Yara Artwork In May 2014 Yara International ASA moved into their new headquarters in Oslo, Norway. My task has been to embellish six of the seven floors in the building. In all, there are 29 pictures, or 156 square metres of art. Yara wanted pictures that would inspire, challenge, excite and be a source of pride at the new headquarters. It was clearly expressed that the art should reflect and uphold Yara s values of ambition, teamwork, trust and accountability. On four of the floors, each one of these values is a theme. In addition, I have dedicated a floor to Gaia, or Mother Earth. In Greek mythology, Gaia is responsible for all that grows, and the goddess is part of the inspiration for the name Yara. The top floor was set aside for telling the story of, and displaying pictures of, Yara s founders: Sam Eyde, Kristian Birkeland and Marcus Wallenberg. My main theme is Yara s own products: fertilizers and plant nutrients. Pictures of fertilizer prills have been incorporated into most of the artwork. My second theme is the final produce that results from Yara s products: plants and flowers, fruits and vegetables. The human figures are there to symbolise archetypes or embodiments of Gaia rather than concrete people. I have principally used Yara s colours, the colours of life: orange, yellow and green tones. I have also used blue, but have chosen a warmer and more turquoise tone than the blue of Yara s logo. The pictures have a feminine expression throughout. The soft and feminine is enhanced as Yara is a male dominated company, and because the rest of the building has a starker and masculine architectonic expression. I have wanted the art to complement the visual expression of the building. Too many guidelines hamper the free artistic expression. My contacts at Yara have been clear that their personal taste should not direct my art. Yara has been brave and trusted that the result is best when the artist is allowed greater freedom. The result is my personal, artistic interpretation of Yara s values. It has been important to me to steer clear of obvious interpretations. I have wished to create pictures that will grow with time. Pictures in which the beholder will discover new elements over time, which could lead to new insights and broader experiences. My aim has been independent art, with all of Yara s values incorporated. 2 Teamwork Level Teamwork is illustrated by two women mirroring each other. They may be twins, or we can think of teamwork as co-operation within the person. Fertilizer prills floating in space may remind us of the teamwork of the Earth, stars and planets. PAGE 4 TEamwork TEamwork PAGE 5

3Ambition Level A couple is reaching upwards and looking towards the future. They work as a team towards greater accomplishments. In the central piece we can see an oversized fertilizer prill. I think the rest of the prills are aiming to become as powerful as this one. PAGE 12 TEamwork TEamwork PAGE 13

4Accountability Level A female figure is keeping order and has full control over her tasks, as symbolised by apples. The figure also shows care for the apples, like an employee for her responsibilities. The day / night interpretation illustrates Yara s global presence and around-theclock production and activity. 5Gaia Level In Greek mythology, Gaia is the mother of all living beings. She is responsible for all that grows, and partly the inspiration behind Yara s name. Gaia has no age, shape or form. She is present in all places at the same time. In these pictures, every fertilizer prill has its own, personal Gaia to encourage, love and support it. PAGE 28 TEamwork TEamwork PAGE 29

6Trust Level Blue is the colour that most people associate with the word trust. A child s love and trust in her mother is complete and absolute. We also see a young girl showing happiness and trust in the future. PAGE 36 TEamwork TEamwork PAGE 37
