Life at James Cook University Queen Street Mall, Brisbane The Campus and Location Brisbane is Australia's New World City; with a diverse multicultural population of over 2.2 million, making Brisbane a centre of creativity and invention. The city provides students with forward- thinking educational providers and world-class research facilities all in a subtropical climate. Brisbane is a safe and friendly city with a generous community spirit and weather that creates an outdoor lifestyle. Australia's low crime rates and Brisbane's comparatively lower living expenses and tuition costs, makes the city one of the most liveable and safest places in the world. James Cook University Brisbane Campus is a modern high rise building, centrally located in the Central Business District (CBD) located on Queen Street. Students have access to study space, computer stations, high speed internet and WiFi, leisure and activity rooms, all within walking distance of the riverfront, Queen Street's main shopping mall, city library and the many shops, parks and cafes that the city has to offer. The campus is easily accessible via the many forms of public transport which is heavily discounted to students. Sense of Family JCU Brisbane is renowned for its friendliness and sense of family. Students will enjoy a supportive study environment, highly qualified lecturers with industry experience and a welcoming atmosphere that emphasises personal contact between students and staff. Trimester System The JCU Brisbane academic calendar caters for three study periods (or trimesters) beginning in March, July and November. This arrangement allows students to complete more subjects per year than a standard semester program traditionally operating at other Australian universities. JCU Brisbane is the only JCU campus in Australia to operate a trimester model. Student Concierge Student Concierge is our most direct interface with our students, and contributes significantly to an enhanced student experience through positive engagement. Customer service is of our highest priority providing; promptness, completeness, consistency and accessibility to all areas of the University. The Student Concierge team works with students to ensure that study at James Cook University Brisbane is a memorable and enriched experience. Student Mentor Program The Student Mentor Program was implemented in July 2009 to help new students adapt to university life and be a part of the JCU Brisbane community to enhance their learning experience and study outcomes. This program matches a student (mentee) with a mentor, who is a current student wanting to share their knowledge and experiences with new students. The mentor process begins each trimester when students are matched according to their field of study or discipline. This program is facilitated by the Mentor Coordinator and Student Mentors and is available to both new and current students. Language and Learning Centre The Language and Learning Centre is staffed by qualified and experienced Learning Advisers who work with students to give practical advice and strategies to master the English academic language skills needed to study successfully in an Australian university. Learning Advisers work with students from all programs and at all levels to help improve academic language skills. Students who experience difficulty adjusting to the academic requirements of tertiary study through to high achieving students who are aiming for excellence can all be supported and assisted by a Learning Adviser. Learning Advisers also work closely with the Faculty to ensure that the help students get is targeted toward their studies. The Language and Learning Centre offers a drop- in service, one-to-one appointments and small group workshops which are advertised regularly. This means that students have an abundance of opportunities to get the support, advice and assistance needed to succeed. Student Council The JCU Brisbane Student Council is a team of enthusiastic and self-motivated students who aim to build a bridge of communication between students and JCU Brisbane staff by representing the students in matters and concerns that may affect them within the university environment. The Student Council's mission is to be the voice and to act on behalf of all JCU Brisbane students for education that is accessible, equitable and free from discrimination. The council aims to provide discussion and debates that are beneficial to improving the campus facilities and services; and to promote educational, social, cultural and recreational student activities through regular events. Dean's Academic Award All enrolled students are eligible to compete for the Dean's Academic Award. This award program is specifically designed for students enrolled in Brisbane programs. Awards are of monetary value. The Dean's Academic Awards gives all students in eligible programs the recognition for their high academic achievements throughout their stay at JCU Brisbane and ultimately makes them eligible to compete for a JCU university medal. Helton Amilcar de Sa Master of Professional Accounting Brazil I really appreciate the confidence James Cook University Brisbane showed in me by giving me this excellent internship. I was looking for a big company with an excellent reputation in the market and they found me exactly that. Everything that I have learnt about good business practice, I can now see in a real workplace. It is so important to put in practice what you have been learning in class. This opportunity is so important to improve my qualifications as well as achieve my future goals. Leading Our Students To Work Through Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Work Integrated Learning (WIL) At JCU Brisbane, Work-Integrated Learning means that students learn through a unique combination of practical, professional experiences and classroom study. It means they can expect to have the opportunity to learn in ways which are linked to the real world of business. It means they will be able to apply theory to their chosen profession; will be able to solve complex business issues; work with clients and industry leaders; and it means they will become more attractive to employers as a fully-prepared work-ready graduate Why is it important Employers want confident graduates who can demonstrate through their studies that they have the knowledge, skills and professional experience to work in a highly globalised, complex world. Business graduates who undertake industryrelated experiences as part of their degree are in high demand. Graduates who have worked on projects with public or private organisations, were coached by executives, or have worked as interns in companies significantly increase their employment prospects. The James Cook University degree is built around providing its students with as many work-integrated learning experiences as possible WIL at JCU Brisbane WIL at JCU Brisbane is maximised through using a range of activities and experiences to expose students to a variety of authentic industryrelated situations. This can include professional internships, working in a group, visiting Australian business or having corporate leader s work with students in the classroom. The scope and variety of real-life learning experiences is limitless and JCU Brisbane ensures students are engaging with industry at every level of their degree. Participating in work-integrated learning assists students to make connections between classroom theory and workplace practice. It gives insights into students chosen occupation, improves their understanding of the real world of business and enhances international employment opportunities. Bachelor of Business (Work Experience) In the Bachelor of Business (all Majors), students are required to participate in work experience subjects which