MARQUETTE DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN SUMMER-FALL 2015 PRESIDENT S POST: Bobbi Clift I hope all of you are having a wonderful summer. I ve recovered nicely from my fall and broken femur. I think you are aware that Kathy Mallory graciously agreed to accept the office of Vice President. However, she does not want to move into the president s role. My plan is to continue through 2016 to help facilitate the District Annual Celebration that will be held in Marquette in October of that year. After that, a new president will be needed. We are fortunate to have a treasurer, Barb Akins. Unit treasurers please resume forwarding money to her. Our District Annual Celebration will be Oct 6th, 9:00-2:00 in St. Ignace. Officers will meet on Oct. 5 th at 2:00 pm. Remember that St. Ignace is on Eastern Standard Time. Mission U of the North will be Oct 19-20 th, in Gaylord. Many thanks of all of you for the wonderful mission work you continually do!. District Officer s will meet Oct. 5, 2:00pm (EST) at the St. Ignace United Methodist Church. SPIRITUAL GROWTH: Jane Yaeger We had a wonderful Spiritual Growth Retreat this May as we learned about the other 12 disciples. Thanks to Janet Helmbold, Darlene Pruess and the ladies who participated in the program, and of course, all who attended. Some comments from the evaluation form: learned a lot, good fellowship, enjoyed discussion, and learning about women of the Bible, always interesting and learned a lot, it was heartwarming, subject of other women well developed, love that we got to share ways God shows us signs that He is near. I am happy to say all comments were favorable. Please set aside April 29-30 th for the next retreat. More information and registration form will be in the next newsletter. Truly God s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light for our path. Holy Scripture allows us to see the footsteps of Jesus. When we follow His footprints, some wonderful things happen. We begin to hear His voice more clearly, This is an amazing promise in scripture,; as we draw near to God, ;He draws nearer to us. Along with this closeness with God also comes a closer walk with one another. The more we love God, the more we love one another. The more grace we receive from God, the more we are compelled to extend grace to one another. What a beautiful thing! The Lord has left us fresh footprints to follow. I pray that as we walk the path together, we will experience the love of being the family of God. Keep looking to the One True Light for growth.
SECRETARY; Patti Steinberg I enjoyed meeting many of you at my FIRST Spiritual Growth Retreat in Manistique. It was SO moving. I encourage all of you to make it next year it was so uplifting and the Spirit of God filled the hearts of His faithful! Your Leadership Team will be meeting on August 19 to prepare for the October Annual Celebration. We will have fun and accomplish a lot in the name of Jesus! In this edition of the newsletter you will find the form for the Local Unit Officers. You will notice that this form is a combination of Officer Information and. Membership. (Membership Due Sept 15) Please email or send your information to me by October 31 st I had 21 of 38 forms returned to me last year. I have a spreadsheet made so it will be EASY to update your info. Thank you so much for taking the time to fill those out! I am pleased that so many of you have emailed me to ask about District times and dates. It is my pleasure to respond to you as soon as possible! I look forward to seeing you in St. Ignace at the Celebration! I met Hannah from the Methodist Children Home at Annual Conference. She is very excited to speak at our Celebration. Kathy Mallory did a great job getting securing her to come up and share the story of the Home ministry. How great it would be if every unit sent a check for our offering to the Methodist Children Home! See you October 6 th! TREASURER Barb Akins Hello I am Barb Akins, the new Marquette District Treasurer. I have already had the pleasure of speaking with some of you on the phone since assuming this job, and look forward to speaking and meeting many more of you through the next few months and at the annual meeting. Just a little introduction for those of you who don t know me. (which is probably most of you) I am a member of Menominee UMC, and also the bookkeeper for our church, as well as for our own business and our local Concert Association. So yes, I am kind of crazy in that I enjoy doing this kind of work! (Ed. Note: We needed that kind of crazy!) Since I took over the treasurer s duties on May 1, I have tried to take care of all the loose ends I was aware of, such as SMR submissions that had not been received. I think they are all accounted for, but if I have overlooked one, please contact me either by email (vinpno@gmail.com) or phone (906) 863 7387. If there is anything I can do to help your unit with financial records, please let me know. I want to express my appreciation to Kathy Mallory, past Marquette District UMW treasurer, and to Janet Muntz, current DAC UMW treasurer, for all their help getting me up to speed as quickly as possible! Also, a big thanks to all of the unit officers for your patience and understanding through this whole process. I hope we can keep things running smoothly as the year continues. EDUCATION, INTERPRETATION, AND SOCIAL ACTION Carol Tembreull & Darlene Pruess Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior to all of you across the Marquette District. Summer has finally arrived in all its glory, with flowers blooming, and the beautiful sunny days. We would encourage all of you to read your Response magazines, there are so many excellent articles in them, and also to participate in the Reading Program. There are many books to choose from, and the books increase our awareness of happenings around the world. Some things we would like you all to learn about this year, and perhaps have UMW programs on these 3 forms of violence: gun violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Our mission starts at home, and in our churches, community, and it grows throughout the world. Start making plans to attend the Annual Celebration and the Mission U of the North in Gaylord on October 19 th & 20 th. Work on this year s Mission Objectives (due Sept. 15) and your in-gathering projects. PROGRAM RESOURCES (READING PROGRAM) Beth Clark & Moira Cowling The UMW District Library is now housed at Trinity UMC in Iron Mountain. There are many great books to read. Be sure to check your local libraries for copies. The lists are available online at unitedmethodistwomen.com/readingprogram There is also information to recommend a book. Remember you only need to read one book in each category. If you have checked out a book at the last Annual Celebration or the Spiritual Growth Retreat, please be sure to return them at the District Celebration. When you do check out a book, be sure to put your name, phone number, or email. We can use this information to remind you about returning the books. We will have a variety of new books to sell and check our at. the October meeting. See you there! List of Readers due Sept 15 th NOMINATIONS Bobbi Sundquist LATE BREAKING NEWS! Beth Gruber from Marquette has agreed to serve as a member of the Detroit Conference Nominating Committee. This is a wonderful chance for the UP to be represented and to help play a role in the future strength of the Conference. Sharon Rice, also from Marquette, has agreed to become a member of the Marquette District Nominating Committee. Her enthusiasm and resources will be a valuable addition to the committee. Our heartfelt appreciation and support go out to Beth & Sharon as they take on their new responsibilities. (They will officially be voted in at our Annual Celebration.) Thanks, also, to all who answered my calls for help during the search for a treasurer. Your prayers, support, and suggestions truly made a difference. VICE PRESIDENT: Kathy Mallory Our Annual Celebration is at St. Ignace UMW. Our speaker will be Hannah Heebner from the Children s Home Society of Michigan. At our officers meeting in April, I came up with the idea of having each unit bring a gift as a way of helping them and getting the Units more personally involved. I have been in contact with Hannah to see how we can help the Children s Home, besides giving them the in-gathering offering, which we will do. I told her we understood that she has a long drive to be able to be with us, and we would like to send her back with as many supplies as we could. See the separate shopping list on the next page.
