2 Art, Design & displays Policy Rationale At Sinai School, we are concerned with the education of the whole child and the development of Art and Craft skills will enable the achievement of the personal fulfilment and satisfaction of the child. Sinai School believes that art is a vital part of the education of all children. Our children s use and understanding of the visual language of art needs to be developed by effective teaching and by a planned sequence of experiences. Art and craft plays an important part across the whole Primary Curriculum. It is cross-curricular and every subject uses it for visual imagery. Years 1 6 Art lessons are taught by a qualified Art teacher (PGCE Art). The majority of projects are cross curricular in nature and make links to subjects that other teachers are teaching at the same time. Purpose: The purpose of this policy is to describe our practice of Art & Design and the principles upon which this is based. The role of the coordinator: The Art Co-ordinator will Review and evaluate the school plan and policy document regularly to ensure that it meets the requirements of the National Curriculum, is accessible and familiar to all staff, and is modified to include significant changes, new resources within the school. Monitor continuity and progression in art by consultation with colleagues and observation of pupils work. Be a source of reference for colleagues and ensure they are aware of new developments. Monitor resources. Give guidance on procedures for assessment and recording and monitor consistency. Monitor to ensure there is no significant omission or unnecessary repetition of subject coverage. Keep up to date of developments in the teaching of art and attend or encourage colleagues to attend professional INSET when appropriate. Aim: Our aim at the is to provide an art curriculum, which will enable all children to reach their full potential in learning art through investigating and making and through development of their knowledge and understanding of the subject. 1
3 Objectives: To achieve this aim we have planned a range of activities, which will meet the National Curriculum for Art Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study for pupils to: Record responses, including observations of the natural and made environment. Gather resources and materials and use them to stimulate and develop ideas. Explore and use two and three-dimensional media, working on a variety of scales. Review and modify their work as it progresses. Provide pupils with the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas, feelings and experiences in a visual and tactile form. Develop understanding of the work of artists, craftsmen and designers from a range of times, cultures, and apply this knowledge to their own work. Respond to and evaluate art, craft and design in their own and others work enabling them to become visually literate. Complete regular common drawing tasks that will take place on a termly basis. Children will take their common drawing task book through the school, ensuring they are evaluating and assessing their progress and development in art. Help children to develop socially through collaborative working and provide opportunities for them to reach their full potential regardless of cultural background or ability, in line with the schools equal opportunity policy. Whilst art will at times be related to topic work or other cross-curricular links, specific activities will also be planned to provide development of specific skills through focused practical tasks and where the supervision of art activities is delegated to non-teaching assistants they will be well briefed and able to support pupils effectively. Other planned opportunities are included within the Jewish Studies Curriculum and Cultural Diversity Programme. Progression and continuity are ensured by reference to schemes of work and awareness of the activities to be presented to the children. Plans will take into account the time available the resources available and the expertise and experience of the staff. Agreement date of policy:- This policy was developed by the Art subject leader, February School Curriculum - Programme of Study Foundation Stage Art is taught in the Foundation Stage in line with the EYFS curriculum. It comes under the heading of expressive arts & design and involves supporting children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials. ELG 16: Children safely use and explore and variety of material, tools and techniques, experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function. ELG 17: Children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thought and feelings through design and technology and art. 2
4 Key Stage 1 Exploring and developing ideas Recording from first-hand observation, experience and imagination, and exploring ideas Investigating and making art, craft and design Knowledge and understanding Pupils should be taught about: Asking and answering questions about the starting points for their work, and developing their ideas Evaluating and developing work Investigating the possibilities of a range of materials and processes Trying out tools and techniques and applying these to materials and processes, including drawing Representing observations, ideas and feelings, and designing and making images and artefacts Reviewing what they and others have done and saying what they think and feel about it Identifying what they might change in their current work or develop in their future work Visual and tactile elements, including colour, pattern and texture, line and tone, shape, form and space Material and processes used in making art, craft and design Differences and similarities in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers in different times and cultures (for example, sculptors, photographers, architects and textile designers) 3
5 Key Stage 2 Exploring and developing ideas Investigating and making art, craft and design Recording from experience and imagination, selecting and recording from first-hand observation and exploring ideas for different purposes Questioning and making thoughtful observations about starting points and selecting ideas to use in their work Collecting visual and other information (for example, images, materials) to help them develop their ideas, including using a sketchbook Investigating and combining visual and tactile qualities of materials and processes and matching these qualities to the purpose of the work Applying their experience of materials and processes, including drawing, developing their control of tools and techniques Evaluating and developing work Comparing ideas, methods and approaches in their own and others work and saying what they think and feel about them Adapting their work according to their views and describe how they might develop it further Knowledge and understanding KS2 pupils should also be taught about: Visual and tactile elements, including colour, pattern and texture, line and tone, shape, form and space, and how these elements can be combined and organised for different purposes Materials and processes used in art, craft and design and how these can be matched to ideas and intentions Cross curricular Throughout the whole curriculum, opportunities to incorporate Art & Design should be sought. Teaching and Learning The approach to the teaching of Art and design within the school is based on an hour of Art & Design every week. 4
6 The curriculum is delivered by a qualified Art teacher. All activities are differentiated in order to give appropriate levels of challenge. Planning is based upon the National Curriculum. Programmes of Study should inform medium term plans and subsequently weekly planning. Inclusion and equal opportunities All children are provided with equal access to the Art & Design curriculum. We aim to provide suitable learning opportunities regardless of gender, ethnicity or home background. Health and Safety All pupils will be taught to use materials, tools and techniques for practical work, safely and in accordance with Health and Safety requirements. (Information available) All adults working with pupils in art will be made aware of the health and safety implications and have access to any guidelines used by the school and be aware of the Schools First Aid Policy. Resources The Governors and Head Teacher are responsible for setting the budget. There is a central resource of frequently used items kept in the Art room. The school endeavours to build up a range of natural and manufactured objects for use, as stimulus for observation and imagination and staff will be encouraged to make individual collections. Pupils will be given opportunity to learn through real experiences, teacher prepared material, TV, IT, gallery visits or visits by artists or crafts people as appropriate. Display and presentation Members of the Art department will display select work from each year group in an area outside year 4 called the Art Gallery. Each year group will be given the remainder of pupils work to display around their classroom areas with text supplied by the art department. General school displays The Art department will endeavour to make displays around the school when asked to do so. However we are always available to give teachers, ideas, suggestions and help to make their own displays. Assessment, We have various key skills we aim pupils to acquire during their stay at Sinai. Every year we aim for pupils to progress from level 1 (by the beginning of year 1) to level 5 (by the end of year 6). We therefore assess pupil s progress against these level indicators. In addition to this, pupils are required (once a year) to create a piece of artwork under exam conditions so that we can ascertain how much they remember of what they have been taught. 5
7 Recording We take photographs of every piece of work each child makes so that we have a visual record of their progress. Reporting We write two reports per year and also provide verbal feedback to parents at parents evening. Monitoring and Evaluation The Curriculum leaders, alongside SLT, are responsible for monitoring and evaluating curriculum progress. This is done through lesson observations, pupil interviews, staff discussions and audit of resources. Assessment After each project children s work will be assessed to ascertain whether they have met specific learning objectives. Every year we aim for children to move up a level. Year 1 Level 1 through to Year 6 Level 6. Review The Art & design policy will be reflected in our practise. The policy will be reviewed annually. 6