will see them a) enrolled in a multi-disciplinary subject as part of a student group or (b) working in a professional industry environment learning from people in a selected company*. These subjects are a unique opportunity for international students to gain insight and experience of Australian work environments and Australian companies and earn credit toward their Bachelor degree. Masters Degree Internship All Master degree programs at JCU Brisbane contain an option for students to engage with the business community through a practical or research project unit which provides an opportunity to compliment theory learnt in the classroom through an internship* in the real world of business. Being part of a corporate team and working together with various business units and / or community groups facilitates a thorough understanding and invaluable insight into Australian corporate life thus enhancing career opportunities. WIL in all Degrees In all JCU Brisbane degrees WIL experiences occur in different subjects and form part of the degree structure. For example, some subjects include site visits to internationally recognised companies, corporate executives are invited onto the campus to discuss current business issues, real-world projects are in-sourced for students to work on, and students can be given the opportunity to pitch business ideas to entrepreneurs. WIL is central to learning at JCU Brisbane and students can be assured of a rich, industry-related learning experience that will set them up for life. 8 www.jcub.edu.au 9

Courses Information: www.jcub.edu.au/courses.aspx Undergraduate Courses Your Academic Pathway into the Bachelor of Business (BBus) degree Standard Duration 3 Trimesters Total No. of Subjects 8 Intakes March, July and November OVERVIEW The JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) provides a flexible opportunity for international students to make the transition from secondary school into undergraduate studies. This program allows students who are not eligible to enrol directly into an undergraduate program to achieve a quality Australian University qualification through a highly regarded university. Australian education has different teaching styles and different learning expectations. These differences of culture, language and educational systems experienced by international students can be, at times, challenging. As such, students can require particular assistance. The JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) is taken as an alternative to the first year of the Bachelor of Business program when a student s background indicates the need for extended teaching and learning support to progress in the Australian educational system. Students receive more class time than those in the Bachelor of Business program. Enrolling in the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) program does not extend the duration of the Bachelor of Business degree. The JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) plus the Bachelor of Business degree package can still be completed within three (3) years, because direct credit is given for the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) towards the Bachelor of Business at JCU. ADVANCED STANDING CREDIT INTO DIPLOMA Students are eligible for up to two (2) subject credits from prior learning at an appropriate level* into the Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies). Note: There are no exemptions from CU1022 or CS1022. *Subject to JCU approval ADVANCED STANDING CREDIT FROM DIPLOMA INTO BACHELOR Completion of the JCU Diploma of Higher Education (Business Studies) gains an advanced standing of eight (8) subject credits towards the JCU Bachelor of Business with a single major. Permission to work in Australia will be automatically included when the student is granted with a student visa. The work conditions for the spouse will vary depending on the degree that is being studying. Bringing Family Spouses and children can join the student in Australia but each family member must be added to the student visa application, and certain conditions will apply depending on the age of each member. If the children will be attending school while in Australia, school fees will need to be paid for them. For more information, visit: www.eqi.com.au/programs/dependant-student. html ESOS Act and Tuition Protection Service As a provider of education services to international students in Australia, James Cook University is required to comply with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (The National Code). The ESOS legislation and National Code specify minimum standards for the delivery of courses to students in Australia studying on a student visa and regulate what information must be given to existing and prospective international students, what support must be provided to existing students, what records are kept and what information is to be given to government agencies about international students. For more information visit the ESOS Act webpage. JCU s Tuition Fee Policy for International Students applies to overseas students who do not commence their studies with JCU, or withdraw before their course is completed. The Policy sets out the circumstances in which a student is entitled to a refund as required under the ESOS Act, and can be found at: www.jcu.edu.au/policy/ student/finance/jcudev_005357 Important Information The Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is a placement and refund service for international students studying on a student visa which also operates under the ESOS Act. The TPS replaces the Tuition Assurance Scheme and the ESOS Assurance Fund. On the rare occasions that a provider is unable to deliver a course an international student has paid for and does not meet its legal obligations to make alternative course replacements or provide a refund, the TPS will assist students to find an alternative place or, if this is not possible, provide a refund of any unspent tuition fees. For further information see: www.tps.gov.au/information/students/how Deferral, Temporary Suspension or Cancellation of Enrolment The ESOS National Code and student visa conditions contain restrictions on when students, or JCU, can defer, suspend or cancel student enrolment. Deferring commencement of study, or taking a leave of absence once studies have commenced can only take place when there are compassionate or compelling reasons for doing so. A compassionate or compelling reason is something which is beyond the student s control and which has, or will have, an impact on academic progress or wellbeing. The University may suspend a student temporarily, enforcing a break from study, in certain circumstances. For more information on deferral, suspension and cancellation of study see: www.aei.gov.au/regulatory-information Registration and Orientation Week Registration and Orientation at JCU Brisbane is compulsory for all newly enrolled students to attend. This week is spent ensuring that all students are correctly registered and enrolled in their program, receive their student cards and get their student logins, so they can start their chosen course and subjects on time. Registration and Orientation is also a campus-wide celebration for students commencing their studies at JCU Brisbane, it is an excellent opportunity to meet lecturing staff and make friends upon arriving into Brisbane. For most students, this week is usually the first taste of university life in a new country, and for this reason, Registration and Orientation at JCU Brisbane has been carefully planned to ensure students a smooth transition into Australian studies and campus life, enhancing the student experience. Registration and workshops are compulsory, therefore flights to Brisbane will need to be booked to include attendance to these events.
