School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences 12 th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium May 16, 2013 Skelton Conference Center The Inn at Virginia Tech Blacksburg, Virginia

The Virginia Tech Wake Forest University Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Student Chapter hosts an annual School of Biomedical Engineering Graduate Student Research Symposium to provide students with the opportunity to interact and exchange research ideas with colleagues and industry personnel. This symposium promotes research collaboration between the two campuses and cutting edge facilities, such as the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. On behalf of the School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences, the Biomedical Engineering Society Student Chapter would like to offer you the unique opportunity to join other industries in supporting this collaborative event and contribute to the development of future leaders in the biomedical engineering community. Please consider your attendance at this exciting meeting this Spring. Sincerely, The VT-WFU Biomedical Engineering Society Executive Officers Vanessa Alphonse Ashley Hayes Patrick Thayer Jill Urban Alana Sampson Nick Vavalle Laura Reese Emma Moran Presidents Vice Presidents Treasurers Secretaries For more information about the VT-WFU BMES Student Chapter, please visit us at www.sbes.vt.edu/bmes/

The Virginia Tech - Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering & Sciences (SBES) is a joint graduate program formed in 2003 to bring together three prestigious academic institutions: the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. Each university contributes diverse educational and research opportunities to students, providing a unique graduate experience. The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University College of Engineering in Blacksburg, Virginia is consistently ranked among the top undergraduate and graduate engineering programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report and America s Best Graduate Schools 2009. Virginia Tech is consistently placed in the top 10% of accredited engineering school spending due to the addition of first-class research facilities, such as the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center (CRC) and the Institute of Critical Technology and Applied Sciences. Specifically, the CRC was named the 2010 Outstanding Research Park by the Association of University Research Parks. Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC consists of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine which ranks 32nd in NIH funding among American medical schools, and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's best hospitals. Located within the Medical Center is the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine, which is the first free-standing facility in the world devoted to regenerative medicine and was the first institute to implant a laboratory grown organ into a human. The Virginia Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, VA is built upon collaboration between two leading universities: Virginia Tech and University of Maryland, College Park. Included in this institute are opportunities for practice of translational medicine and access to superior characterization and diagnostic equipment.

Each year, approximately 125 students and faculty attend the symposium. Graduating students present their Ph.D. and M.S. work as oral presentations and other students showcase their current work as posters. Typically, the symposium consists of 20 oral presentations and 50 poster presentations on topics including injury and musculoskeletal biomechanics, biomedical imaging, cell and tissue engineering, and nanotechnology for medical applications.
