SUMMER 2015 CURRICULUM/COLLEGE CREDIT Associate Degree Nursing Our Nursing curriculum provides knowledge, skills and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs that impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN). SUMMER 2015 CURRICULUM/COLLEGE CREDIT focus on Healthcare career training Emergency Medical Science The Emergency Medical Science program is designed to prepare you to enter the workforce as a paramedic. Employment opportunities include ambulance services, fire and rescue agencies, air medical services, specialty areas of hospitals, industry, educational institutions and government agencies. We offer a two-semester part-time Advanced EMT certificate, a diploma and a degree that take two years to complete (fewer classes per semester for diploma). Polysomnography Our Polysomnography curriculum can prepare you, working in conjunction with a physician, to perform and interpret sleep studies and to provide comprehensive clinical evaluations that are required for the diagnosis of sleep related disorders. Health & Fitness Science The Health and Fitness Science program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for employment in the fitness and exercise industry: in commercial fitness clubs, YMCA s/ywca s, wellness programs in business and industry, parks and recreation departments and organizations that implement exercise and fitness programs. Our degree program takes only two years to complete and the certificate can be earned in one semester (four months). One-on-one help from volunteers or peer tutors can help individuals become responsible learners by helping them stay on track with coursework, understand assignments, and improving study skills. Online, Upswing makes it possible for students to search for a subject, see accredited coaches, book a session, and engage in one-on-one coaching. In less than 60 seconds they are talking to their own live coach. This year the college will graduate over seven hundred students at 10 AM on the Boyd Library Green. As a way to honor graduates and alumni of Sandhills, the Alumni Association offers graduates, their friends and family and alumni an opportunity to leave their permanent mark on the campus. The Sandhills Community College Graduate Walk is a beautifully designed brick area; centrally located on campus on the path all graduates pass each May at commencement. Each brick is laser engraved with their name, year of graduation and degree. The Cost of College Credit Courses, Payment and Refunds The North Carolina General Assembly sets tuition rates for in-state and out-ofstate residents. The current rates can be found on our website. If you do not pay the tuition and fees required for your classes by the last day to pay indicated on the current academic calendar, your registration is not complete. In addition, the classes for which you have registered will be dropped and you will need to register again. We accept cash, checks, money orders, credit cards (except American Express), and debit cards. Payment is accepted online through WebAdvisor, in person in the Business Office, via a drop box located outside the Business Office and by mail. A pre-registered curriculum student who officially drops one or more classes prior to the first day of the semester will be eligible for a one-hundred percent tuition refund. The student activity and technology fees will also be refunded if the student officially drops all classes prior to the first day of the semester. Thereafter, a refund of seventy-five percent of only the tuition will be made through the ten percent date of the semester. Students do not qualify for a refund of fees after the one hundred percent date. All tuition will be refunded if a class is canceled. Refunds will be processed within four weeks of the ten percent date. The bricks are available for a $100 contribution to the SCC Alumni Association. Those ordered now will be placed into the walkway prior to Homecoming in October. Whenever I need help I always get directed to the person that can help me the most. Summer Course Credits Can Transfer to Home College Generally, students away at college return home for the summer. When they do, they either find work, travel, volunteer, or take internships. Sandhills Community College often sees many college students home for the summer take college-credit courses and transfer the credits back to their college or university. The cost of a class is usually substantially less at Sandhills when compared to the home college. A few of the subject areas that transfer are: science, English, mathematics, history, humanities, psychology, religion, and sociology. Typically, only the credits transfer, not the grade. Students are advised to verify beforehand with their home college that the credits for the courses they plan to take will transfer. I love that the advisors and teachers are very helpful and available (either through email or in person). Even though I don t get face-to-face time with my online instructors I have to say that I am relieved and impressed that they get back to me through email so quickly. They will compete in mid-may in Mesa, AZ in the NJCAA National Championship. Members of the team are Erica Clinard, Emily