UNESCO World Heritage Important Structures Museums & Exhibitions Inhalt UNESCO World Heritage Porta Nigra Porta-Nigra-Platz, tel. (0651) 4608965 Trier s great landmark, the Porta Nigra (Black Gate) was built of sandstone blocks. It is the best preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps. From the 11 th to the 18 th century, it served as the double Church of St. Simeon; only its Romanesque apse has been preserved. Imperial Baths Im Palastgarten, tel. (0651) 4362550 Only the walls of the warm bath and the extensive underground service tunnels with furnaces have been preserved from the Roman bathing facility from the 4 th century, initially with warm and cold baths and sports ground Amphitheater Olewiger Strasse, tel. (0651) 73010 Built around AD 100 for games with gladiators and animals, the arena had a seating capacity of about 20,000. Below the arena is a large cellar open to the public. Barbara Baths Südallee/Friedrich-Wilhelm-Strasse Foundations, cellar service tunnels, and hollow-floor heating system (hypocaust) have survived from the fourth largest bath in the Roman Empire (2 nd century AD). The Barbara Baths are closed until further notice. Roman Bridge The Trier Roman Bridge across the Moselle is the oldest Roman bridge north of the Alps. The first construction occurred together with the founding of the city in 16 BC, the second bridge in the period around AD 71. Free access. 17

Worth Seeing! UNESCO World Heritage Imperial Throne Room (Constantine Basilika) 18 Imperial Throne Room: Constantine Basilika / Protestant Church of the Redeemer www.konstantin-basilika.de, tel. (0651) 42570 The palace audience hall ( Aula Palatina ), built by Emperor Constantine about AD 310, served in the Roman era as imperial throne room. In the Middle Ages, it was converted to a castle and later served as a wing of the Electoral Palace. In 1856, the Prussian King Frederick William IV restored the structure as a Protestant church. Open: In 2014, the Constantine Basilika will be open only part time because of the construction of a new organ. Notices will give detailed information. Admission free. Tours: on request. UNESCO World Heritage Important Structures Museums & Exhibitions Inhalt UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral (Dom) Information: Dom-Information Trier [i2] (p. 61) The oldest Bishop s church north of the Alps evolved from a house church from Late Antiquity which was expanded in the 4th century to a monumental church complex. Following heavy damage (5th and 9th centuries), the intact Roman central section was repeatedly expanded (west and east choirs and cloister and Holy Robe Chapel). With its three crypts, cloisters, Cathedral Treasury, and Holy Robe Chapel, the Cathedral today exhibits architecture and art from over 1700 years. The Cathedral is also an important place of pilgrimage. As the goal of large numbers of pilgrims, the most precious relic the Holy Robe, the tunic of Christ was last on view in 2012.
