management Server (SMS) support this type of network installation. Windows 2000 Server with Active Directory Active Directory is a feature of Windows 2000 Server. Group Policy, a component of Active Directory, includes a Software Installation snap-in that enables an administrator to create a network installation. The administrator can install software to Windows 2000 or Windows XP clients. The administrator cannot use the snap-in to install to clients with older versions of the Windows operating system. Active Directory supports three main installation scenarios: Publish to Users, Assign to Users, and Assign to Computers. Publish to Users will advertise the program in Add/Remove Programs in the user s Control Panel. The program will not be installed until the user chooses to add it. Assign to Users will also advertise the program, but it will be available from a Start Menu shortcut, a Desktop shortcut, and from Add/Remove programs in the user s Control Panel. Assign to Computers will install the software on the computer during the next computer reboot. 1

OmniPage Pro 12 Office supports the Assign to Computers scenario and will successfully install the software when the computer is rebooted. It can be delayed on Windows XP clients when the administrator enables logon optimization for group policy. The installation takes place silently, and the software is installed for all users on the computer. OmniPage Pro 12 Office does not support Publish to Users or the Assign to Users scenarios. Active Directory also supports ZAP files as a mechanism for installing programs that are not compatible with Microsoft Windows Installer. Because OmniPage Pro 12 Office is Windows Installer compatible, ZAP files are not necessary. Creating the SerNum.mst Windows Installer transform file 1. Launch the MkMst12.exe utility located in the OmniPage\Tools folder on the OmniPage Pro 12 Office installation CD. You can click Cancel to close the wizard at any time. 2. Click Next on the Welcome screen. 2

3. In the OmniPage folder, browse for the OmniPage Pro 12.0.msi Windows Installer package. 4. Specify a name and a location for the generated transform file. Be sure you have write privileges for the destination folder. 5. Click Next. 6. Enter your product serial number in the xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxx format. 7. Select the Exclude ScanSoft RealSpeak check box if you do not want to install the ScanSoft Text to Speech module. You may want to install it if you are assigning OmniPage Pro 12 Office to users. Although assigning or publishing to users is not thoroughly tested, if the targeted users have appropriate privileges for installing the software and the ScanSoft RealSpeak installation is disabled, OmniPage Pro 12 Office can install successfully. 8. Click Finish to generate the transform file. Deployment example Requirements: A deployment target computer that is a member of a domain, site, or organizational unit A working Active Directory environment The SerNum.mst transform file 1. Perform an administrative installation of OmniPage Pro 12 Office with the following command line: Msiexec.exe /a OmniPage Pro 12.0.msi 2. Select Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Active Directory Users and Computers. 3. Right-click the site, domain, or organizational unit that contains the deployment computer. 4. Select Properties, click the Group Policy Tab, and then click New. 5. Specify a descriptive name. 6. Click Edit. 7. In the Group Policy Window, right-click Computer Configuration/Software Settings/Software Installation. 3

8. Click New, and then click Package. 9. In the target folder of the administrative installation, select OmniPage Pro 12.0.msi from the list. 10. Select "Advanced Published or assigned". 11. Click the Modifications tab, and click Add to add the MST file. 4

Systems Management Server Systems Management Server (SMS) provides a mechanism for pushing application installations out from the server to client systems. SMS supports all versions of Windows, but is limited to Windows 95, 98, Me, NT 4.0, 2000, and XP when installing products that use Windows Installer (MSI) technology. SMS requires that a client application be installed on all client machines. OmniPage Pro 12 Office was tested using SMS version 2.0 with Service Pack 4. SMS enables you to deploy a setup package per User or per System. OmniPage Pro 12 Office has been verified to work in the per System configuration. It has not been tested in the per User configuration. The per System installation of OmniPage Pro 12 Office can be configured to either run unattended or attended. Instructions for controlling this are provided below. OmniPage Pro 12 Office uses Windows Installer Technology. Microsoft has published a document that describes using Windows Installer-based applications with SMS. The document, entitled Deploying Windows Installer Setup Packages with Systems Management Server 2.0, is available from http://www.microsoft.com/smserver/techinfo/deployment/20/ 5

Deploying OmniPage Pro 12 Office from ad SMS server 1. Prepare an administrator installation of OmniPage Pro 12 Office by using the Windows Installer /a command-line option: Msiexec.exe /a OmniPage Pro 12.0.msi 2. When specifying the command line on the General tab of the Program Properties dialog, use one of the following command-line options: To run the installation unattended, use the following command line: msiexec /i "omnipage pro 12.0.msi" ISX_SERIALNUM="12345-123- 123456" /q ALLUSERS="1" where "12345-123-123456" is your unique OmniPage Pro 12 Office serial number. To run the installation attended, use this command line: msiexec /i "omnipage pro 12.0.msi" ISX_SERIALNUM="12345-123- 123456" where "12345-123-123456" is your unique OmniPage Pro 12 Office serial number. 6
