VERNON HIGH SCHOOL LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS AMERICAN LEGION COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP Scholarship value will be computed annually based on the interest earned on the scholarship fund. Sponsored by the American Legion. Eligibility: 1) must be a Texas resident; 2) must be a child or grandchild of a Veteran of military active duty; 3) must indicate on application whether child or grandchild. ATPE DIANA DOWTY SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 sponsored by Association of Texas Professional Educators. At the close of each fiscal year Vernon ATPE will give a scholarship to a future teacher for use in college training toward that ambition. Eligibility: 1) senior who seriously intends to qualify as a professional teacher; 2) The executive board of Vernon ATPE shall approve the amount and source of the money and will select the recipient of the scholarship; 3) Each applicant must submit a folder containing a recent picture of himself/herself, a personal data sheet, an outline of high school, church, and community achievement, an essay on Why I want to become a teacher, a high school transcript, three letters of recommendation, and name and list the amount of any other scholarships received. CONTACT PERSON: ANGELA TURKETT, SHIVE 553-4309 DEADLINE: APRIL 4 TH BAND SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarship A : $500.00 for applicant who intends to pursue a degree in education with a major in instrumental music Scholarship B: $300.00 for applicant who intends to pursue a degree in education leading to a minor in instrumental music Scholarships C: $150.00 for applicants who intend to enroll at a college, technical, or vocational school. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: A AND B must have been a member of the Vernon High School Band for four years. A student who transfers to VISD and is in the Vernon Band at least the senior year will be eligible with documentation that the student was a member of band in their previous school for a total of four years. COACH LOUIS BOYNTON ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP Amount varies but at least $250.00 will go to a VHS male senior track letterman to be used at any college or university. If no track letterman applies, a football letterman will be chosen. See senior counselor for application. The recipient will be chosen by a committee made up of the Athletic Director, Boy s track coach, High School Principal, VHS faculty member, and the senior counselor. Committee members are required to read both the original document and the addendum concerning the Louis Boynton Athletic Scholarship before making their selection (senior counselor has the above mentioned documents). DEADLINE: MAY 1 ST THE COACH LOUIS BOYNTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Amount $150.00 will be awarded to a graduating senior who is the child or grandchild of a current or former VISD administrator, faculty member, or support personnel. The scholarship is based on participation; accomplishments will weigh in the candidates favor. Scholarship must be used for a summer, fall or spring semester at Vernon College. The recipient will be chosen by a committee made up of the Vernon High School principal, three faculty representatives (one from High School, McCord, and one from the other schools in alphabetical order) and the senior counselor. If the child of a committee member applies, an additional faculty member will be selected at random. APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Fill out the Vernon College Scholarship application and indicate that you are applying for the Louis Boynton Memorial Scholarship. You must also write a letter of request to accompany the application. The letter needs to include the following: 1) how you meet the eligibility criteria, 2) future plans and goals, 3) any additional information which you feel might help the committee make the decision, and 4) picture. DEADLINE: APRIL 1 ST JAY DON BELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 scholarship will be given by the friends and family of Jay Don Bell. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Be a scholar athlete. BUFFALO SOLDIERS SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 scholarship sponsored by the Buffalo Soldiers. One student will be chosen. A 500 word essay entitled Why I feel I should go to College along with a resume is to be turned in to the counselor. DEADLINE: MAY 15 TH CONTACT: Arthur Embers 553-1464 NORMA NOWLIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 scholarship sponsored by the Camp Fire USA. ELIGIBILITY: Senior camp fire member. May be used at any college or university. Must complete the application and write an essay (minimum 250 words) detailing the last years of involvement with Camp Fire; what Camp Fire meant to you; and why you think Camp Fire is important in our community. Return application, essay, school resume, and Camp Fire resume to the VHS counselor or Camp Fire USA Wilbarger County Council 2100 Yamparika Street Vernon, TX 76384. DEADLINE: APRIL 1 st HESTER T. CARDWELL NURSES EDUCATION TRUST $1000.00 scholarship to be dispersed from a trust fund for Hester T. Cardwell. ELIGIBILITY: 1) Vernon High School current year graduate pursuing a degree in nursing. Priority is given to students in the top 25% of the graduating class