Straddling the worlds of theory and application MBA programmes at the Chinese University of Hong Kong The Chinese University of Hong Kong was the first University to establish a full-time MBA degree programme in 1966, followed by a part-time programme in 1977. Years of dedicated work have paid off with worldwide recognition. In 2003, our MBA Programmes were ranked No.1 in East Asia and No. 1 in Asia-Pacific in 2002 by the influential regional business magazine Asia Inc. Our innovativeness and diversification drive us to the leading position. We lay a heavy stress on local relevancy and internationalisation. Local relevancy allows our students to learn business practices relevant to Hong Kong, China and Asia-Pacific, whereas internationalisation enables our students to understand different cultures and ways of doing businesses in a more global context. In addition, we introduced an Integrated Core Course in our full-time MBA Programme last year. The two-year curriculum was then shortened to 18 months. Various business disciplines are taught in a sequential manner. This modular and sequential structure ensures students have an integrated perspective of all business disciplines in a global business environment. Last but not least, students can also gain valuable experience from various activities such as the summer internship, business Practicum Projects, chief executive officers (CEO) talks and executive development series (EDS), international students exchange programme and the mentorship programme etc. Our achievement is also reflected in our 3,200 alumni, who are very successful businesspeople and entrepreneurs, and hold prominent management positions in local and overseas corporations. The Programme is distinguished not only as a uniquely Hong Kong programme, but also one of two business schools in the top 20 where the medium of teaching is bilingual. The Programme, initially offered in 1993, is the first programme of its kind offered in Hong Kong. It is a two-year part-time Programme that is unique in its approach to graduate business education in Hong Kong. In early 2003, the Programme cooperated with RTHK and Cable TV to produce the Talking to CEOs `bl and New Thinking in Management!"#$Radio/TV series. The two series were publicly broadcast between March 2003 and January 2004. Some eminent speakers included Mr Henry Tang, Sir Gordon Wu and Dr William Fung, etc were invited. Another new Talking to CEOs: CEO in the New Century `bl! CEO Radio/TV series will be publicly broadcast on RTHK Radio One and RTHK TV Channel between February and May, 2004. Speakers include Mr Michael Sze, Mr Vincent Cheng and Mrs Eva Cheng, etc. EMBA Admission Application Period: December 15, 2003 March 12, 2004 Contact details: Email: emba@cuhk.edu.hk Tel: (852) 2609 7642 Fax: (852) 2603 5762 Website: www.cuhk.edu.hk/emba 64

Breaking local boundaries, think bigger, go further The continuing economic downturn in Hong Kong has prompted many to seek answers to the important question of how to protect or enhance their careers. The new millennium and China s entry into the WTO offer a new set of challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong. We need to be sensitive to how we can be important players in mainland China, in the greater Chinese community, in this region, and in the community of those who are interested in investing in the region. To capitalise on this opportunity, as individuals, we need to develop a keen sense of globalisation and to acquire the competence that is required for effective cross-national management. The Master of Science programme in Global Business is designed to enhance your competence as a global manager who operates in this region. The curriculum includes courses on Global Leadership, International Negotiation and Conflict Management, and the Global Business Environment, among others. In addition to classroom learning, our students have the opportunity, on a voluntary basis, to study, visit and tour a foreign university and country every year. Contact details: Tel: 2609 7896 Email: mscglb@cuhk.edu.hk URL: www.cuhk.edu.hk/mscglb Master of Science in Business Economics A programme that capitalises on change and transforms weakness to strength Changes and uncertainty are realities, whether in life in general or in the socio-economic environment in particular. Leading an organisation with the objective of maintaining its competitiveness in a changing environment requires not only a deep understanding of the macro and micro environments in which the organisation operates, but also requires creative insights from Business Economics. CUHK s Master of Science in Business Economics, a pioneer programme in this field of specialisation, is committed to executives and business leaders in Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific Region. The curricular emphasis is on enhancing students acumen of the changing microeconomic and macroeconomic environments, and applying economic theories to pertinent business problems. China s significance to Hong Kong is evident, especially after the signing of the CEPA. In line with this trend, the programme has expanded the scope of its China studies. For instance, a course on the Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta economy is added to the curriculum. The Programme is also the first to introduce a Business Seminar Series, where senior business executives serve as guest speakers, to foster the students sharpness on current business issues. From 2004, the programme will introduce five 1. 