In the Rankings UCLA moved up one spot to No. 4 in the nation rankings with a season average of 196.758. The Bruins remain ranked No. 1 on floor (49.4) and are fifth on beam (49.208), 10th on bars (49.092) and 12th on vault (49.058). Individually, Danusia Francis continues to lead the nation on beam with a 9.917 average. Sadiqua Bynum leads three Bruins in the Top 10 on floor, ranking sixth (9.925 average), while Hallie Mossett is seventh (9.912) and Angi Cipra is 10th (9.908). Napualani Hall makes her debut in the national rankings, checking in at 21st on vault (9.858). UCLA vs. California - The Matchup UCLA leads the all-time regular season series with Cal, 65-2. The two teams faced each other twice last season, with UCLA winning the dual in Pauley Pavilion, 196.800-195.425, and the Bruins placing second to the Bears sixth at the Pac-12 Championships. The Golden Bears are coming off a season-best performance in a tri-meet at Stanford, where they finished second with a score of 195.650. Toni-Ann Williams, last year s Pac-12 of the Year, won floor exercise with a score of 9.925 and now ranks 22nd in the nation on the event with an average of 9.883. As a team, California ranks ninth on floor (49.1), 14th on vault (48.967), 24th on beam (48.650). Berkeley Homecoming for Bynum UCLA fifth-year senior Sadiqua Bynum will be competing for the last time in her hometown on Monday. Bynum, who came to UCLA from Berkeley High School as a walk-on, has developed into a tremendous leader for the Bruins, anchoring the team on floor the last two seasons, earning All-America honors and currently ranking sixth in the nation with an average score of 9.925. She has been one of the Bruins most consistent competitors over the years, hitting every routine both this season and last season and 36 straight going back to 2014. Bruins Battle Through Adversity at Arizona UCLA battled through illness and adversity to post a 196.800-196.475 victory at Arizona on Jan. 23. With several team members sick or resting, the Bruins nevertheless put up its second-highest score of the season. Katelyn Ohashi was the epitome of Bruin Strong, coming back from a hard fall on her beam dismount that was caused by an equipment malfunction. After being evaluated by medical and athletic training staff, Ohashi was cleared to repeat her routine, and she hit the same routine, including the double pike dismount, for a career-high 9.825. Ohashi won the allaround (39.375) and uneven bars (9.925). Napualani Hall won vault (9.9), and Sadiqua Bynum won floor (9.925). It was UCLA s vault performance that proved to be the difference, as the Bruins outscored the Wildcats on that event, 49.150-48.800. Ohashi Again Named Pac-12 of Week Katelyn Ohashi was named the Pac-12 /Newcomer of the Week for the second consecutive week. Ohashi set or tied career-highs on all four events and won the all-around with a career-best 39.375 in UCLA s 196.800-196.475 win at Arizona. The freshman from Plano, Texas started the meet with a career-high 9.925 on bars that gave her the event victory, the first of her career. She then set a new career-best on vault with a 9.775 and tied her career-best on floor with a 9.85. On beam, she was well on her way to a big score when the cap of the beam came off while she was dismounting, causing her to fall on her neck. After being evaluated by medical and athletic training staff, she was cleared to repeat her routine and finished with a career-high score of 9.825. High Marks After three meets, UCLA has posted five 9.95 scores this season - Danusia Francis twice on beam, Christine Peng- Peng Lee once on beam and Hallie Mossett and Sadiqua Bynum once on floor. Mossett s 9.95 was the first 9.95+ score of her career, and Bynum s was her second. Lee now has eight (3 on bars, 5 on beam), and Francis has 11 (10 on beam, 1 on floor). The Bruins have also tallied 15 scores of 9.9 or higher this year. Bruin Debuts Some new faces made their season debuts at Arizona. Stella Savvidou, who joined the Bruins in late December, performed an exhibition routine on bars, scoring 9.75. Nicki Shapiro also made her Bruin debut with an exhibition beam performance that scored 9.725. Sonya Meraz and Madison Preston had strong showings on floor, competing for the first time this season and scoring 9.8 and 9.875, respectively. Bluetooth Waning For the first two weeks of the season, Christine Peng- Peng