We look forward to having you as a student at Wallace State. There are just a few steps that you need to complete in order to enroll in college level classes. This checklist will help to ensure your college experience begins as smoothly as possible. If you have any questions, please don t hesitate to ask. Help is just a phone call away. ADMISSIONS CHECKLIST: ADMISSIONS APPLICATION An admission application must be completed, signed and submitted to the Admissions Office. An application is included in this publication. Forms are also available in the Office of Admissions on the 1st floor of the James C. Bailey Commerce Center or may be completed online at our website: www.wallacestate.edu. For more information please call the Admissions Office at 256/352-8236 or the Recruiting Office located on the 11th floor of the James C. Bailey Commerce Center at 256/352-8031. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS Request a copy of your official transcripts from all high schools and colleges you have attended be sent to Wallace State Community College (WSCC) Admissions Office. If you have passed the GED examination, a copy of your certificate must be submitted to the Office of Admissions located on the 1st floor of the James C. Bailey Commerce Center. APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID The first step to apply for Financial Aid is to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a WSCC Scholarship Application. A scholarship application is included in this publication. FAFSA information is available online at www.wallacestate.edu. These forms are also available at local high schools and in the WSCC Office of Financial Aid located on the 1st floor of the James C. Bailey Commerce Center. You are encouraged to apply for Financial Aid by May 1 if you plan to attend WSCC in the Fall Semester or by September 1 if you plan to attend WSCC the following Spring Semester. The application deadline for WSCC scholarships is February 15 for fall term scholarships. For more information please call 256/352-8182 or 256/352-8137. ATTEND LIONS PRIDE Lions Pride Orientation sessions are conducted on the 1st floor of the James C. Bailey Commerce Center on specified dates prior to the start of the semester. At the conclusion of Lions Pride, you will be given the opportunity to meet with an advisor and discuss your educational plan. As part of this process, you will be authorized to register in the Office of Admissions or online. Contact the ACTION Center at 256/352-8040 for more information. TAKE THE COMPASS PLACEMENT TEST The purpose of COMPASS testing is to place you in the classes most appropriate to your academic ability. You will not be denied admission to WSCC based on your COMPASS scores; however, you may need to enroll in preparatory classes before taking other higher-level courses. If you received a 20 or higher ACT English score and/or a 20 or higher ACT Math score within the last two years, this test may not be necessary. Walkin test dates are conducted on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. For more information please contact 256/352-8040 or visit our ACTION Center located on the 8th floor of the James C. Bailey Commerce Center. ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT All students must complete the advisement process with their assigned academic advisor prior to registration for classes. NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION All entering freshmen are required to enroll in an orientation class designed to assist students in the transition to college (ORT101, ORT111, or ORT103). REGISTER FOR CLASSES After you have determined your class schedule with an advisor, you are ready to complete your registration. PURCHASE BOOKS About a month before classes begin, your textbooks will be available for purchase in the WSCC Bookstore. Cash, checks, VISA and MasterCard are accepted. WALLACE STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION Thank you for your interest in attending Wallace State Community College. To request information about programs of study or general information, contact the Office of Student Recruiting & Activities at 256/352-8031 or 1-866-350-WSCC. Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis. Carefully read the requirements for the scholarship for which you are applying. Only completed scholarship applications with the required attached information will be considered. A WSCC application for admission, official transcripts, and a scholarship application must be on file at the college before a scholarship can be awarded. Presidential Scholarships are available to students majoring in an academic field of study at WSCC. Presidential Scholarships are based on a combination of the ACT composite score, the cumulative grade point average, and an essay. ACT plus grade point average must equal 30 (e.g., ACT 27 + GPA 3.0 = 30). The essay should be no more than 500 words and should be based on why you feel you are deserving of a scholarship and what you hope to accomplish as a result of receiving this scholarship. Honors Scholarships are available to students who are seeking an intellectually challenging and creative college experience. Through prescribed activities, including educational experiences, service learning, interaction with faculty members, and attendance at culturally enriching events, students are allowed an opportunity for academic diversity. Academic Excellence Scholarships are available to students majoring in an academic field of study at WSCC. Academic Excellence Scholarships are based on the ACT composite score, cumulative grade point average, an essay, and two letters of recommendation. The essay should be no more than 500 words and should be based on why you feel you are deserving of a scholarship and what you hope to accomplish as a result of receiving this scholarship. Leadership Scholarships are available to students majoring in an academic field of study at WSCC. ACT score plus grade point average must equal 24 (e.g., ACT 21 + GPA 3.0 = 24). The essay should be no more than 500 words and should be based on why you feel you are deserving of a scholarship and what you hope to accomplish as a result of receiving this scholarship. Performing Arts Scholarships are awarded through the audition process. Auditions are held during the spring semester. Allied Health, Nursing, and Health Linkage Scholarships are available to students majoring in health care programs at WSCC. These scholarships are based on the ACT composite score, cumulative grade point average (3.0 or better), involvement in clubs and organizations, and/or volunteer experience in a health-care environment. If your chosen field requires a minimum ACT score, your ACT score must be equal to or exceed the required minimum score. Health Linkage Scholarships are designated for students who have begun their allied health care studies at one of the established linkage sites. All Allied Health, Nursing, and Linkage Scholarship recipients must meet all admissions criteria for the chosen field of study. Scholarships will be voided if the student is not formally accepted into the chosen field of study. Career/Technical Scholarships are available to students majoring in a technical field of study at WSCC. Career/technical scholarships are based on technical achievement. If awarded a scholarship, you must take 75% of your classes in your major field of study. Additional academic classes may be taken toward an A.A.S. degree in the technical field.