5 credit-unit elective courses to offer students more flexibility in deciding their paths of study. Planning is also underway for field trips to various Asian countries. It is carefully tailored for seasoned local and mainland accounting and finance executives who desire a more comprehensive knowledge of current theory, concepts, and practice in accounting and finance, and for those who aspire to take up senior accounting and finance positions in either the local or mainland markets. With an equal emphasis on theory and practice, the MAcc programme will enhance participants conceptual knowledge in these rapidly evolving fields, strengthen and enrich their accounting and finance skills, and provide exposure to current best practices in these fields. Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded a Master of Accountancy degree by The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a CFO professional certificate by the Shanghai National Accounting Institute (SNAI). Being the only programme outside of the mainland to offer this CFO professional certificate, the CUHK MAcc programme and its graduates will enjoy a competitive advantage no other local institution can deliver. HKUST MBA program The global perspective and the level of internationalisation of HKUST s MBA Program set it apart from those offered by other leading institutions in the region. This characteristic is reflected in every aspect of the program, including the curriculum, faculty composition, student mix and overall learning experience. HKUST Business School is the only business school in the Asia-Pacific region accredited by both AACSB International and the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), the two most important business school accrediting agencies in the world. The HKUST MBA Program was ranked top in Asia by Financial Times for three consecutive years from 2001 to 2003. More recently, our joint Executive MBA program with Kellogg School of Management was ranked No. 9 in the world by the same publication. Nearly 90 percent of the School s faculty members were recruited from outside of Hong Kong, all are PhD qualified. Moreover, the School has established exchange programs with 45 renowned business schools from 13 countries including CEIBS, Columbia, Duke, HEC, Kellogg, Manchester, Michigan, NYU, Rotterdam, UBC, UCLA, USC and Virginia. Contact details Tel: 2358 8051 Fax: 2705 9596 Email: mscfa@ust.hk URL: www.bm.ust.hk/mscfa How do you choose an MBA programme? Iwas recently asked how our MBA students came to choose an MBA programme. Individuals have different needs, but share the expectation that the programme will take them to higher ground booth professionally and intellectually. About 100 students annually enroll on the MBA in International Management programme offered by the University of London in conjunction with HKU SPACE. They choose it for its world-class academic reputation and unique mode of delivery. The programme is led by the School of Management of Royal Holloway, one of the six largest colleges of the University of London. The advantage of the programme is its unique blend of distance learning and face-to-face teaching by lecturers from London and HKU SPACE. All study modules are supported by 28-30 hours of teaching while a full set of study materials designed for independent learning is also provided. This intellectually challenging programme sharpens conceptual frameworks and managerial skills and is chosen by J P Morgan-Chase-Fleming as its in-house training programme for senior managers. Its curriculum contains eight study modules, a research course and project. The flexible study pace enables students to choose two or three modules per semester and the programme can be completed in a minimum of two years. Our students choose the MBA in International management because it is a world-class degree that is affordable. The entire programme costs GBP 9,000. Why PolyU Accounting Graduates Keep Winning Whatever experts may say about the quality of education in Hong Kong, local graduates continue to excel in the world of business education. One example is the outstanding achievements of two alumni from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University s School of Accounting and Finance who won top honours in the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Professional Scheme examinations. Henry Ngai Wai Tung was named the Gold Medallist of the Top Hong Kong Affiliates by achieving the highest aggregated mark for three ACCA Core Papers. Henry graduated from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2002 with a First Class Honours Degree in Accountancy and is now working as a tax consultant at KPMG. His former classmate, Elaine Wong Yi Ling, also a graduate from the School of Accounting and Finance, was the Hong Kong winner in the ACCA paper on Strategic Business Planning and Development. She too has gained a position with one of the Big Four accounting firms as an associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers. These two high-calibre graduates received their honours recently at the ACCA Hong Kong Top Achievers Presentation Night. Turning out exceptional accounting graduates to meet the demands of Hong Kong business is the