Reading mail via the Web on Mail.uh.edu Connecting to mail via the Web Once you have obtained your userid and password, go to the Web Site http://mail.uh.edu You will see the following screen: Click Log on and you will see a dialog box that looks like this: Enter your userid and password and press OK. Note that your userid may differ from the name people see when they receive mail from you. By default, your mail will appear to come from firstname.lastname@mail.uh.edu

After correctly entering your userid and password, you will be taken to a screen that looks like this: This is mail.uh.edu s main screen. You will also get this screen if you click the icon of the paper with the eyeglasses in the upper left of the screen. If you select the Properties button, you will be taken to a page where you can change your password and the time zone. If you click on Log Out you will be logged out of the mail server. In order to completely protect your account you will need to close the browser itself. To change the password, click on the Properties button and this screen will appear: Type Current Password, then New Password and New Password Again. Click on the Save button (not Reset which will reset the information, not the password). The change should take affect immediately.

The Mail Screen If you click the 2 nd icon from the top that looks like a postage stamp, you will see this screen: This is your Inbox. Below is a rundown of what each button does on the horizontal strip: Previous Message displays the message before the current one. Next Message displays the message after the current one. Delete Message removes the message from the header list and puts it in the trash. Compose New Message switches the screen to a Compose window where you can type a new message Reply to Message switches the screen to a Compose window addressed to the sender of the current message. Reply include Message switches the screen to a Compose window containing an indented copy of the current message, addressed to the sender. Forward Message switches the screen to a Compose window containing a bracketed copy of the current message Get New Mail updates the message list with any new mail delivered into your mailbox. Empty Trashcan empties the Trash mailbox Properties sets mail-wide properties such as saving a copy of sent mail and how often to automatically check for new mail. (see section on setting up a folder to save sent mail)

Open Mailbox opens the Open frame containing the directories and mailboxes in your IMAP server. Move Message opens the Move frame where a user can move a message from the mailbox being currently viewed to another mailbox. Help opens a separate browser window containing Help text for Mail. Here is an explanation of the icons on the vertical bar: Top moves to the top of the message header list. Previous 20 displays the previous 20 messages in the list. Next 20 displays the next 20 messages in the list. Bottom moves you to the bottom of the header list. Composing and Sending Mail When you click the Compose New Message button the following screen appears: Steps to compose an email message: 1. Click on the Compose New Message button. An empty compose window apprears. 2. Enter the address of the person the email is to be sent to. 3. Enter the subject in the subject box 4. Enter the email addresses of any people you want to receive a carbon copy (cc:) or blind carbon copy (Bcc:) of the email 5. Enter the text of the message. You may need to scroll down to see the box for it. 6. Include any attachments you want to send

7. When you are done, click the Send button (you may need to scroll down to see it). When the message is sent you are returned to the inbox window. 8. To start over, choose the Clear button. All fields will be cleared but you will remain in the Compose window. 9. To cancel the message and return to the Inbox window, click the Cancel button. Adding an Attachment You can add attachments to your Compose message in one of two ways. 1. Type the exact path to the attachment in the Attachments fired, then click the Attach button. 2. Click Browse. Your file selection box appears. Choose a file and click the Attach button. 3. You can add multiple attachments to your message by repeating one of the two methods above. Using directory services The search function on Mail.uh.edu is helpful if you need to look up someone s electronic mail address. You can reach the search function by clicking on the rolodex button which looks like this: You will be taken to this screen: This search page is designed so that if you know one of the three pieces of information above, you can look for the other information. For instance, if someone has sent you an electronic mail that you don t know on campus, you may type in their email address and their name should come up in the search. Getting Help The question mark with a circle around it is a large help file that can answer many more questions not covered in this document.

How to Set up a Folder to Save Sent Mail Be sure you are in the Inbox. Click on the Properties button. This screen will appear: Check the box in front of Save a copy of outgoing mail in mailbox. Put in the name you want for the sent mail folder in the text box. The folder will appear in your account after you have sent your first email. This mail will also count as part of your quota. You are allowed 10 megabytes in your mailbox. When this amount has been reached, any mail sent to you will be returned as undeliverable until you delete some of the things in your mail account. (Be sure to then empty trash. Things in the trash can count as part of your account quota.)
