Extended Opportunities These are all double options involving a day of out of school study every week Every year we are able to offer a limited number of places for interested pupils to study extended opportunities courses. This year we have identified a cohort of students who we feel would be best suited to the courses contained in this section. Any extended Opportunities course will demand a great deal from students: they will miss a day in school and have to travel independently across the city, work with students from different schools in an initially unfamiliar environment and be expected to cope with the challenges of a whole new way of learning. We have identified your child because we feel them to be sufficiently motivated, resilient and mature to cope with the demands. The benefits of pursuing one of the courses listed in this section are clear for all to see; excellent preparation for the world of work; a practical course to suit their preferred style of learning and the opportunity to secure nationally recognised qualifications. All pupils considering applying for an Extended Opportunities Course must recognise that they are likely to study fewer option subjects in school. Parents should also understand that they may need to make a voluntary contribution to transport costs and necessary Health and Safety equipment such as tunics, overalls, appropriate footwear, etc. Pupils who are successful will not have any catch up time in school. Because this is a double option, students will also have 5 identified periods a week in school to complete extra vocational qualifications. All pupils applying for Extended Opportunities should be aware that they are likely to complete a BTEC Work Skills course alongside other, comparable level 2 qualifications in school.