Cunningham, Allyson Duranceau, Heather Hancock and Brianna Newton. The Men s Golf Team garnered the Region X title in April. Ediz Kemaloglu won the individual medalist honors as well as Player of the Year. The men s team will defend their 2014 title in early June at the Chautauqua Golf Club in Chautauqua, NY. Members of the team are Henry McGannon, Brandon Grzywacz, Ediz Kemaloglu, Cody Roberts, Alex Austin and Nick Kroustalis. The students from past cademies have ranged in age from 7 to 35, and include people right ut of high school, former military ersonnel, and people who want to change careers, Thomason says. But they all have one thing in common: the desire to learn how to expertly serve their communities with excellent firefighting skills. Our Fire Academy trains students to become competent, confident and fully prepared, adds Instructor Forrest Cox, Captain of the Aberdeen Fire and Rescue Department. We have high expectations of our students and, in turn, we make sure their training is complete and top notch. Justin Taylor, a fulltime firefighter with the Southern Pines Fire Department, graduated from Sandhills Fire Academy in 2012. The instructors are very knowledgeable because they have real experiences to share, Taylor says. They know what we need to not only get certified but also be ready to step into the job. I would recommend Sandhills Fire Academy to anyone interested in a career in fire services, says Austin Moss, also a 2012 graduate of the program and now a fulltime firefighter in the Aberdeen Fire and Rescue Department. The instructors are tough it builds structure. But the instructors are right there to help you if you re struggling. They give one-on-one help where needed. Top Notch Training Center Fire services have changed from the days when primarily a volunteer force. Today, highly trained, competent individuals staff fire and rescue departments. A considerable advantage to cadets in training is Sandhills facility, the Larry R. Caddell Public Safety Training Center. Located on almost 40 acres on Niagara-Carthage Road, this permanent training center is state-of-the art in fire training. A residential burn building, four-story drill tower, and an auto extrication/burn pit help instructors teach fire and rescue techniques in a wide range of situations and circumstances. We create conditions that develop skills you can t learn from books or in a classroom, says Thomason. The feedback we re getting from fire chiefs who have hired our graduates tells us we re on the right track in preparing the cadets. 14
SUMMER 2015 CONTINUING EDUCATION The North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal approves Sandhills Fire Academy program. Job Opportunities Helping graduates secure jobs is an additional advantage of the Sandhills Fire Academy, Cox points out. We have chiefs and deputy chiefs visiting our classes, getting to know our cadets, he says. We have recruiters coming from across the state to discuss job opportunities in their fire departments. Also, we let students know of job openings statewide. Often cadets start the interview and hiring process with departments before graduation. Sandhills cadets get significant assistance with the interview process. We set up a mock interview with each cadet, says Thomason. A panel of fire chiefs evaluate the cadet s interviewing skills and give pointers. Class Five Begins in July Current volunteer firefighters may be eligible for a fee waiver based on their membership with a local, city, county, or state fire department. Firefighter Moss, who graduated from Pinecrest High School in 2008, had been a volunteer at Aberdeen s fire department and had his class fees waived for all his classes at Sandhills Fire Academy. Fire Academy Class Five is a fulltime program with classes held Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. This July academy is a great opportunity for graduating high school seniors who are finishing up in June, says Capt. Thomason. They could walk right out of high school into this five month training and hold employable certification toward a very good career. Those interested in being members of Class Five of the Fire Academy should request more information and an application from Michelle Bauer, Sandhills Fire and Rescue Coordinator at (910) 695-3774. The Cost of Continuing Education Courses, Payment and Refunds A fee schedule is used to determine course fees. This does not include a $5 technology fee for each course with the exception of College & Career Readiness. Course Length Registration Fee 0-24 Hours $70 25-50 Hours $125 50+ Hours $180 A limited number of scholarships may be available. The entire cost of the course will be refunded if requested before it begins or if the course is cancelled. Thereafter, a refund of seventy-five percent if requested after a course begins, but before ten percent of the total class meetings. Summer Holiday Closings The college will be closed on Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day and on Friday, July 3 for Independence Day. Learn with a Friend A minimum number of students is needed for Continuing Education classes. Courses may be cancelled if this minimum number is not met a week prior to the start date.
