UPIKE at Kentucky UPIKE Sports Information @UPIKEAthletics Men s Basketball Notes Scouting Kentucky Kentucky returns 12 players from last season s NCAA national runner-up team that lost to UConn in the nationals finals. Those returners accounted for 67 percent of last season s assists, 65 percent of the minutes played and 59 percent of the scoring. Based on that, and the addition of four talented freshmen, the Wildcats are ranked No. 1 in the AP and Coaches Poll for the second straight preseason. While UPIKE already has a regular-season win under its belt, UK won t be going into the game without experience as it played six games in a Bahamas tour in August. The Wildcats went 5-1 during that trip with junior Alex Poythress leading the team in scoring and rebounding, while newcomer Karl-Anthony Towns was second in both categories. This is the first meeting between UPIKE and Kentucky since 2010 when the Wildcats won 97-66 behind 22 points from Brandon Knight and 21 from Darius Miller. Vance Cooksey led the Bears in the loss with 15 points. UPIKE Routs Grace Bible 100-63 in Opener The Bears got an early start to the 2014-15 season, hosting Grace Bible on Oct. 27 at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. Led by newcomers K.K. Simmons and Macari Brooks scoring 22 points each, UPIKE took 32 more shots than its opponent and forced the Tigers into 32 turnovers while only committing 10 of its own. Bears Named Preseason Favorites in the MSC Nine new faces will be on the court for UPIKE this season, but respect in the Mid-South Conference remains the same as the league s coaches picked the Bears as the preseason favorites according to a poll released by conference officials. UPIKE tallied 58 voting points and received three of the nine first-place votes. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Georgetown is second in the poll with 54 points and two first-place nods and Campbellsville rounds out the top three, matching the Bears in first-place votes, but collecting just 52 points. No starters return for UPIKE, including the loss of four NAIA All- Americans, which finished the 2013-14 season with a 31-3 record and ranked fifth in the NAIA Postseason Top-25 Poll. The Bears lost in the second round of the national championship to St. Gregory s (Okla.). 2013-14 a Season to Remember The Bears dominiated the Mid-South Conference last season like never before, posting a record 17-1 mark in league play, while also posting a program-record 31 wins. All five starters were named All-MSC, Kelly Wells won his first MSC Coach of the Year honor and the Bears swept the MSC Regular-Season and Tournament Championships for the first time since the 2000-01 season, its first in the conference. Kenny Manigault Ready to Break Out in New Role Kenny Manigault only started one game last season after transferring in from Wichita State, but that doesn t mean he didn t contribute. He played 23.5 minutes per game, averaging 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. Manigault, a highly athletic player who brought the house down with a thunderous slam at last season s NAIA National Championship, figures to find that consistent spot in the lineup in 2014-15 after tallying 17 points and seven rebounds in the season-opening win over Grace Bible. Brayboy, Moore and Still Waiting for Clearance from the NAIA Senior James Still and juniors Alex Brayboy and Curtis Moore will not be available for UPIKE s first few contests as they await academic clearance from the NAIA. Nine Newcomers For UPIKE, Including Four with NCAA Div. I Experience As many as nine new faces could be on the floor for the Bears in 2014-15, including three who transferred in from NCAA Div. I schools, including Still from Eastern Michigan, Brayboy from Lipscomb, K.K. Simmons from Kent State and Macari Brooks who originally signed with DePaul before playing at Blinn College last season. UPIKE Opens Season Ranked No. 2 in NAIA Poll The Bears started the season ranked second in the NAIA Coaches Preseason Top-25 Poll, their second highest preseason mark in program history after starting in the top spot following the 2011 NAIA National Championship. UPIKE was ranked No. 1 for two weeks last season before being upset at Georgetown. Kelly Wells Kelly Wells enters his ninth season as the head coach of the University of Pikeville men s basketball team in 2014-15. Wells has put together a 180-78 record at UPIKE, including winning the 2011 NAIA National Championship. The Morehead, Ky., native was named the NAIA Coach of the Year following that championship season. UPIKE has put together seven 20-win seasons in the last eight years under Wells guidance. Included in that run is the program s first two 30-win campaigns in 2010-11 and 2013-14. Last season, the Bears were 31-3 overall and reached their third NAIA National Tournament with Wells. The 31 wins are the most in program history, while the 17 Mid-South Conference wins are a league record. This is Wells 19th season overall as a head coach (391-181), spending one season at Hawaii Pacific in 2005-06, eight seasons at Mason County High School from 1997-2004 and three seasons at Marion County High School from 1995-97. As a college coach, Wells currently holds a 188-97 record through 10 seasons. At Mason County, Wells captured the 2003 Kentucky State Championship and was runnerup in 2004. He was named coach of the year after both seasons, coaching Chris Lofton who would go on to be an All-American at the University of Tennessee. As a player, Wells was a three-year men s basketball letterman at Morehead State from 1992-94. Wells prepped at Rowan County High School, leading the team to three trips to the Kentucky Sweet 16 while earning First-Team All-State honors twice in 1989 and 1990. Wells resides in Pikeville with his wife Shawne and their children, Kaylee and Mason.
