What is WordPress? WordPress is a free content management system, which has been around for 10+ years. Content management systems allow a users to manage content from a web browser without any knowledge of website coding. WordPress is used by more than 18.9% of the top 10 million websites as of August 2013. [11, 1] What is the Website Manager App? Website manager was built in-house for the purpose of document management. This application will be the place to upload all public documents for partons, parents, etc. Some documents that may be upload can include but not limited to are: Take home packet, flyers, classroom documents. What is Google Calendars? Google Calendar is a free time-management web application offered by Google. Google account is required to use this service. [11, 2] What does what? WordPress Website Manager App Google Calendars Manage main site content which includes all pages and posts. e.g. About page. Document management, for uploading all public documents. Building and Staff calendars published to the calendar page on the schools site. 3
WordPress Logging into the administration section The admin section of the website can be accessed by putting /wp-admin at the end of the main URL of your site. You will be prompted for your credentials. e.g. http://spe.lsr7.org/wp-admin e.g. http://lse.lsr7.org/wp-admin Forgot username From the wp-admin login page, click Lost your password?. Follow the steps to reset your password via email, this email will contain your username. Resetting your password From the wp-admin login page, click Lost your password?. Follow the steps to reset your password via email. Different functions within the administration The key functions you will be using within WordPress are;; Posts, Media, WMA, Pages, Calendars and Profile. The highlighted red area is the navigation bar. Administrator view once logged into WordPress administration. View may change with upgraded versions of WordPress. 4
WordPress - Posts [3] Main posts page;; move your mouse and hover over each post for options to display. Overview Posting can have different outcomes based on theme selection. The core theme that we are using places all posts on the homepage [4]. These are located right under the picture slider. The last four posts will only show. To begin working with Posts, click Posts from the navigation bar. Posts - Add New, Edit, Delete, Arrange Adding new posts is easy, click Add new [3]. Edit posts by clicking edit from the main post page [3] on the post desired. For help using the editor, visit page 7. Deleting (red link) can be done in the main posts page [3] by selecting Trash or by opening a post and selecting Trash. Arrange the order they appear on the homepage by just deleting posts, which in turn moves posts up. [4] Homepage view;; the first four recent posts get posted on the homepage. 5
WordPress - Pages [5] Main page of pages;; move your mouse and hover over each page for options to display. Overview Pages are the core pages of your site, some examples are About, Contact, FAQ, etc. To begin working with Pages, click Pages from the navigation bar. Pages - Add New, Edit, Delete, Linking to menu Adding new pages is easy, click Add new [5]. Edit pages by clicking edit from the main page of pages [5] on the page desired. For help using the editor, visit page 7. Deleting (red link) can be done in the main page of pages [5] by selecting Trash or by opening a page and selecting Trash. Linking the page to the main menu is currently disabled. Open a help desk ticket for new pages to be linked - Help Desk > Report a Problem > Web pages > Building Webpage. Pages - Other ways to edit Once logged into the WordPress admin, you may start editing pages from either using the method above or by visiting the site and clicking edit at the bottom of the page desired. 6
WordPress - Working with the Editor [6] Editor or edit view;; highlighted red are items mentioned below. Overview All pages and posts have the same editor, the editor will be used to edit the text and images within these. When editing a page you will not only see the page title and page options but you will also see the editor. This editor is built into WordPress and allows rich text editing (visual tab) or plain text (text tab) [6]. The editor allows you to edit the site content just like you would be editing a word document. Editor Basics You will mainly be working in the visual tab. The arrow below the changing of the editor type is to show or hide options within the editor [6, 1]. Edit text/add by positioning your cursor over the text, change any options to the text 7
using the icons in the toolbar. You may select text and change options too. Add images by positioning your cursor in the page then press Add Media [6, 2] follow the steps to select an existing image or upload a new image. Preview changes you have made to this page by clicking Preview. Commit changes for public view, click Update. Delete by clicking Move to Trash. If this page is live, it removes it from the public. Linking to web addresses is located on the toolbar. Highlight the text or move your cursor in the editor text area where you would like the link. Press the icon that you see below. 8
WordPress - Changing the slider images on the homepage Overview Homepage slider images are controlled at the post level. Each image has its own post. How to add a new image Add a new post, see page 5. 1. Put the image title in box 1 labeled below. 2. On the right;; find tags, begin to type homepage it will appear in a drop down. Click homepage. 3. Click Set featured image, upload your image and click insert. 4. Click Publish, this will add this image as a slider image. To edit this post or others, see page 5 under editing. How to delete a homepage slider image see page 5, for moving a post to the trash. 9
Website Manager App Overview Documents are uploaded via the website manager app. Use your computer login and password to access this app [7].
