Hutchinson Public Schools 2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR eboard Notes Volume 36, No. 21 June 9, Board approves results policies, interpretations The Hutchinson Public Schools Board of Education Monday (June 9, ) approved district result policies and the accompanying interpretation of those policies. The results policies state why the school district exists, beginning with Results 1, the district s mission statement. The mission is Students will graduate with the knowledge, skills and behaviors to be college and career ready. Results 2 deals with knowledge, stating Students annually gain a minimum of one year s growth in the following core academics: literacy, math, science, social studies. Results 3 through 6, then, focus on skills and behaviors. Results 3: Students analyze, synthesize, generate and evaluate ideas by demonstrating Creativity Problem-solving Critical thinking. Results 4: Students communicate and collaborate by demonstrating Writing, speaking, listening, visual and non-verbal skills Social and cross cultural skills Teamwork. District staff now are in the process of developing measures to accurately reflect the results policies.
Also during Monday s meeting the Board approved a 1.63 percent increase in pay for classified employees after a brief executive session. The increase is similar to one given teachers in the recently approved negotiated agreement between the district and NEA- Hutchinson. Pay for administrators will be set at a meeting later this summer. The Board also approved increasing licensed substitute pay by $3 per day. The Board also approved an interagency agreement with United Way of Reno County. At its May 12 meeting, the Board received a report about a new partnership that will bring new services to students at Avenue A Elementary School. The initiative with United Way of Reno County will create a neighborhood center will be located at Avenue A. The center will provide additional community resources for Avenue A families in the southwest Hutchinson neighborhood. In other action, the Board: Received an update on the district s paperless Board agenda. The district will be implementing BoardDocs this summer, an electronic agenda manager. Board members will train on the system from 6 to 7 p.m. June 16 at the Administration Center. Heard a Continuous Improvement Report from Graber Elementary School. Received an update on the multi-tier system of support and how that has impacted student behavior in the district. Approved resolutions allowing the Board to refinance a portion of its 2006 bond issue. The refinancing will save district taxpayers more than $400,000. Approved minutes of the May 27,, Board meeting. Approved submitted job descriptions. Approved an out-of-state student activity trip to Kansas City, Mo., for International Baccalaureate Programme students. Approved the Young Entrepreneurs Program memorandum of understanding. Approved purchase of computers and supplies for HMS-7. Approved Operational Expectations No. 8, Communicating with the Board. Approved updates to administrative policies on emergency safety interventions, visitors to schools, student absences and truancy. Approved a memorandum of understanding for the Jobs for America s Graduates programs. Approved an interpreting and translation services agreement with Flores Interpreting. Approved the annual Nutrition Services program agreement with Reno County Head Start. Approved the sports medicine agreement with Pinnacle Sports. Approved the Reno County Head Start/Early Head Start interagency agreements with the Early Education Center and Reno County Education Cooperative No. 610. Approved an updated mill levy and debt schedule for the district. Approved the program agreement between Reno County Head Start and Horizons Mental Health Program. Approved the 6B Targeted Improvement Plan for FY 2015. Approved the Treasurer s Report for April. Approved the Accounts Payable Report for May.
Heard a report from Board Member Sarah Blake on the Kansas Association of School Boards Legal Clinic. Gifts to Schools The Board formally accepted the following gifts to schools and thanked donors. Classroom supplies, totaling $1,000, from Office Max to Faris Elementary School teacher Lisa Bohlen for being teacher of the year. Snacks, sunscreen and drinks from Target to Faris for the safety patrol party.
