ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE In this note, you will learn the basic applications of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise (hereafter McAfee ). Six topics will be covered as below: 1. Start McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 2. Change Scan Location 3. Set up On-Delivery Email Scanner 4. Set up On-Access Scanner 5. Set up AutoUpdate 6. Set the maximum log file size 1. Start McAfee VirusScan Enterprise McAfee VirusScan Enterprise is an antivirus software application. It will run automatically in the background when your computer starts up. You can manually customise activities such as manually checking for updates, setting automatic update options, or running a scan from the McAfee VirusScan Console. OR 1. 2. Change Scan Location The scan feature enables the user to scan any files in a specific location on his/her computer. 2. Right-click Full Scan (in the Task column) to select Properties By default, you will see All local drives (in the item name column). In our example, we would specify and scan all removable drives such as external hard drive(s) or USB thumb drive(s) instead of local drives (e.g. C: or D: drive). 1. Select All local drives 2. Click on Edit button 3. Choose All removable drives under Item to scan 4. Click on OK button 5. Click on OK button again Make sure that Include Subfolders and Scan Boot Sections are checked. Progress window will popup to show progress of virus scanning. Follow the prompts whenever a virus is found. Student Information Technology Competency (ITC) Test Page 2 of 6
3. Set up On-Delivery Email Scanner This option enables the real time virus scanning when the users sending out or receiving e-mail messages by MS Outlook. 2. Right-click On-Delivery Email Scanner (in the Task column) to select Properties 3. Select Actions tab When a virus is found, the default action will be performed is Clean attachments If the leaning of the virus is unsuccessful, the setting is set to moving the file to the directory that is specified as quarantine directory. Now you may select another action from the Perform this action first pull-down menu to change the settings. For example, move attachments to a folder when a virus threat is found. 4. Set up On-Access Scanner This task enables virus scanning of any file that is accessed. All the programs that the user tries to access are initially scanned with the aid of this task. In other words, files will be scanned before they are accessed so virus threat will be detected beforehand. 2. Right-click On-Access Scanner (in the Task column) to select Properties The General tab is a panel containing all virus scan settings and specific tasks to be performed. To customise the sensitivity of detection to the suspicious files, select the item from the pull-down menu regarding the Sensitivity level at the bottom. By default, the value is Low. 5. Set up AutoUpdate The frequency of virus definition updating will be performed automatically in McAfee. Generally, it is sufficient to update the software application and virus definition about once in a week. However, when there are risks of new viruses spreading, the time interval for virus definition update should be shortened. 1. LaunchVirusScan Console 2. Right-click AutoUpdate (in the Task column) to select Properties 3. Click on Schedule button 4. Select Schedule tab The default schedule for updating at the Institute will be 1:00p.m. in a daily basis. In our example, you may change the update task every Tuesday starting at 9:00am. 1. Choose Weekly under Run task menu 2. Set time to 09:00 under Start Time menu 3. Check Tuesday under Schedule Task Weekly menu 4. 6. Set the maximum log file size Log file keeps the records of update processes. If the updating process fails, examining the log reports may help the user to understand and fix the problem. Generally allocating larger log file size will enable user to review more information. 2. Right-click Buffer Overflow Protection (in the Task column) to select Properties 3. Select Reports tab 4.
