1 Graphic Design Active Layer- When you create multi layers for your images the active layer, or the only one that will be affected by your actions, is the one with a blue background in your layers palette. Background: The part of an artwork that appears to be farthest from the viewer, or in the distance of the scene. Canvas size: The canvas size command adds new pixels to your image, so that you can increase the area of your design. Extra canvas is always created in the current background color. Collage: Collage is an artist s term used to describe the act of combining several different source images together into a new design. Photoshop layers are much used when making collage projects fit together perfectly. Color: Also referred to as hue, color is the appearance of an object created by the quality of light it reflects. The term color also can refer to paint, dye, pigment, or other substance that conveys color. Color scheme: A plan for combining colors in a work of art. Composition: The arrangement of elements of art such as line, shape, and color to create a balanced unified artwork. Contrast: The term contrast refers to the tonal characteristics of a digital image file. In a low contrast image file, there are many shades of grey and little pure black and white. In high contrast there are few greys but there is solid black and white. Copy- To take the selected item and place it to the clipboard for you to paste somewhere else without removing the material from the original document Cursor- A vertical line that appears to the right of the text characters that are typed Delete- to rid of a file on the computer

2 Design: The creative, organized and methodical arrangement of lines, spaces, colors, shapes, textures, and other elements in an artwork. Also, the act of planning and arranging the parts of an artwork. Digital Camera- a type of camera that does not use film and directly uploads images to the computer Dragging- to select something with the mouse, and while holding the muse button down, move the mouse to a different location and let go Edit Menu- holds the commands such as Cut, Copy, Paste and Select All Eraser tool: Erases to the background layer by dragging the mouse. Eyedropper tool: Like the Color Sampler tool, this allows you to match a color exactly by clicking on an area of the image and then offers information about that color. Focal point In graphic design terms, the focal point is where you want to draw the reader s or viewer s eye. This may be large or it may be small. Sometimes graphic designers create a focal point by placing only one tiny object on a page, and in this case the focal point is obvious. Other times the focal point may be within a variety of elements Font- The style or design of writing that you type with Foreground: The part of an artwork that appears to be nearest the viewer, or in the front of the scene. Gradient- A color or special effect that gradually fades from white or transparent to full intensity, like a rainbow Graphic Design: the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books. Grayscale- An image in black and white- NO color

3 Intensity: The brightness or dullness of a color. A color's intensity is highest, or most pure, when it is not mixed with another color. Colors that contain traces of other colors or of neutrals have lower intensity. JPEG: Stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and is sometimes also written JPG Layer: Layers are like transparencies, which are clear plastic sheets of material that can be printed on. The transparencies can be printed and stacked on top of one another to form a complex picture, and single transparencies can be removed from the stack for editing or removal. When you create artwork in Photoshop 7.0, you can create it on layers similar to these transparencies text on one layer, background image on another, and perhaps a selection pasted from another file on another. These layers can then be edited independently of each other, making the editing process more efficient and precise. Line: A mark on a surface, usually created by a pen, pencil, or brush. Lines vary in width, length, direction, color, and degree of curve, and can be two-dimensional or implied. Magic Eraser tool: Lets you erase by clicking with the mouse and erases all pixels similar in color to the area you click on. Marquee tools: These tools allow you to select portions of an object, file, photo, or subject for editing. Also known as the selection tool. Menu Bar- the area at the top of a window that contains a series of pull down menus such as file and edit Merge Layers- In Photoshop- to combine all the layers in an image to a single layer Middle ground: The part of an artwork that appears to lie between objects in the foreground and objects in the background. Move tool: Allows you to move a selected part of an image, align

4 layers, and distribute layers in an image. When the Move tool is selected, a box is placed around the selected part of the image. This box can be used to move the selection and edit its shape and size Opacity: Used to specify how transparent a layer should be, either on its own or in regard to other layers. Opaque: Not transparent Overlap: To partly or completely cover one shape or form with another. Can be used to show distance in an artwork. Paste: This command pastes the selection (from Cut or Copy) onto a layer Pixel: Images such as photos are made up of pixels, which are small squares that contain color. An image s resolution is determined by how many pixels there are in the image per inch. Photoshop Program used by many graphic designers and photographers to create or edit photographs and images. Portrait- a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders. PSD file format: Photoshop s own format for saving files. Files saved in this format retain layer information so they can be edited at any time. Raster Image: an image made up of thousands of pixels, which determine the color and form of the image. Photographs are raster images. Photoshop is the most common raster editor, enabling you to manipulate the color and other properties of the pixels. But, because raster images are made up of a finite amount of pixels, resizing can be tricky. If you make a raster image larger dimensions in Photoshop, the software has to make up data in order to add the size. This results in loss of quality. Resolution The size and amount of detail in an image. Number of dots per inch, or dpi, in an image. Images for the web are usually be around 72 dpi, or a low resolution, while images for print should

5 be around 300 dpi, or a higher resolution. Save As- To store data to a disk with a new or different name other than before Scale: A Transform tool that allows you to enlarge or reduce an image s size horizontally, vertically, or both. Selecting- The action of picking an icon or program on the screen Shape: A two-dimensional figure created by connecting actual or implied lines that enclose an area of space. A shape can be geometric (such as a circle or square) or organic (having an irregular outline). Space: The open or empty area round, above, between, within, or below objects. Shapes and forms are defined by the empty space surrounding them (negative space) and by the space they occupy (positive space). Stop Motion Animation: technique that physically manipulates an object that appears to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Texture: The way a surface feels (actual texture) or looks (visual texture). Words such as rough, smooth, shiny, and dull are used to describe texture. Typography- the art of arranging type which includes letters, numbers and symbols, so that it is pleasing to the eye. This includes not only the font that is used but how it is arranged on the page: letter by letter, size, line spacing, etc. Value: The lightness or darkness of a color. For example, pink is a light value of red, while navy is a dark value of blue