Lee has been performing a hands-free beam routine due to thumb surgery in November for a torn ligament. On Saturday at Arizona, she brought back her Homma Flairs mount, marking the first step in her return to full usage of her hands. Lee kept her tumbling hands-free still, performing an aerial/back layout combo and an aerial/layout full dismount. She scored 9.825 on the routine and has a high of 9.95 in the season opener. Vault Changes With the Yurchenko layout full and Yurchenko layout half vaults being devalued to 9.95 start values, several Bruins 2016 SCHEDULE/RESULTS Overall: 2-1 / Pac-12: 1-0 National Ranking: 4th JANUARY 10 #3 ALABAMA (TV: PAC12) W 196.55-196.3 15 at #3 Florida L 196.925-197.675 23 at Arizona (TV: PAC12) W 196.800-196.475 FEBRUARY 1 at #21 California (TV: PAC12) 7 pm 6 UTAH (TV: PAC12) 1 pm 13 OREGON STATE (TV: PAC12) 8 pm 21 at Washington (TV: PAC12) 1 pm 27 ARIZONA STATE (TV: PAC12) 1 pm MARCH 6 GEORGIA/STANFORD (TV: PAC12) 12 pm 13 OKLAHOMA (TV: PAC12) 2 pm 19 at Pac-12s (TV: PAC12) TBD APRIL 2 at NCAA Regionals TBD 15 at NCAA Semifi nals (TV: ESPNU) TBD 16 at NCAA Finals (TV: ESPNU) 7 pm CT All home meets are BOLD and held at Pauley Pavilion. Francis Hosts Bruin Banter Senior Danusia Francis has taken over hosting duties from Samantha Peszek in the weekly gymnastics web series Bruin Banter, which can be viewed every Thursday on uclabruins.com. This week s guest will be freshman Katelyn Ohashi. International Competitors UCLA was well-represented at the 2015 World Championships in Glasgow, as senior Danusia Francis competed for Jamaica and freshman Stella Savvidou competed for Cyprus. Bruin signee Madison Kocian, who will defer enrollment until the 2017 season, won a pair of gold medals for the uneven bars and team competition. The Bruins have two other former World Championship competitors in Christine Peng-Peng Lee and Mikaela Gerber, who were on Canada s 2011 Worlds team, and an American Cup (2013) and Pacific Rim Championship (2012) all-around champ in Katelyn Ohashi. About the Bruins UCLA returns four All-Americans from last year s squad - Sadiqua Bynum (floor), Sophina DeJesus (bars), Danusia Francis (beam) and Christine Peng-Peng Lee (bars and beam). Newcomers to the squad this year include 2013 America Cup winner Katelyn Ohashi, 2014 Level 10 national vault champion Madison Preston, eight-time Region 1 champion Nicki Shapiro and 2015 World Championships competitor Stella Savvidou. Additionally, 2013 Level 10 national bars champion Melissa Metcalf is back after missing the 2015 season with a knee injury. Macy Toronjo, who won the 2015 Level 10 national all-around and floor titles, is out for the year after undergoing rotator cuff surgery. The Bruins lost seven gymnasts from a year ago, most notably All-Americans Samantha Peszek and Jordan Williams. Peszek won the NCAA all-around and beam titles last season and finished her career as a 17-time All-American and a 2015 Academic All-American. Coming Back UCLA returns 10 athletes who saw competition time a year ago and 17 of 24 routines (71%) competed at the 2015 NCAA Championships, including five each on bars and beam. The Bruins will need to replace 9.9+ scores from Samantha Peszek (all-around) and Jordan Williams (vault). Six Bruin returners scored at least one 9.9 last season - Sonya Meraz (1), Sophina DeJesus (2), Angi Cipra (3), Sadiqua Bynum (8), Danusia Francis (15), and Christine Peng-Peng Lee (15). Additionally, Lee pulled in seven scores of 9.95 or better, including one 9.975 on beam; Francis had five 9.95s, and Bynum had one, a 9.975 on floor. The Bruins won their first NCAA championship in 1997 under Kondos Field and won again in back-to-back seasons in both 2000-2001 and 2003-2004. In 2010, UCLA won its sixth NCAA title with a 24-for-24 performance in the Super Six. UCLA has remained the Leader of the Pac under Kondos Field s tenure, winning 12 conference titles, including the inaugural Pac-12 title in 2012, to go along with 17 NCAA Regional titles. In 2015, UCLA won the NCAA Regional title, and senior Samantha Peszek won the NCAA all-around and beam titles. Kondos Field has been selected by her peers as the NACGC/W National Coach of the Year four times (1996, 1997, 2000 and 2001) and was also named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year in 1995, 2000, 2003 and 2012. Kondos Field, who is now in her 26th year as head coach