Rider Education: Rider Education Region K March 2009 Newsletter Produced by Charles Schultz Region K Educator

Larry & Janice Chisholm Region Coordinator Couple of the Year Henry & Jane VanGemert Region Historian Couple of the Year Pierre & Nicole Hunter COY 2008/2009 I apologize for an error in last newsletter; the ICC Trailering Course in July was sponsored by Chapter Q QC (Vaudreuil Dorion) and not Chapter Q ON (Quinte). I will try to be more precise typing up my newsletter so the folks that edit it will not be confused with my intent (editor: oops, sorry about that). Louise and I feel a little guilty this winter for we are not in the north enjoying the Canadian winter. We have been in Florida most of the winter enjoying our new winter home. It has been a cool winter in Florida this year, just as it has been back in Canada. We have visited with many of our GWRRA friends here in Florida over the winter; it is amazing how many are wintering down here or enjoying holidays in this part of the world. We are participating in that great part of GWRRA, Fun and Friends. I have been busy with the Knowledge part with all the new changes that have taken place in Rider Education this winter. Mike Stiger is our new Director of Rider Education. Milt Sorensen has taken over the Canadian operations of Rider Education and is the assistant to the Director of Rider Education. With new leadership comes change and Mike has been busy. Mike has the new Rider Education database up and running, this was a huge undertaking with the large amount of data. At this time Region and District Educators will input the information to keep the database up to date. The new Rider Education Handbook has just been released; we have been waiting for this document for some time. Now the guidelines are in print, this will eliminate some of the confusion we have seen in the past. In all fairness, this is a huge program and much volunteer time is needed when there are major changes to the program. I would like to thank the past Director of RE, Mark Zingery, and his assistants for all the help they gave us last year. Our RE program in Region K has advanced to meet our goals and beyond because of their efforts. Tony Van Schaick will also be missed. Tony has been a positive force all the time I have been in Rider Education. New Rider Course Instructors Mike Stiger and his staff have set up a Rider Course Instructor Certification Program (RCICP) course in New York, four of our Members are going to be certified as Riding Instructors in May. I would like to thank the members taking the ARC Instructors Riding Course Kelly Patten, Richard Martineau from Quebec; Rick McCalla and Paul Haller from Ontario. These instructors will give us a good distribution of instructors in Québec and southern & eastern Ontario. We are working at getting riding instructors certified in the North; this will cut down on the travelling our instructors have to do. We are hoping to get Pat Lavictoire of Chapter ON T certified as a GWRRA Riding Instructor. Riding Courses We have excellent riding instructors. Please use them! Continuous

training of our members helps prevent injuries and death. We participate in a risky sport and training of our members prepares them for when an emergency situation presents itself. Our instructors have been thanked many times by members that survived a close call; our training helped them avoid an incident. Keep those riding skills sharp; I have experienced incidents where my training saved my butt and that special person that rides with me!!! I want to thank the members that have already set up riding courses. When setting up courses some municipalities are asking for $5 million in liability insurance. GWRRA has $2 million; there are municipalities and businesses that will accept the $2 million. All we needed was another hurdle to jump over to set up courses!! The Advanced Rider Course (ARC) (One Up & Two Up) has been changed this year with a new layout allowing for a continual flow of bikes; you will find your wheels will keep turning. Your chapter members will really enjoy the new course layout. We in Rider Ed. have worked hard over the past several years to make these courses available in our Region, so encourage your members to partake in these excellent courses!!!!! We have instructors in the Region that can put on ARC, Trailering and Trike Courses. The New PLP Facilitator Course accepts bikes (one & two up), trikes, 4 wheel bikes and sidecars; we can accept all bikes and bike conversions in this course. Region K has riding courses going on in all three districts this year, this is a first. Manitoba is planning an ARC this summer. We are truly moving ahead in the Region thanks to our Chapter and District Educators. Level IV Applications I would ask the Chapter Educators & District Educators to encourage their members when applying for Level IV, to get a money order made out to GWRRA in US funds. It is too costly to send a personal Canadian bank cheque made out in US funds. This will make my processing much simpler and will speed up the turnaround of certificates. French Translation We are proceeding with translation of Rider Education documents and seminars into French. The members in Québec are doing a great job of these translations. We have, with the help of Michel & Linda D'Arcy, found a way to fast track our translated documents and seminars and GWRRA has accepted this disclaimer. Mike Stiger is putting appropriate translated seminars & documents on the National Rider Education site. This is a large step forward for Region K and the District of Quebec! Let s sharpen up our members riding skills this spring so they are prepared for a safe riding season! Louise and Charlie your Region K Educator

Couple of the Year: It is with great pleasure to announce the return of Larry & Janice Chisholm to the Operation Group as Coordinators of the Couple of the Year program. Larry and Janice will be coordinating and communicating changes to the program and assist Terry & Irene Brinklow at the Rendezvous with the selection process. If you have a Chapter that has selected a Couple for your Chapter for 2009 please be sure the paper work is forwarded to Larry & Janice. I will forward the documents for those chapters that I have received. At this time I want to Thank and Congratulate Ron & especially Lois Litwiller for their contribution and support of the program these past years. Ron & Lois on becoming the Chapter ON E Couple of the Year! Mail Bag: Important please pass this info on. First email Hi Bob I know you are working on your next newsletter so I thought I might give you a suggestion of something to add :-) It appears that this year there have been some changes in the insurance package GWRRA members are being offered. I have summarized it below but I would still suggest you verify it before sending it out. 1) There has been an increase in motorcycle insurance rates charged by the insurance company this year of about 14% (9% across all the lines they cover) 2) There is a new rider (NPCF 091) which covers the replacement of Personal Effects and Riding Clothing up to a maximum of $2500. The insurance policy will no longer cover riding clothing, helmets etc that may be damaged in an accident unless you have this rider. On my policy it was not included by default and will cost approximately $30/year. 3) Some people may have had a waiver of depreciation (NPCF 43) added to their bike insurance. This insured them for the purchase or replacement cost of the motorcycle, without depreciation, in the event of a loss and was applicable for the first three years after purchasing a new bike. This has been replaced by a new waiver (NPCF 094) that can be used for 5 years instead of 3. This was automatically converted on my policy. This waiver applies only to the original motorcycle purchase (including any accessories and taxes) and not on items added after the initial purchase. Note : there is also a waiver (NPCF 096) for pre-owned motorcycles.

4) There is now a vacation protection rider (NPCF 092) which protects the rider for expenses incurred in the event the motorcycle is unfit for operation while on vacation. This was added to my policy automatically at no charge. 5) A policy of many insurance companies is a form of Driving Record Protection. This is now an actually rider in the policy (NPCF 097) and was automatically added to my policy at no charge. Anyone planning on a trip into the US this summer should get their passport applied for if they do not already have one. Regards Rick
