Ever thought of being an Engineer? www.glasgow.ac.uk/schools/engineering

There are few courses in the UK that offer the opportunity to develop real products and services that can change people's lives Jude Pullen, Product Design Engineering graduate

What do Engineers do? Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to address the needs of humanity. Engineering influences almost every aspect of our lives. Everything in our homes, from the TV and fridge to the paint on the walls, has been made possible through engineering. Professional Engineers design the cars we drive, the MP4 players we listen to and the planes we fly in and they make the construction of the bridges we cross and the buildings we live in possible. Engineers are continually changing our world through better communications, advances in medical instrumentation and improved irrigation and water supplies in the developing world. What do I need to do at school to study Engineering at University? Each University will have slightly different requirements and it is a good idea to find out what these are before making final subject choices at school. Generally, Maths and Physics are the two main subjects that universities look for when admitting students to Engineering degree courses. Some specialist Engineering subjects have additional specific requirements e.g. for Chemical Engineering, it may be necessary to study Chemistry at school.

There are feats of Engineering all around us - I wanted to be part of that. Che Wan Khairuddin Samsudin, Engineering student

What can I study at University? Universities offer a range of Engineering degrees ranging from traditional discipline based degrees such as Aeronautical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Electronics and Electrical Engineering through to programs that blend technology and the arts such as Product Design Engineering and Electronics with Music. How much will I earn? It is impossible to say how much any individual will earn but, in a recent study conducted by Universities UK, it was found that, with the exception of Medical graduates, Engineering graduates earn more on average in their working lives than any other type of graduate. What can I do when I graduate from University? Most Engineering graduates decide to go into a career in Engineering. This could be as a designer, a consultant, or part of a team working on a major engineering project for a multi-national company. Many people mistakenly think that Engineers spend their time in boiler suits and hard hats. Professional Engineers do occasionally wear these but usually only when they are making a shop floor or site visit to check on the progress of a project that they are monitoring or leading. Graduates don t always follow a career in the specific branch of Engineering that they studied. This is because Engineering degrees give students a range of skills that they can apply in almost any environment and employers recognise this. That is also why Engineering graduates are able to follow other career paths such as in law, accountancy, banking, insurance and retail to name but a few.
