96 Format Sample Storage Tubes Introduction FluidX Sample Storage Tubes in 96 Format FluidX offer a complete and unique range of sample storage tubes in 96 format that include space-saving external thread designs, and our very own tri-labelled Jacket Tubes - all ideal for cryogenic storage. External Thread Cryo Tubes Save Space and Reduce Cost. Thread is on the outside of the tube so there is no loss in working volume when a cap is added. e.g. 0.3ml external thread tubes require a third less freezer storage space than standard 0.5ml tubes and are contained within a low profile 96 format rack with a heightof just 22mm. Excellent Seal Performance No silicone seal is used, the cap cannot be overtightened. External thread screw cap tubes use a deforming compression seal and provide a more effective seal than silicone alternative. Cap and tube are manufactured from the same polypropylene homopolymer (resin) to prevent differential expansion during freeze-thaw cycles. Note: Homopolymer provides a lower binding and wider temperature tolerance than standard polypropylene. FluidX external thread caps feature a double start thread. The thread is fully engaged after a maximum rotation of 180 (rather than 360 for internal thread) making the cap easier to use especially in automated environments. Using a compression seal, rather than an O ring, results in a tighter seal with a more consistent torque. Ideal for ultra-cold storing of DNA and RNA samples (-196 C). Choice of coding option. TwistLock is provided as standard, however some racks are available without TwistLock for use on specific automated systems. LidLock Racks fitted with our LidLock latch are designed to withstand drop test for added sample security. TubeLock offers dual-function capability. Racks with the TubeLock feature offer two stable tube positions, either locked or non-locked. TubeLock is activated by applying pressure to tube top, clicks the tube into place. Racked tubes can be ordered either pre-locked or non-locked. Ideal for Cold Storage Temperature range -196 C (with screw cap) to 110 C. Suitable for cryogenic storage, but not for submersion in liquid phase Nitrogen. Can be autoclaved. Sterilisation Services At FluidX we understand how important it is to provide labware in a perfect condition and ideally suited for your research. That s why we offer three alternative methods of providing contamination free products. Production Sterile Prevention is better than cure. That s why we manufacture all of our storage products in a class 100,000 clean room environment. To gain access to this area everyone must wear a gown, gloves, face-mask, hair-net and over-shoes. In addition they must pass through a double door with an airshower designed to remove any particles. No material that could cause contamination is allowed in the clean room. From the injection moulding machine our consumables are processed and bagged in the clean room. Only once they have left the clean room are they are placed in the transport box ready for shipment. The efficacy of this process is tested periodically so we can be sure that FluidX consumables are production sterile and meet the standards outlined in the table below: Gamma Irradiation Sterilisation Typically laboratory consumables requiring sterilisation are treated to ensure a Sterility Assurance Level, or SAL, of 10-6. Irradiation itself cannot guarantee that the product is free from other ontaminants such as those listed in the previous table, only that there are no viable micro- organisms. To ensure no further contaminants are present production sterility is still an essential requirement. However is not possible to guarantee that gamma irradiation will destroy any DNA contamination to a point where it cannot be amplified and interfere with subsequent analysis. Gamma irradiation affects polypropylene so that it becomes more brittle over time and increases the binding characteristics of the plastic (for more information see the FluidX application note Choice of Polypropylene Polymer and Production Sterile versus Gamma Irradiation ). For this reason FluidX recommends that, wherever possible, production sterility is relied on to deliver the contamination free product required for research and long term storage. Recommended Temperature Range for FluidX Sample Storage Tubes Cryogenic storage at very cold temperatures is designed to provide an indefinite, if not nearly infinite, longevity to biological materials. By reducing sample temperatures to below the glass transition phase of water (-132 C), all metabolic activity comes to a halt. Storage below this temperature therefore offers the most secure form of long term cryo- preservation. Storage in gas phase liquid Nitrogen provides a convenient way of storing samples at temperatures below this transition temperature. FluidX screw cap storage tubes are designed for long term sample storage at cryogenic temperatures, including storage in the gas phase of liquid Nitrogen. Gas phase liquid Nitrogen temperatures have been typically quoted as between -150 C and -178 C, depending on the location and the distance away from the liquid nitrogen reservoir surface. However, the latest generation of cryogenic storage systems are powered by liquid nitrogen in such a way to ensure a consistent temperature within the storage chamber, and can be as low as -195 C. All FluidX screw cap storage tubes are fully compatible with this storage temperature and can be safely used for long term storage in this environment. If a tube cap is not completely and correctly tightened nitrogen may seep inside the tube. When the tube is then removed from storage this liquid nitrogen will instantly boil, expanding to over 700 times its liquid volume. This creates a significant risk of explosion and/or biohazard risk from aerosols. 2. Many researchers have noted that immersion in liquid nitrogen carries with it a significant risk of cross contamination from bacteria, viruses and DNA that can be present within the liquid Nitrogen.
