I. Bio Se_Ren_Dip Trio Se_Ren_Dip Trio is a Belgian contemporary music ensemble with a focus on transmedia, combining sound with image and art with science. The media thus produced engage in constantly renewed relations with each other: sometimes they are complementary, at other moments they clash Se_Ren_Dip Trio is in the first place a collaboration of three people. Each of them carries his past, education and experience with him: Baritone saxophone player Dries is a KULeuven doctorandus in bio engineering, fascinated with all the rich tones a bariton sax can produce and with on the edge technology and programming. Now he is working as a watermodeller at Hydroscan. Guitarist (Bouzoukist, ) Thomas is an architect (Ghent, LUCA School of Arts), devoting his time to music, photography, literature and the like. Cellist Toon has two degrees: engineering in electronics (NaRaFi, Brussel) and social engineering (Ecole Ouvrière Supérieure, Bruxelles) and is passionated by music of course, and by drawing, interactive media and the emerging new paradigmas around P2P, the Commons etc. Thus, Se_Ren_Dip Trio is making, from the very start and linked to the character(istic)s of its components, a bridge between a panoply of technologies and sciences on the one hand and transmedial arts on the other. The trio was indeed named after Serendipity or finding what you don t search for. In serendipity itself, one can see bridges between arts and science The trio combines its music and soundscapes with images, texts, words and visuals which are projected during the live performances. The instruments of the musicians (baritone sax, guitars, cello) are extended with soft and hardware, drawings, video work and other images. Another specific character of the performances is the interactivity between sound and image and sometimes with the audience (especially in installations). The performances and installations of the SRD Trio always strive to give central attention to the intrinsic acoustic characters of the three instruments; electronics and other technologies must never replace or overrule the poetical and musical content of both sound and images. Since 2014 the trio is Ensemble in Residence at MATRIX [New Music Centre], Leuven.
II. Work of Se_Ren_Dip Trio II. I Concepts As Se_Ren_Dip Trio we will develop our performances based on these key concepts: A. Music a. our acoustic instruments (baritonsax, cello, guitar) are the acoustical starting point b. our acoustic sound can be extended with sampling and live effects c. we will always try to broaden and develop new acoustic sounds on our instruments B. Visuals a. visuals should always be in relation with the sounds we produce b. live drawing can generate music, sound effects and visuals c. live music influences live visuals C. Interactivity a. measurements of any kind (camera, sensors, internet,...) can interact with our performance b. installations can be used as sound and visual input e.g. the installation becomes a 4th member of the trio c. what happens on stage is translated and transformed in visuals that level up the audience experience d. reactions of the audience can also influence the sound and the visuals
