From Shaun Murphy's Guide To Better Greyhound Punting Insider Secrets & How To Pick More Winners At The Greyhound Track

A Free Guide From Shaun 'The Tipster' Murphy @greyhoundinfo ByShaun'TheTipster'Murphy 1

With only 6 dogs to choose from, you'd think it was easy to pick the winner of a greyhound race wouldn't you? But in tightly graded races and BAGS races, it can be a great deal harder than you think So how do you give yourself a better chance at your punting and pick more winners? Insider Secrets... Here's my quick guide of what to look out for and what you need to be taking into consideration to increase your profits and betting success...

Thinking Like The Grader When you are picking a winner from the 6 dogs - what you are trying to do is actually beat the grader at his own game - that means that you have to put yourself in the mindset of the grader in order to think like the grader It is the grader's job determine the race basically - He has to place the dogs in their appropriate handicap based on how good he thinks it is - and where he thinks the dog is in with a fair chance of winning - But you and I know don't we... That the dogs don't always run to form - and that's why you will find it so difficult to pick a winner. What I mean is that you could run these races on a Monday - and get one result - and run the exact same race on a Wednesday - and get a totally different results - That's why it's important that you also pay attention to a lot of other relevant information - I've listed a great deal of that information here in this guide to help you Enjoy...

Know Your Tracks Pick Three or Four Tracks... And stick to those tracks - Here's Why... If you aren't sticking to the same tracks - you will be less likely to get familiar with the dogs and the trainers, and this is a really important thing to be able to do if you want to increase your betting success. When you follow certain tracks daily - you get to know the dogs well, and more importantly - the trainers habits, you kind of start noticing certain things - and you get to know more about what is going on. Knowing your greyhound tracks and the greyhound trainers is vital to the improvement of your success, let me give you an example... Certain trainers will try all their dogs because they own them - and the fact is that many people don't even realise this! Some trainers are gambling stables - and you end up with a lot of non triers - meaning that the dog is only out for a run - and it's never been put out there to win! So if you are just working with a few tracks on a regular basis, you will become familiar with what is going on and you will start noticing patterns of behaviour; not just in the track itself and how it runs, (more on that later), but in what the grader is like, what trainers operate there and their habits - and of course, the race behaviour of the dogs!! My Advice To You - Pick And Stick!!

Trap Draws This is a great tip when looking for a winner- Looking at the trap draws... As strange as it may sound, certain trainers always try harder when the dog is in the right trap! Okay, so for the next logical question... how do you know if the dog is in the right trap? Check out it's previous runs - I would recommend you look back over the last 8-10 races once a dog becomes a regular runner - Looking back on the form of a dog over this amount of races, you will soon see certain patterns in their form, their trap preferences and of course, you'll start to get to know the dog and it's race habits. Age Of The Dog This is another widely overlooked factor when picking a winner, the age of a dog. Younger dogs obviously are full of improvement - where as the older dogs are in the graders hands! The grader as a handicapper knows them well, so the grader will be a little less fearful when grading the dog, this means that the older dog probably will win in it's turn when given a good chance by the grader. You tend to find that the system plays it like this... The grader is always more wary with a younger dog and tends to grade on the upper side - basically trying to make life a little harder for the younger dog and the grader will usually give it 5 or 6 runs before he really gives it a chance to run. Where as with an older dog - the grader knows the strength of the dog and will place it accordingly. I wouldn't have a preference for an older or younger dog- Just look at what it's up against, it's track and race history, and whether the grader is confident with the dog's grade.

Class And Grade Certain trainers will win with their dog when it gets a drop in grade, so you will find trainers will wait for a drop in grade before they take the brakes off - Sneaky? Maybe - but a widely used practise in greyhound racing Trainers are just sat waiting for a drop in grade and waiting for the right box - when you see this happening to a dog - you will usually see this dog gambled Times Of The Dog When studying form always look at the times of the last 6 runs... The last 6 runs are going to be enough to get a good indication of where the dog is at - and how it's being raced. If you look at the early pace and sectionals on a card, you can tell a fair bit. The sectional is the time of a dog from the traps to the winning line on the first circuit - and when you are reading a race you always want to be paying attention to the sectionals, this gives you a chance to read the race on how they should perform to the first bend against the other dogs Injury Prone Dogs Injury prone dogs tend to run better on heavy going - How do you if it's an injury prone dog? Read back over its last 10 runs... You'll find that injury prone dogs / back from lame dogs run better on a soft track because it is easier on the muscles

Know The Trainer... Each Trainer has their own patterns of systems and racing - and their own way of running a stable. You will find that each trainer's motivations are different, and there a lot of trainers these days undercutting on fees - this means that owners are switching and moving regularly. Training greyhounds has transformed somewhat over the last 10 years - and as money has gotten tighter - tactics have gotten greater, you'll also tend to find that with an emergence of a new type of trainer the old school training methods aren't always used by these trainers - and what I would consider to be a traditional way of training a greyhound isn't even entertained!! I am not dissing anyone here - There are, and will continue to be some great greyhound trainers out there, but I will say is this; I visit a lot of kennels... And there is no way I would allow a kennel to run the way I have seen some running... Many are wasting masses of potential, but I guess that is what happens when an industry opens up to more people, skill levels drop. That being said, if there is a drop in standards in a small fraction of trainers - that also gives you an opportunity to search for those trainers who do leverage their experience and skills and turn out some amazing runners - Greyhound racing is just about having a little bit of insider knowledge, just enough to be dangerous!! I have already mentioned a few tricks of the trade - I really can't mention many more secrets without getting into trouble... You just have to do your homework and be mindful of what you are studying. Watch for patterns as you will find that each trainer will usually have 2 or 3 techniques that he repeatedly plays out on the track - And in the game, these trainers get known for the way the work - so they attract more who want to play that way - hence, they rarely change their habits.

Bitches In Form We all know that when a bitch is in season, it's not allowed to run, but about 17 or 18 weeks after being in season, a bitch generally starts to perform and is always capable of winning 2 or 3 races in a row - this is usually because they are coming back into peak fitness; If you know your dogs, you can usually tell when a bitch is ready to win, as they'll usually show their hand a week before a win. Weather Conditions / Track Bias Certain tracks are just better for the dogs in certain weathers - For example, when you watch closely, certain tracks will run better in the wet, some tracks the water lays on the inside, which means it favours outside runners, etc - watch the tracks that you bet on and build up a pattern of weathers and results. Just a quick tip - In the winter months... when tracks are salted - you will always get a track bias - either to the inside or to the outside Note Fresh Sand - Look out for fresh sand on a track, because whatever side has been freshly sanded - the opposite side will be favoured as the better run as the fresh sand can take a while to settle Obvious Things To Avoid... When you have been betting on the greyhounds for a while, you'll will have no doubt built up your own avoid list, but just 2 really obvious things to avoid are dogs with long losing runs, I would say that you can safely rule these out - And bitches out of form - When bitches go off the boil - they really run sour ( typical woman hey?) - And any good trainer would take them off for a month rather than keep then running