who are pursuing an RN degree, 2) if no one meets the priority qualifications, $500 may be awarded to a current year graduate pursuing a degree in nursing (LVN or RN), and 3) if no student qualified, a previous graduate who meets the criteria will be considered. See counselor for specifics. A formal application needs to be made to the counseling department. The committee who disperses the funds will be made up of the VHS counselors and one or more survivors of Hester T. Cardwell. CONTACT PERSON: TREY CARDWELL 552-0331. CENTRAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 for fall/spring semesters ($1000 total) sponsored by the Central Christian Church. ELIGIBILITY: 1) must apply to the C.C.C. Outreach Committee, Susie Byars, 2) hold a high school diploma or GED certificate, 3) be classified as needy, 4) be a resident of Wilbarger County, 5) have participated in extracurricular activity, such as sports, band, etc, and 6) must attend Vernon College. GUIDELINES: 1) grade point of 2.0 and under = loss of scholarship, 2) grade point of 2.1 2.5 = half of scholarship will be given, 3) grade point of 2.6 4.0 = all of scholarship will be given, 4) report to church office and chairman of outreach committee about grades every semester (submit grade sheet), and 5) the scholarship is awarded for two years provided the grade requirements are met and grade reports are submitted. COMET CLEANERS BAND SCHOLARSHIP $250.00 ELIGIBILITY: 1) be a senior band student, 2) verify admission to college, trade or technical school, 3) write a letter of request with brief resume with needs and goals stated for college and future, 4) financial need will be considered, and 5) be chosen by a committee made up of high school band director, senior counselor, and faculty members. CONTACT PERSON: SENIOR COUNSELOR. DEADLINE: MAY 1 ST S.C. DAVENPORT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Amount will vary depending on interest rates. Sponsored by the First United Methodist Church. ELIGIBILITY: 1) financial need, 2) member of the First United Methodist Church. CONTACT PERSON: CHURCH SECRETARY FOR APPLICATION DEADLINE: MID APRIL DELTA DELTA DELTA SCHOLARSHIP $200.00 per fall/spring semesters ($400.00 total) given by Vernon DDD Alumnae Chapter. ELIGIBILITY: 1) attend Vernon College, 2) deserving girl pursuing an Associates Degree, 3) completed form with transcript, 4) recommendation from a teacher, 5) be selected by Alumnae Chapter Committee, and 6) renewable at discretion of Chapter. D.O. AND ALMA FULTON SCHOLARSHIP FUND Amount varies depending on interest rates. ELIGIBILITY: The award will be given to a senior student in each of the four following categories: 1) football, 2) all sports other than football, 3) chorus, and 4) band. The awards committee shall consist of the following personnel at Vernon High School: Athletic director, Band director, Chorus Director, Principal, and President of Senior class. In no event shall a student receive a scholarship in more than one category from the D.O. and Alma Fulton scholarship fund. In no even shall the King scholarship recipients receive funds from the D. O. and Alma Fulton scholarship fund. DEADLINE: APRIL 1 ST Turn folder in to the senior counselor. Committee Procedures 1) The senior counselor will take minutes of the committee meeting, 2) each committee member will read applications independently and submit his/her choice for each category in writing. The person receiving the most votes in each category shall be the scholarship winners, 3) In the event that the senior class president or the relative of one of the committee members has applied for one of the scholarships, the superintendent will serve in his/her place. If two members have relatives who are applicants, the assistant superintendent will also serve. 4) In the event of a tie, the superintendent will vote. If he is a member of the committee, the assistant superintendent will vote to break the tie. SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA: 1) must have participated in a sport or in band or chorus during his/her senior year, 2) must have demonstrated leadership and achievement 3) must provide documentation of acceptance to a trade/technical school, college, or university. Funds will not be paid until enrollment is official. 4) must complete the application procedure as follows: APPLICATION PROCEDURE: The scholarship application will be a folder containing the following materials in order given. 1. Title page (Student name and category of scholarship being applied for) 2. Personal data sheet and recent picture 3. Official high school transcript with class rank and grade average 4. List by year of high school activities, honors, and offices 5. List by year of community activities, honors, and offices 6. Essay on educational and life goals (approximately 300-500 words) 7. At least three letters of recommendation none of which may be from the selection committee members or a relative 8. Other information which the applicant feels will help the committee make an informed decision. Note: Completed folder will be turned in to senior counselor. 5

