District 203 K-4 Elementary Summer School 2015 The following Elementary Summer School courses will be conducted from Monday, June 8, 2014, through Friday, June 26, 2015. THE SAME COURSES WILL BE OFFERED AT TWO LOCATIONS: NORTH LOCATION: Mill Street Elementary School 1300 North Mill Street Naperville, IL 60563 SOUTH LOCATION: Meadow Glens Elementary School 1150 Muirhead Ave. Naperville, IL 60565 Any questions regarding course selection, please contact us at: 630-637-7346 All calls will be returned after 3:30 p.m. daily. Please note: If you register your child for two sessions, there will be supervision provided between sessions. All courses held at Mill Street Elementary and Meadow Glens Elementary will meet 1.5 hours each day. a.m. Session 2: 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Tuition: Course NCUSD 203 (In-District) Out-of-District Elementary Course $160 $240 Elementary Course Descriptions Kinder-Booster: LITERACY Students who have completed kindergarten. Students who received the following symbols on the Kindergarten Supplement: Students who performed at or below grade level expectations throughout the year in the area of Literacy. Students who are not yet reading conventionally. This course is designed to boost specific skills and strategies for our young literacy learners in the following academic areas: reading, writing, and language. If you found while working as a team with your child s classroom teacher, that your son/daughter needed continued literacy support in order to meet kindergarten academic expectations, this would be an appropriate course for your child.

Kinder-Booster: LITERACY is offered: Kinder-Booster: MATH Students who have completed kindergarten. Students who received the following symbols on the Kindergarten Supplement: continued academic support in the area of Math. Students who performed at or below grade level expectations throughout the year in the area of Math. This course is designed to boost specific skills and strategies for our young mathematicians in the following academic areas: Counting and Cardinality, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, as well as Geometry. If you found while working as a team with your child s classroom teacher, that your son/daughter needed continued math support in order to meet kindergarten academic expectations, this would be an appropriate course for your child. Students who have completed fourth grade. This course is designed to build and extend student learning through the research-based combination of academic opportunities and physical activity. The academic focus of this course is literacy based. The students will be working in collaborative literature circle groups discussing the literary elements of the text that they are reading. During peer dialogue, they will be working on their skills and strategies of making meaning of the text. This will be successfully accomplished through the merging of their thinking with the support of text evidence. The students will also have the enriching opportunity to practice and perform a content rich non-fiction play. The plays that have been chosen for the students build fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. A fitness component has been incorporated into this course to help fire-up the synapses readying the brain for new learning! Read, Write, and Run is offered: WRITING COURSES Young Authors: First and Second Grade Writers Students who have completed first grade. Students who have completed second grade. This workshop is designed to develop and expand individual writing skills. Beloved literature will be read daily to provide ample opportunities for students to hear what good writing sounds like. The Six Traits of Writing will be woven into every mini lesson helping students to understand the basic underpinnings of what makes writing work. Different writing genres will be modeled throughout the course. Young Authors: First and Second Grade Writers is offered: Inspired Authors: Third and Fourth Grade Writers Students who have completed third grade. Students who have completed fourth grade. This workshop is designed to develop and expand individual writing skills. Daily mini lessons will provide the foundation needed for our young writers to gain the necessary confidence to realize their voice. Focusing on specific skills and strategies that embrace the

Six Traits of Writing will propel the students to become more accomplished writers through daily authentic practice. Writing genre focus: Narrative Informative/Explanatory Opinion Piece Inspired Authors: Third and Fourth Grade Writers is offered: Reading Courses READING: BUILDING SKILLS AND STRATEGIES Students who performed at or below grade level expectations in READING. The following courses have been designed for those students who would benefit from continued academic support and exposure to the skills and strategies that promote academic success in the area of reading. Students will have multiple learning opportunities to improve their comprehension skills and strategies when reading. Both informational text and fictional literature will be used to bolster reading strategies which will ultimately support independent meaning making of text. First Grade Reading: Building Skills and Strategies Students who have completed first grade. They will experience a balanced exposure to literary and informational text. The curriculum has been designed to help students successfully navigate a text selection by reading closely and focusing on developing the skills and strategies needed to answer text-dependent questions. Academic vocabulary will be brought to the attention of students while reading various texts as well. Having an awareness and understanding of the vocabulary in a text will support students meaning making journey when they encounter these words in other complex texts. Students will have multiple learning opportunities to develop problem solving thinking skills and strategies involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Educators will also focus on helping students to improve their mental math skills. First Grade Math: Building Skills and Strategies Students who have completed first grade. Math: Moving Forward students will have multiple opportunities to strengthen and expand their knowledge base in regards to the skills and strategies that are necessary when working mathematical problems they may encounter in real-world situations. After whole group instruction, the educator will release responsibility to the students to begin thoughtfully using the intelligent thinking of the Habits of Mind during authentic practice. Our young mathematicians will work in small collaborative groups sharing their mathematical thinking with peers along their problem solving journey. As students selfmonitor, they will be encouraged to use their critical thinking skills and evaluate if the strategy they have chosen is moving them along the right path to accurately answer the question, or will they need to reevaluate and consider changing course. After attaining the answer, they will be taught how to try a different method or representation to see if they are able to attain the same answer.
