Location Rail Systems İstanbul Railway Bosphorus Tube Tunnel Crossing İstanbul / Türkiye Contract Date 2001 Completion Date 2009 In terms of Design, Construction and Management methods, this is one of the biggest projects in the world. The population growth of İstanbul and the resulting aggravating traffic problem have urged a necessity for the improvement of the rail transit systems. As a result of the Urban Transport Survey in 1988, a decision was made to implement a rail transit system to capitalize the significant passenger potential, using the railway corridor already existing in the East-West direction. The project aims at: improving the existing double-track railway system between Gebze-Haydarpaşa and Sirkeci - Halkalı to a modern and higher technological standard, and joining both sides of İstanbul with the joining of the rail lines on both sides of the Bosphorus with a tunnel, crossing underneath, to provide an uninterrupted, advanced rapid rail transit system. These improvements are expected to ease the traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and thus