of the Bruins, emphasizes a team concept, but her student-athletes have also found individual success, winning 27 NCAA individual titles during her years as head coach. Her professional journey has been a unique one. A former professional ballet dancer with the Sacramento Ballet, Capital City Ballet and Washington, D.C. Ballet, she initially got her start in gymnastics at Agilites in Carmichael, Calif. by playing the piano for floor exercise music. From there, she became a dance coach, and under the guidance of former University of Minnesota co-head coach Jim Stephenson, learned the fundamentals of the sport. In 1983, she was hired to be UCLA s assistant coach and choreographer. While working under head coach Jerry Tomlinson, Kondos Field helped put UCLA Gymnastics on the map with their distinctive choreography and flair. and Regional Championships. Just one year later, she led the Bruins to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships, and in 1997 she became just the fourth coach in NCAA history to win a national title. In 26 years as Bruin head coach, Kondos Field holds a career record of 470-110-2 (.809 winning percentage). Associate Head Coach Chris Waller Former UCLA All-American, NCAA Champion and U.S. Olympian Chris Waller is in his 14th season as an assistant coach for the UCLA women s gymnastics team and fourth as associate head coach. Waller has brought nothing but success since returning to UCLA in 2003, helping guide the Bruins to three NCAA team titles. In his first season on the Bruin staff, he helped guide the Bruins to the 2003 NCAA, Regional and Pac-10 Championships. He was also the acting head coach when UCLA snapped the longest home court winning streak in NCAA history for any sport, handing Utah its first home loss in 23 years. In 2004, he helped coach the Bruins to a repeat championship, won in record-setting fashion. He was also selected by his peers as the 2004 NACGC National Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2010, he was voted the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2004, Waller coached former Bruin great Mohini Bhardwaj as she earned not only a spot on the U.S. Olympic team but the honor of team captain as well. Bhardwaj led the U.S. to a silver medal and placed sixth in the floor exercise finals. Waller coached another Bruin to elite success in 2010, helping guide Vanessa Zamarripa to the U.S. National Team after an eighth-place all-around finish at the Visa Championships. One of the United States all-time gymnastics greats, Waller was a member of the National Team from 1989-97 and captured the U.S. all-around crown in 1991 and pommel horse titles from 1991-93. He was an all-around finalist at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and took fifth on the pommel horse, just one-tenth of a point away from the gold medal. In addition, Waller placed in the Top 6 on the pommel horse at the 1993 World Championships and won three medals at the 1990 Goodwill Games and a team gold at the 1995 Pan American Games. He was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 2003. At UCLA, Waller earned four All-America honors and helped the Bruins capture the NCAA title in 1987. He also won individual titles on the pommel horse in 1989 and the high bar in 1990. Every year from 1989-1993, Waller won either a U.S. or NCAA national title. Assistant Coach Randy Lane Randy Lane is in the fifth year of his third stint as a Bruin assistant coach and his 12th year overall with the program. In 2012, he was selected the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year and helped lead UCLA to the first-ever Pac-12 Championship, as well as a NCAA Regional championship and a third-place NCAA finish. Lane previously coached at UCLA from 1992-94 and 1998-2001. He left coaching for a private business but returned to the sport as an assistant coach at Florida from 2002-06. He was an associate head coach at Michigan State from 2007-11 and had previously served as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara from 1995-97. During Lane s second stint at UCLA, he helped guide the Bruins to NCAA titles in 2000 and 2001. UCLA gymnasts won eight NCAA individual titles from 1998-2001, including three on the event on which he was the lead coach, uneven bars. Kondos Field was appointed head coach of the Bruins in 1991 and brought in Scott Bull as her co-head coach.