FIRST AG CREDIT FARM CREDIT SERVICES SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 to a deserving high school senior. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: 1) a resident of Foard, Hardeman, or Wilbarger County, 2) currently have a B average, 3) will be a full-time student at a college or university in the fall of 2006, and 4) is declaring an Ag related major. Mail or deliver applications to First AG Credit office no later than April 15th. See counselor for application. FORT WORTH SCOTTISH RITE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP $1000.00 available to graduating seniors from all schools in the 35 counties of Texas which are part of the Fort Worth Scottish Rite membership area. Based on merit and student achievement. See counselor for details. DEADLINE: MARCH 15 TH JIM GREGORY AND EDNA SHOWERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Amount varies. ELIGIBILITY: 1) membership in the First United Methodist Church, 2) faith and character, 3) academic merit, and 4) committee discretion. CONTACT PERSON: CHURCH SECRETARY FOR APPLICATION DEADLINE: MID APRIL JUNIOR SERVICE LEAGUE OF VERNON SCHOLARSHIP $500.00 ($250 per fall/spring semester) ELIGIBILITY: 1) minimum GPA 2.75, 2) minimum SAT 900/ACT 23, 3) resident of Vernon, 4) completed application, 5) transcript, 6) 3 recommendations 1 must be from a teacher, 7) 10 hours service to community (must be documented), 8) essay on plans after college, 2 pages typed, and 9) interview. This scholarship will go to a Vernon resident who fulfills the eligibility requirements, exhibits a true desire to further his or her education, and expresses a genuine concern for community service. DEADLINE: APRIL 1 ST CONTACT PERSON: Rachel McWilliams KIWANIS SCHOLARSHIP Two $500.00 scholarships. Requirements: Any Vernon College campus. One scholarship is reserved for a student with a relative that is an active member of Kiwanis. One scholarship is available to any student who wishes to apply. ELIGIBILITY: 1) financial need, 2) passing grades, and 3) good work ethic. CONTACT PERSON: JOSE CARDENAS 886-2292 DEADLINE: APRIL 1 ST 6

MARY BELLE AND DEE MCSTAY SCHOLARSHIP The Mary Belle and Dee McStay Scholarship has been established in memory of Mary Belle and Dee McStay, lifetime residents of Vernon, Texas. Mary Belle taught school in Vernon for many years and both were committed to education and contribution to the community. The scholarship is given by their son John D. McStay, their grandson Judge McStay, and their families. This scholarship began in 1994 and is intended to assist wellrounded students who excel in academic endeavors, extra curricular activities, and community services. Through 2004, there have been thirteen recipients of this scholarship, which is in effect for each year of the student s college career, including through graduate studies. Mary Belle was born in Benjamin, Texas, and attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Dee was born in Munday, Texas, and attended Abilene Christian College. Both believed very strongly that continuing education, endurance and Christian faith are the prescription for a full and healthy life. Because of these individuals and their beliefs, these scholarships are awarded each year. The amount $2000 a year or $1000 per semester is awarded upon proof of registration, to the college or university of the recipient s choice. CRITERIA: Must be in the top quarter of the class and must apply by submitting a folder which includes the following: 1. Completion of the Mary Belle and Dee McStay application 2. Transcript 3. Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from an educator and one from a clergy 4. Completion of a detailed list of extracurricular activities, by semester 5. Completion of a detailed list and documentation of community service through church, school, and charitable organizations as well as documentation of individual employment activity 6. Completion of written answers to several selected questions in a supervised environment. This will take place after completion of the application. Application must be returned to your school counselor by the Friday following spring break. SELECTION COMMITTEE: The selection committee will be comprised of the high school principal, the senior counselor, chairman of the English, science, history and math departments and a McStay family representative. SELECTION PROCESS: Selection will primarily be based on academic performance, participation in extra curricular activities and participation in community service. APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY FOLLOWING SPRING BREAK AGREEMENT: Once the student is selected as a recipient, they must maintain a 3.0 GPA and carry a 15 hour course load per semester. The student must agree to keep the McStay family informed of home address and phone number and school address and phone number. In addition, a copy of the registration and transcript is necessary for funding each semester. This information should be provided to Judge, John or Ellen at 3628 Beverly Drive, Dallas, TX 75205. 7

