Here are just some of the ways you can tap into the student talent pool at The University of Manchester: Part-time staff for evenings or weekends Summer vacation to provide cover for staff on annual leave Temporary cover for busy periods including Christmas Completing a project or placement of up to 12 months Internships leading toward your graduate scheme Many of our students have excellent technical, language, research and other specialist skills sought by employers. Recruitment help available at no cost The Careers & Employability Division has a specialist work experience team. They are available to help you at every step including advice on writing a vacancy advertisement, deciding a salary level, and advertising a vacancy to our students. All our services are free-of-charge to both employers and students. Advertising and recruitment We advertise vacancies free of charge via our careers management system, CareersLink, with thousands of registered Manchester students Placements are circulated to relevant academic schools at the university Submit a vacancy by: Registering your organisation with CareersLink at We offer advice on: The best times of year to advertise your opportunities Students availability and numbers undertaking industrial placements Appropriate salary levels for placements, vacation work and part-time jobs Identifying placement contacts in academic schools if you wish to develop stronger links across the university Meeting students on campus and profile raising. Our Employer Liaison team manages a range of events and fairs to help you recruit students and graduates.

3 Recruitment Options Industrial Placements (usually 9-12 months) Placements are an excellent way to employ temporary skills to support a team or major project. They are also a way to employ a students on a trial basis, while assessing their suitability for graduate positions with your organisation. Approximately 400 Manchester students undertake an industrial placement every year. Students typically study the following subjects, which include a formal placement year as part of the degree: Engineering, IT, Sciences, Modern Languages or Textiles. Placements are arranged some months in advance of the start date. We suggest advertising your vacancy between October and Easter. Placements start between June and September and usually last for 9-12 months. Salaries: 12,000-14,000 on average ( 14,000 for technical placements) The following programmes include a placement: Faculty of Engineering and Physcial Sciences Chemical Engineering Chemistry Computer Science Electrical and Electronic Engineering Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering Material Science Textiles Faculty of Humanities Architecture (after completion of BA Architecture) Languages, Linguistics and Cultures (Year abroad) Management and Leisure (6 weeks) Planning and Landscape (up to 3 months) IT Management for Business Faculty of Life Sciences Anatomical Sciences Biochemistry Biological and Computer Science (Bioinformatics) Biology, and a wide range of related courses Zoology Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences Dentistry Human Communication (placements within NHS) Medicine (placements within NHS) Nursing and Midwifery Optometry Many other subjects, e.g. Management, allow students to take a year out from their studies to undertake a placement should they wish. 4 Recruitment Options Vacation Work The summer vacation is a good time to recruit students as they are available from mid-june until mid-september. The majority of students work during the summer vacation period, and many also work during the Easter or Christmas vacation. Students typically undertake work in a range of fields from professional summer internships through to casual work, volunteering or work overseas. Salaries: per week on average Small to medium size organisations can utilise the STEP programme, which arranges an eight-week placement scheme over the summer vacation. Website: Part-time jobs/casual Work Over 50% of our students undertake part-time work whilst studying. They are available in the evenings or weekends and at occasional times during weekdays (in between lecture times). Examples of part-time and casual jobs that are often filled by students are: IT support, programming and web design Administration/data inputting Hospitality Telesales, marketing Retail or bar work Translation/interpreting Customer surveys/market research Help at promotional events/conferences Due to demands of their academic study, we recommend that students do not undertake more than 15 hours per week except during vacation periods. Salaries: Minimum wage and upwards. The main rate of minimum wage from 1st October 2011 is 6.08 per hour. Skilled roles may have a higher rate, e.g. IT or translation. Contact us for advice. Projects Projects can be paid, however some students also undertake these on an unpaid basis as part of their course. These can cover a range of topics and should be specific tasks which could be completed within a few months. Projects should ideally be interesting and challenging, giving students a real insight into your organisation, as well as providing you with tangible results. 5 Frequently Asked Questions What information should I include in a vacancy? Vacancies should include some information about the company, details about what the job involves and requirements from the applicants. The work experience team can help you to draft your vacancy advert. In general they should be no more than 10 lines long - more details can be sent to the applicants, if necessary. As a rough guide, vacancies should include: What the organisation does Brief description of the main job duties Degree subject/s required for the job Skills and qualities applicants need to have Details of how to apply and who/where to apply to A closing date (if applicable). If not, the vacancy will be live on CareersLink for a calendar month. Can I employ international students? While students are enrolled on a programme at The University of Manchester, international students are eligible to work part-time during their studies and full time during the summer or on a course-related industrial placement. For more information on recruiting international students during and after study, see our website at: Can I employ a student without a national insurance number? It is legal to employ a student that has not yet obtained an NI number, provided they have the relevant permit and legal status. International students will often have no previous working experience in the UK so will not have a number until they apply for one, which can take some time to be processed. You should be able to give them a temporary number in the interim.
