HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL CANCER BIOLOGY & THERAPEUTICS PROGRAM CBT A joint initiative of the Harvard Medical School Office of Global Education and the Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) 2015-2016 An intensive 12-month blended-learning certificate program by leading Harvard Medical School faculty and researchers, designed to provide its participants with skills and knowledge in cancer biology and understanding of the latest and most innovative preventive and therapeutic approaches

HMS MISSION To create and nurture a diverse community of the best people committed to leadership in alleviating human suffering caused by disease.

DEAN S MESSAGE The Harvard Medical School Cancer Biology and Therapeutics (HMS CBT) program is a yearlong certificate course that will begin October 2015. The program is designed for clinicians and scientists specializing in cancer, as well as being a catalyst for participants in other disciplines to get a current survey of the major issues in cancer research. Using a modern, interactive approach to the teaching and learning of the cancer biology that shapes modern preventive and therapeutic approaches, the HMS CBT program combines traditional, face-to-face teaching methods with interactive webinars and online instructional study materials. This approach allows students to acquire information individually and at their own pace, while also providing in-person workshops for team-based, facilitated problem solving. The emphasis on team-based learning is designed to model the team-science approach that is critical for success in contemporary clinical and research environments. In the HMS CBT program, scholars will work together in groups to collaborate, discuss and solve cancer-targeting strategies, while also learning from each other. I encourage you to participate in this innovative and interactive program. Jeffrey S. Flier, MD Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Harvard Medical School 1 CBT

About the Program Beginning in October 2015, the HMS Cancer Biology and Therapeutics Program (HMS CBT) is a 12-month blended-learning program designed to provide participants with deep knowledge of the cancer biology that shapes modern preventive and therapeutic approaches. HMS-CBT is a joint initiative of the Harvard Medical School Office of Global Education and the Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI). HMS CBT will develop this expertise through an understanding of the molecular, cellular and host events that drive tumor formation, progression, and metastasis. How this knowledge is being used to develop our growing set of therapeutic and preventive approaches to fight cancer will be highlighted along with opportunities for participants to consider what new strategies are in development now. The program will cover important topics in screening, detection and diagnosis, as well as studies in clinical cancer genetics, pathology, and drug development. Leading faculty from HMS, HMS-affiliated hospitals, and other schools at Harvard, as well as other leading international institutions and organizations will be involved, both as faculty and as mentors. THE HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL Cancer Biology & Therapeutics Program 2

HMS-CBT will have the following key features Attendance at three in-person workshops at the program s beginning, mid-point and conclusion: F October 24 28, 2015: Doha, Qatar F March 18 20, 2016: London, UK, or March 13-15, 2016: Shenzhen China F October 26 29, 2016: Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts 15 interactive live webinars with world experts in cancer 45 Pre-recorded lectures available 24/7 The program will be designed to be of use to clinicians and scientists specializing in cancer, as well as being a catalyst for participants in other disciplines to get a current survey of the major issues in cancer research. Participants will develop many opportunities to establish collaborations and exchanges with other experts in their region or across the world. 3 CBT

Unique Advantages of the Program The HMS Office of Global Education has created a unique pedagogic model that delivers the one-onone interaction, superior quality and true innovation of the HMS educational experience to participants worldwide at the height of their careers. It provides participants with knowledge, skills training and access to world leaders in cancer care and research. Even more, it creates a global network that has proven to be a key component of individual success and regional advancement. Participants receive experience-based training on how to work effectively with collaborators across borders and time zones, leveraging technology to create global collaborative research efforts. The CBT program uses the latest educational approaches to provide a unique and comprehensive understanding of the cancer biology blended with therapeutic strategies, challenges and opportunities. Jon C. Aster, MD, PhD Professor, Pathology, Harvard Medical School Associate Pathologist, Brigham and Women s Hospital The CBT students learn the basics and cutting edge concepts about our current knowledge of cancer biology and therapeutics from the experts who helped shape this information as well as from other researchers attending the CBT program. David H. Roberts, MD Dean for External Education Harvard Medical School THE HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL Cancer Biology & Therapeutics Program 4

CURRICULUM The overarching goal of this course is to present the current major concepts in cancer risk, etiology, detection, diagnosis, and treatment to provide course graduates with the knowledge and skills to begin or advance active participation in cancer research, to understand the principles in cancer treatment as it applies in their region, or to be ready to follow future developments in the rapidly changing field of cancer research. The curriculum will be divided into 4 major components: 1. The key fundamental features of cancers will be framed by exploring our developing understanding of the hallmarks of cancer, a central paradigm of cancer biology 2. Approximately 40 key concepts in cancer research and therapy development will be presented in depth but each will be framed within clinical disease examples 3. Presentations by world leaders in cancer research through live interactive seminars on cutting edge subjects 4. A series of cross cutting exercises that feature active engagement in group learning activities will be used to allow deeper explorations in areas of personal interest for each participant Each teaching objective of this course will be based on current cancer research literature, and participants will actively follow major research breaking stories that occur in real time during the program s 12 months. Important historical moments of cancer discovery will be used to illustrate key principles of how our current views of cancer development and treatment have formed. Participants will meet and interact with some of the leaders in modern cancer research and have time to establish lasting relationships with other similarly minded individuals from their home region and/or throughout the world. HMS CBT will consist of approximately 45 pre-recorded online lectures (ROLs) made available 24/7 on a learning management web platform, approximately 15 live webinars, and 11 days of face-to-face workshop training (Three in-person workshops: One in Doha, one in London or Shenzhen, and one in Boston). 5 CBT
