(0651) 4608965 Trier s great landmark, the Porta Nigra (Black Gate) was built of sandstone blocks. It is the best preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps. From the 11 th to the 18 th century, it served as the double Church of St. Simeon; only its Romanesque apse has been preserved. Imperial Baths Im Palastgarten, tel. (0651) 4362550 Only the walls of the warm bath and the extensive underground service tunnels with furnaces have been preserved from the Roman bathing facility from the 4 th century, initially with warm and cold baths and sports ground Amphitheater Olewiger Strasse, tel. (0651) 73010 Built around AD 100 for games with gladiators and animals, the arena had a seating capacity of about 20,000. Below the arena is a large cellar open to the public. Barbara Baths Südallee/Friedrich-Wilhelm-Strasse Foundations, cellar service tunnels, and hollow-floor heating system (hypocaust) have survived from the fourth largest bath in the Roman Empire (2 nd century AD). The Barbara Baths are closed until further notice. Roman Bridge The Trier Roman Bridge across the Moselle is the oldest Roman bridge north of the Alps. The first construction occurred together with the founding of the city in 16 BC, the second bridge in the period around AD 71. Free access. 17

Worth Seeing! UNESCO World Heritage Imperial Throne Room (Constantine Basilika) 18 Imperial Throne Room: Constantine Basilika / Protestant Church of the Redeemer www.konstantin-basilika.de, tel. (0651) 42570 The palace audience hall ( Aula Palatina ), built by Emperor Constantine about AD 310, served in the Roman era as imperial throne room. In the Middle Ages, it was converted to a castle and later served as a wing of the Electoral Palace. In 1856, the Prussian King Frederick William IV restored the structure as a Protestant church. Open: In 2014, the Constantine Basilika will be open only part time because of the construction of a new organ. Notices will give detailed information. Admission free. Tours: on request. UNESCO World Heritage Important Structures Museums & Exhibitions Inhalt UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral (Dom) Information: Dom-Information Trier [i2] (p. 61) The oldest Bishop s church north of the Alps evolved from a house church from Late Antiquity which was expanded in the 4th century to a monumental church complex. Following heavy damage (5th and 9th centuries), the intact Roman central section was repeatedly expanded (west and east choirs and cloister and Holy Robe Chapel). With its three crypts, cloisters, Cathedral Treasury, and Holy Robe Chapel, the Cathedral today exhibits architecture and art from over 1700 years. The Cathedral is also an important place of pilgrimage. As the goal of large numbers of pilgrims, the most precious relic the Holy Robe, the tunic of Christ was last on view in 2012. Open: April to October: daily 6:30 a.m. 6 p.m.; November to March: daily 6.30 a.m. 5:30 p.m. Admission free. No sightseeing possible during church services or concerts. (0651) 9941057 Under a glass superstructure by Oswald M. Ungers are the massive foundations of a Roman bath, medieval waste pits and cellar rooms of the baroque Capuchin monastery. Open: Closed on the first workday of the week, otherwise open daily 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Franco s Tower Dietrichstrasse 6 (70 yds/m from the Main Market) New in the list of accessible Trier sights is Franco s Tower, a residential tower from the 11 th century. It can now be viewed during a group tour (by prior appointment). St. Paulin s Church Balthasar-Neumann-Strasse/Thebäerstrasse A baroque jewel in the Rhineland, built from 1734 1757 according to plans by Balthasar Neumann, wooden statues on high altar by Ferdinand Tietz, ceiling paintings by Christoph Thomas Scheffler. The restored organ is from 1756. Open: Mondays, Wednesdays to Saturdays 9 a.m. 5 p.m., Tuesdays 11 a.m. 5 p.m., Sundays 10 a.m. 7:30 p.m. Abbey Church of St. Matthias Matthiasstrasse Romanesque abbey and parish church from the 10 th and 12 th centuries with the grave of the Apostle Matthias (only Apostle s grave north of the Alps). Open: daily 8 a.m. 7 p.m. No sightseeing possible on Sunday mornings because of church service. On prior appointment, small groups may visit the Early Christian subterranean burial chambers under the St. Matthias cemetery. 21

With several hundred graves and stone sarcophagi of early Trier Christians and bishops, the only cemetery from Late Antiquity north of the Alps is located under the former Imperial Abbey St. Maximin s. Tours: For individual guests from April 4 to October 3, 2014, every 1 st Friday of the month at 5 p.m. and on April 18, May 30, June 20, and December 5, 2014. Church of the Theological Seminary (Jesuit Church) and Friedrich Spee Crypt Jesuitenstrasse Gothic hall church from the 13 th century with baroque elements. The inner courtyard leads to the Spee Crypt with the remains of Friedrich Spee, the famous poet and crusader against the witch hysteria, who died here in 1635. Open: daily 8:30 a.m. 5 p.m. (Jesuit Church). The key to the Spee Crypt is available at the portal of the Seminary. Franco s Tower just the right place for your next event! UNESCO World Heritage Important Structures Museums & Exhibitions Inhalt l l Important Structures Electoral Palace (Kurfürstliches Palais) Im Palastgarten (next to the Roman Throne Room/Basilika) The rococo palace was erected between 1756 and 1761 according to plans by J. Seiz as the south wing of the 17 th -century Electoral Palace. Copies of baroque statues of ancient gods stand in the Palace Garden, bordered by remains of the medieval city wall. On exhibit here are art and cultural treasures from the Middle Ages up into the 21 st century, the basic stock of which arose from significant donations by well-known Trier citizens.