primary mission of the School of Accounting and Finance the longest established accounting school in Hong Kong. The School now has over 80 full-time academic staff specialising in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Financial Services and Law with programmes widely recognised locally and overseas. The School s flagship programme, BA (Hons) in Accountancy, is the largest provider of quality accounting graduates in Hong Kong. It provides busy business executives a rare opportunity to pursue a higher qualification through the HKCyberU online learning platform, without the restrictions of time and place. The first seven subjects of the MPAcc have been accredited by the Hong Kong Society of Accountants (HKSA) as a HKSA Conversion Programme. Candidates with substantial professional experience or holders of accounting qualifications deemed to be equivalent to HKSA s (with or without a degree), may apply for a maximum of 18 transfer credits out of the 36 credits required for completion of the programme. In addition to the online interface, students will also have access to the facilities provided by PolyU, promising them both the necessary resources as well as a flexible learning environment. Since its launch in 2000, HKCyberU has been widely accepted by the accounting community. A total of 80 students have graduated with MPAcc or PgDPA awards that are identical to those attained via the traditional on-campus mode. It thus distinguishes itself from other international business courses consisting of a set of units with international labels. Applicants with Accounting Professional Qualifications are eligible for exemptions in one of our MBA degree programs offered by the University of South Australia (UniSA). Our Master s degree programs are designed to: Develop the individual s ability to respond to new managerial challenges, innovatively and creatively, rather than merely master current managerial practice. Address actual managerial problems in the international context. Stimulate holistic and integrative perspectives. Emphasise long-term, pro-active strategic planning for sustainable competitiveness rather than short-term ad-hoc decision making. Develop individual competency in the core cognitive and behavioural skills of situational understanding, leadership and learning, and in inculcating these organisationally. Focus on the application of theories rather than on theories as academic concepts. Through collaboration and partnership with prestigious universities such as University of Hull & University of Wolverhampton (UK), UniSA & La Trobe University (Australia), National University of Ireland (Ireland), and Southern Illinois University, Carbondale (USA), our Institute s aim is to pursue leadership and innovation in management education, research and networking, making APMI a recognised trustmark, and contributing directly to the upgrading and development of management professionals in the Asia region. MBS Worldwide Accelerated MBA In today s business world, the gaining of an MBA is almost viewed as an essential for those progressing up the corporate ladder, and the distance learning MBA for Financial Professionals equips the holder for those advancements. As qualified accountants, our programme recognises the skills that you already hold, and we use those to provide you with an accelerated entry route to the MBA, saving you one fifth of the time normally required to complete the programme. The value of the qualification is also measured, in the marketplace, by the Business school you select to study with. As one of the few to hold all three internationally recognised accreditation awards, AMBA, EQUIS and AASCB, the programme s value is not only seen in the reputation of Manchester Business School, but is recognised by these important external bodies. You will only undertake one MBA, so research your options thoroughly, and select the best programme for your career needs. Contact details: Tel: 2526 4710 Fax: 2526 4910 URL: www.mbs.ac.uk/distancelearning University of Leicester MBA programme Commences January 2004 Britian s University of Leicester offers its MBA study in January 2004. This involves intensive class work and is generally considered more appropriate for students who lack a strong business background or have working schedules which do not require too much out of town travel. Established in 1821, the University of Leicester has a reputation as one of the oldest schools in Britain dedicated to excellence in management education. In 1988, it was accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA), in recognition of its high standards, one of only six British universities accredited by the organisation as a distance learning MBA programme. The Financial Times ranked Leicester among the top 20 universities in the country. The principal objective of the Leicester MBA is to help candidates become competent and capable managers. The programme covers a wide range of management issues and aims to increase a manager s ability to make good strategic decisions. Thus future managers can draw upon this learning to generate a range of options that can be applied to problems arising in any business environment. The new knowledge gained from the MBA will also enable managers to reflect critically upon their own experience. The programme consists of nine modules involving compulsory and elective modules.
