Co-financed by the ERDF - Made possible by the Cooperation Among SMEs Toward Logistic Excellence Database of Important Educational Institutions in the Field of Logistics in Baden-Wuerttemberg CASTLE Forum Meeting Maribor, 29 th September 2009 Martin Brandt KLOK e.v. Put the organiztion s logo here

1. Best Practice Overview 1/2 Database of Important Educational Institutions in the Field of Logistics in Baden- Wuerttemberg Information about: - special logistics degree programmes - business administration degrees with a focus on logistics - engineering degrees with an emphasis on logistics Focus is on the German State of Baden-Wuerttemberg 2

1. Best Practice Overview 2/2 Bodies involved in the project/initiative: KLOK Logistics Cooperation Centre Universities, schools and training institutions KLOK sets up the website and designs the layout, the other partners check twice a year. 3

2. Concrete Results of the Project The website must cover all relevant institutions and generally be rather complete. For the time being, there are 44 relevant logistics trainings courses held by not much less institutions. The professors and teachers are regularly asked to update their information. They do give feedback that allows to monitor the project. There are several main outcomes: - KLOK gets known for the data base, - KLOK is in regular contact with all teaching and training institutions, - the teaching and training institutions get a benchmark, - anyone interested in the field gets comprehensive information. 4

2. Concrete Results of the Project 5

3. Cooperation Issues. Publics Role Without the public sector, such a comprehensive data base cannot be built, because there is no market for the resulting information. There is interest in the information at all educational institutions. The response has therefore been very good. The information is published and shared. Without the cooperation, information about logistics education would just be handled on the individual websites and brochures, sometimes well hidden, sometimes presented very straightforward. The private institutions are not (yet) fully included, because their offerings often change at short notice and often are tailored on the spot to individual needs. The public sector should know how transport logistics is taught and how to approach the transport logistics knowledge! 6

4. Implementation Steps Describe implementation steps of the project process and the detailed content of the practice - First thoughts about the content of the database and design considerations. - Internet and literature research to identify the schools and universities providing courses in the logistics sector. - Letter to the educational institutions with the request for a self-portrayal of their courses and programmes. - Waiting for the answers. - Creation of the database. - Entering the data. - Database is online. - Feedback from the educational institutions and resulting changes. - Update every six month. This took about one year. No legal framework. No explicit budget; this was done within the general work plan of KLOK as a logistics competence centre. 7

5. Problems, Critical Success Factors, Lessons Learned Relevant difficulties: - There must be a time budget allocated, and the work must stay on course, although the daily work usually appears more pressing. - The involved institutions were very difficult to identify. Logistics is often only one aspect of a business or technical degree programme. - The ongoing Bologna-process in Germany tesulted in ongoing strong changes. How do/did these difficulties influence the achievement of the goals? - The person in charge had to do much of the work through her own initiative. 3 critical success factors: - Initiative by LoCC with good communication - Coverage of the field - Frequent updates The following points are decisive to the success of such a project: - A thorough preparatory research. - Continuous contact between the coordinating authority and the participating institutions. - Regular updates of content. 8
