7 CAREER FIELD AND JOB MARKET INFORMATION The expanding role of the legal assistant in the delivery of legal services has created increased opportunities for individuals with paralegal training. The private law firm continues to be the largest employer of legal assistants, but additional opportunities are available in other organizations and institutions, such as corporate legal departments, insurance companies, real estate and title firms, banks and government agencies. Persons interested in entering this career field should be aware that it is competitive. The number of jobs is steadily increasing; however, law firms and other employers are consistently becoming more demanding with regard to hiring criteria and are placing increasing emphasis on educational credentials. Some law firms require job applicants to possess a four-year degree in addition to the Paralegal Certificate. We recommend that all students entering the Paralegal Program make arrangements to complete a four-year degree following completion of the Paralegal Program curriculum if they have not already obtained a four-year degree. Applicants to the Paralegal Program should expect the paralegal curriculum to be challenging. The law is a complex subject, and comprehension of legal theories and concepts demands a high degree of analytical reasoning ability. The paralegal student must possess and be able to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, analytical ability and a high level of motivation. These skills and attributes are necessary not only to successfully complete the academic work required in this program, but also to enhance the student s opportunities for employment in the field. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL PARALEGALS / LEGAL ASSISTANTS MUST WORK UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A LICENSED ATTORNEY. 1

8 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM OPTIONS The JCCC Paralegal Program has been approved by the American Bar Association, which means that it meets that organization s standards regarding curriculum, instruction and program administration. JCCC offers two different programs depending on whether the applicant is seeking a paralegal certificate or degree. The selection of the appropriate program is determined solely by the applicant s educational background. I. PARALEGAL CERTIFICATE This program is limited to those persons who have already completed a two-year Associate of Arts degree or higher and have satisfied JCCC s and the American Bar Association s general education requirements prior to admission. Students will have fulfilled these general education requirements if they have 18 hours of general education credit from at least three of the following four disciplines: humanities, social science, natural science, or mathematics. This program requires the student to complete a total of 33 credit hours. A complete description of the Certificate program s requirements may be found on page 3 of this packet. II. ASSOCIATE OF ARTS DEGREE This program must be completed by any student who has not completed a two-year Associate of Arts degree or higher. This program requires the student to complete a total of 64 credit hours, which includes 33 credit hours of paralegal courses and 31 credit hours of courses in the general education area. A complete description of the Associate of Arts Degree program s requirements may be found on page 4 of this packet. Note: Students graduating with an Associate of Arts degree must complete an approved cultural diversity course. Some of these courses are able to meet both a diversity requirement and a general education requirement. Please contact a JCCC counselor for specific information and program of study. Those selecting this option are encouraged to make arrangements to transfer to a fouryear institution following completion of this program. Failure to complete a four-year degree may limit the individual s opportunities for employment and career advancement. 2

The test is administered by the JCCC Testing/Assessment Center, SC 334, third floor of the Student Center. It is not necessary to schedule an appointment. You may take the test on a walk-in basis during the Testing Center s normal hours of operation Tuesday through Friday. There is no charge. 15 PROMOTION AND GRADUATION POLICIES In order to progress from one semester to the next in the Paralegal Program, the following policies will be followed: 1. Each student must satisfactorily complete the appropriate sequence of courses as defined by the paralegal curriculum. Satisfactory completion of courses is defined as: A. A minimum grade of C (2.0) in each of the following courses (which are prerequisites for admission): ENGL 121 LAW 121 LAW 123 Composition I (if in the Associate of Arts degree program) Introduction to Law Paralegal Professional Studies B. A minimum grade of C (2.0) must be achieved in each paralegal course. Failure to achieve at least a C (2.0) will cause the student to be placed on academic probation. C. An overall GPA of no less than 2.0 on a 4.0 scale ( C ) in all other general education courses. 2. If a student receives a grade lower than a C in any of his or her legal studies courses, the student is placed on probation for the next fall or spring semester. If the student earns another grade lower than a C, the student is ineligible to continue in the program. Should this occur, a student may apply for readmission and must follow the standard application procedure. 3. Illness or other extenuating circumstances may result in the receipt of an incomplete grade. A grade of incomplete will indicate that the course objectives and requirements have not been met. All incompletes must be contracted between the student and the course instructor, with the approval of the division director. Specific deadlines for completion of the required assignments will be established. The incomplete must be completed in accordance with JCCC requirements and deadlines. 4. The Paralegal Program does not accept Pass/Fail grades for any law courses. 5. A paralegal student is responsible for monitoring his or her own academic progress and for seeking assistance from the course instructor when necessary. 9

16 6. The paralegal curriculum may be subject to changes which would result in a modification of program requirements. Students who stay continuously enrolled in courses approved by the program will not be affected by such changes and will be required to meet only the program requirements in effect during the semester in which they initially enrolled in the Paralegal Program. Any student who does not re-enroll in program courses at JCCC for a semester or longer will be subject, upon re-enrollment, to any curriculum or program requirement changes which may have gone into effect during the interim. Any student who is not enrolled at JCCC for a semester or longer will be automatically dropped from the Paralegal Program. Such a student may apply for readmission following the standard application procedure. 7. Successful completion of the program will entitle students to the Associate of Arts Degree or the Paralegal Certificate. 10