MAURINE IGOU KEEFE HOME ECONOMICS AWARD Amount varies with interest rates. ELIGIBILITY: Two scholarships are available; one for a student who excels in clothing construction and a student who excels in food preparation skills. Students must have participated in a Home Economics class at VHS or in 4-H clothing construction and food preparation activities. The application is a folder containing the following: 1) documentation of Home Economics class or 4-H participation, 2) letter of recommendation from Home Economics teacher or 4-H leader, 3) resume, 4) high school transcript, and 5) future goals (essay). CONTACT PERSON: SENIOR COUNSELOR. DEADLINE: APRIL 1 TIM DOC MARSHALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP $500. ELIGIBILITY: 1) student who is interested in pursuing a career in athletic training or sports medicine, 2) any athlete that is in need of a scholarship, and 3) a student in need of a scholarship. CONTACT PERSON: RUBEN VARGAS MOZART CLUB SCHOLARSHIP Amount may vary. ELIGIBILITY: Senior who plans to major or minor in music. PROCEDURE: Students must turn in a folder containing the following items to the Senior counselor 1) letter of request, 2) list of activities and honors, and 3) letter of recommendation. ELIGIBILITY: 1) Must attend Vernon College, 2) complete Vernon College scholarship application, 3) write an essay stating accomplishments and future goals, 4) attach a picture, 5) send to Vernon College Office of Financial Aid, 6) students who have a connection with Oklaunion will be given priority, and 7) students who are Wilbarger County residents are given next priority. OSBORNE S SCHOLARSHIP Amount: tuition and fees for Vernon College. ELIGIBILITY: Open for Osborne s employees and dependents. Complete a Vernon College scholarship application and indicate that you are applying for the Osborne s Scholarship. DEADLINE: MARCH 1 ST OUTSTANDING STUDENT LIONS CLUB $750. ELIGIBILITY: 1) students ranking number 4 through 15 in the senior class may apply, 2) Lions Club Board of Directors will determine recipient, and 3) based on grades, student involvement and community service. VERNON COLLEGE FACULTY FORUM SCHOLARSHIP $400. ELIGIBILITY: Any student interested in Office Technology is eligible for $400 scholarship. Must be enrolled at Vernon College for a minimum of 12 hours. Incoming freshmen must carry a B average on high school work. This scholarship does not apply to summer semesters. See counselor for application. DEADLINE: APRIL 1 st RHODIA OUTSTANDING CHEMISTRY STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP $500. ELIGIBILITY: Students will be nominated by a committee made up of the principal Vernon High School, the chemistry teacher, the chairman of the science department, and the senior counselor. The student must have completed or currently be enrolled in an advanced honors science class. Final selection will be made by Rhodia. SHANOR FOUNDATION GRANT/LOAN Mrs. M. L. Shanor of Vernon, Texas, founded the Shanor Foundation in the mid 1960 s for the expressed purpose of assisting college bound students with their post high school education. This assistance is the form of both grant and loan to its recipients. It is intended for that student who has a sincere desire to complete his or her pos high school degree and/or course of study. Funds for both the fall and spring semesters will be in the form of a 50% grant and 50% loan. Recipients will be awarded the loan at zero percent interest. (See counselor s office for current amounts to be awarded). CRITERIA: 1) financial need will be considered, 2) must submit a folder including the following (a) completion of the Shanor Foundation Application. (Available from the VHS counselor s office), (b) transcript, (c) three (3) letters of recommendation; one of which must be from a current teacher, (d) completion of a list of high school activities, community service, and work experience, and 3) students will be asked to write an essay on a selected topic in a supervised environment. ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: TEXAS B-ON-TIME LOAN PROGRAM APPLY AT THE FINANCIAL AID OFFICE OF YOUR COLLEGE Funding level is not sufficient to provide a Texas-B-On-Time Loan to every student who meets the eligibility requirements. Priority will be given to students with the greatest financial need. ELIGIBILITY: 1) have graduated under the recommended/distinguished curriculum, 2) are Texas residents, 3) are enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree or certificate program at an eligible institution, 4) have completed a FAFSA, and have been certified by the designated school financial aid officer as eligible for a Texas B-on-Time Student Loan. The loan is available to assist students with educational costs for up to 150 semester credit hours. If you are an eligible student you will be notified by your institution and you must complete your portion of the application to receive this loan. CONTINUING ELIGIBILITY: Once a student has received a loan through this program, to maintain eligibility for future disbursements, the student must 1) First academic year make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree or certificate as determined by the institution at which the person is enrolled and 2) Second and Subsequent Academic years must complete at least 75% of the semester credit hour attempted in the most recent academic year and have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale on all coursework previously attempted at institutions of higher education. REPAYMENT/FORGIVENESS: If the student completes his or her degree on time and graduates with a B average, the student would not have to repay the loan. To graduate on time a student must 1) finish a four-year degree in four years, having taken no more than 6 semester credit hours beyond what is required for his or her major, or 2) finish a five year degree in five years, having taken no more than 6 semester credit hours beyond what is required for his or her major.
