Wireless network instructions Note: This guide is for use with a BlackBerry 9000 mobile device and BlackBerry Desktop Software version 6.1.0.35. Other BlackBerry devices and software may function in a similar fashion. Checking firmware version In order to connect to UoA-WiFi, you need to be running up-to-date firmware. To check the version of your firmware, press the menu button on your BlackBerry then, select Options: In Options, select About: On the resulting list, check that for smartphone, you are running at least v5.0.0.681, and that your WLAN version is at least 3.0.0.113, then, proceed to the Check security certificate section below. Otherwise, you will need to update your firmware as follows: Updating firmware version Note: In order to update your BlackBerry firmware, your computer must be running at least version 5.x of the BlackBerry Desktop Software. You can download it from: http://blackberry.com. Connect your BlackBerry to your computer. Start both devices then, start the BlackBerry Desktop Software program. You should also backup your BlackBerry settings. To do this, select Back up now:
In Back Up Options, for Backup type select Full, use the Browse function to select the folder where you will backup your files then, select Back Up: When backup is completed, you can proceed with installing the BlackBerry firmware. You can download the approved up-to-date firmware by selecting your BlackBerry s service provider from the list at: http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp After downloading the firmware, close the BlackBerry Desktop Software, then double-select on the downloaded firmware package to run it. The package will automatically self-extract onto your computer. When the process is completed, restart BlackBerry Desktop Software, select Device then, select Update: If a newer firmware version is available, you ll be able to install it on your BlackBerry. Checking the security certificate The UoA-WiFi network requires that you have a specific security certificate installed. To check if you already have this certificate installed, press the menu button on your BlackBerry then, select Options: Page 2 of 6
In Options, select Security Options: In Security Options, select Advanced Security Options: In Advanced Security Options, select Certificates: If AddTrust External CA Root Certificate is in the list, proceed to the Setup UoA-WiFi section below. Otherwise, you will need to install the security certificate as follows: Installing the security certificate Using your computer, download the security certificate from the following URL: http://www.auckland.ac.nz/webdav/site/central/shared/for/current-students/student-it-essentials/wirelessnetwork/documents/addtrustexternal%20ca%20root.cer Save the certificate file on your computer, connect your BlackBerry to your computer and start the BlackBerry Desktop Software. You will also need to ensure that you ve enabled viewing of Certificates on the BlackBerry Desktop Software. To do this, select Tools then, select Desktop options: Page 3 of 6
In Desktop options, tick Use certificate synchronization then, select OK: In the next window, select Certificates: Select the Root tab then, select Import Certificates: Now, navigate to where you saved the certificate file, select the file then, select open to add the certificate to your list of root certificates. Find AddTrust External in the list and tick the corresponding box then, select Sync: Page 4 of 6
When the process is completed, the security certificate should be installed on your BlackBerry. To verify, repeat the above steps for Checking the security certificate. Setting up UoA-WiFi To check the version of your firmware, press the menu button on your BlackBerry then, select Manage Connections: Select Set Up Wi-Fi then, select Next: In Set Up Wi-Fi Connection, select Scan For Networks: In Available Wi-Fi Networks select UoA-WiFi: Page 5 of 6
In Wi-Fi security, for User name and User password, enter your University NetID and Password then, select Connect: In Connection Successful, give the network a Profile Name such as UoA-WiFi then, select Next: To complete setup, select Finish: Browsing the internet When your Blackberry device has connected to the UoA-WiFi network, you should be able to browse the internet.
