Northwest Career and Technical Academy Course Expectations 2014/2015 Human Development and Learning Mrs. Robinson shauna_robinson@interact.ccsd.net Course Description Course Goals This one-year course is designed to provide students with an understanding of patterns in human development from birth to adulthood. Stages of growth are studied as a basis for providing appropriate learning activities commensurate with developmental ability. Theories of human development are taught through experiential methods and utilized in planning, observing, and directing students activities. In early childhood, elementary, middle, and/or high school settings, students complete actual classroom observations and teaching activities. The use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation. 1. To identify child development theories, trends, and terminology. [NS: EC 1.1, 2.1, 2.2] 2. To comprehend how each stage of life builds upon the previous stages and prepares children for future development. [NS: EC 2.1] 6. To examine the interplay between creative expression and cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development. [NS: EC 3.4, 3.5] 7. To create a personal philosophy about education by identifying theories of human development. [NS: EC.3.2] 8. To describe the barriers that hinder successful learning and to motivate students to cope with and overcome the obstacles. [NS: EC 3.2, 3.4] 9. To create age-appropriate lesson plans and evaluate their effectiveness and incorporate current technology. [NS: EC 5.1; CT 2.0] 10. Textbook(s) 12. To participate in actual classroom observations and/or teaching at the early childhood, elementary, middle school, and/or high school levels. [NS: EC 2.5, 3.1] The Developing Child by Brisbane will be the primary text for this course. If lost, the student will be responsible for a $50.00 replacement fee. Content is related to the theories related to Early Childhood and approved by CCSD. Technology Applications Laptops or School Computer lab facilities are used throughout the program content. Students must come prepared to use their own sign on passwords and will be responsible to drop work into a teacher assigned drop box when specified. Students will be asked to provide work typewritten and must access a home or school computer for these assignments. Students will often work in groups to complete work but all must maintain a copy of work to turn in to teacher. A flash drive will be required to store material produced in 2

class because once logged out of the laptops, the information is sometimes irretrievable. Class copies may only be made on a teacher copy machine or printer in advance and NOT on the day it is due. Work is always due at the beginning of the class. A laptop number will be assigned to each student who works on a laptop in class. Students must use the laptop assigned each day. Grading Policy - Grading Scale Letter grades will be determined on the following scale: A 90% - 100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F below 60% Grading Procedures 1. Students with unexcused tardiness will miss opening of class graded activities. Students who are tardy more than twice or come more than 10 minutes late may be assigned to do individual projects rather than the privilege to work as a group on projects. Other students will not be punished for personal tardiness or lack of effort on work due to attendance. 2. The value of assignments will be 90% of their final grade. 3. Notebooks- may be checked for completion at various intervals throughout the year. (spot check) 4. Homework may be assigned at any time and will be due on the date posted. 5. Spelling, grammar and neatness will be considered and points will be lost for sloppy or unedited work. 6. Participation points may be given for work completed on group projects. Spot checks can be done at any time for credit. Individual and Group points will be given. Group members will grade each other for work content completed on group projects so an individual must be accountable to the group as well as the teacher for work completion on projects. Group member graded points per project constitute 100 points of the total grade. 7. Extra credit may be given for any assignment or duty that enhances learning or academics in the classroom. Dressing professionally on Presentation days will also be given extra credit. (optional) 8. Grades will be posted on Infinite Campus once a week for viewing at home. Please e-mail me with any concerns. 9. Papers turned in will be neat and free from ripped edges. Most work will be in typed format or dropped in a teacher s drop-box. Students should keep all materials from class in a notebook / binder including graded work. Store all returned graded work as proof of completion in the event of a dispute. 3

Basis for Semester Grades Semester grades will be calculated as follows: 1 st Q 40% 2 nd Q 40% Semester Exam 20% Make-Up Work After any absence, the student is required to initiate contact with instructor to obtain appropriate make up work within three (3) school days directly following the student s return. Any previously assigned and due assignments before the absence are due next class period. (This means that the day a student return to school not the next class period on block schedule. Overdue papers should be taken to teacher the morning of the day student returned to school if on opposite day than class is held.) If a student misses a presentation a parent or student notification by email or call should be made the day of the absence or loss of all or partial credit can result. To be a part of a team one must commit time and participation to the whole of the group. If a student is chronically absent or tardy, the student will be required to do his/her own project so others may not be penalized for the student s absence/s. Individual work in this case will be accepted if complete and on time. If a student exceeds more than seven unexcused absences, he/she will receive no credit for that semester. Please see teacher for extenuating circumstances. Late Work Policy Late work is not allowed at NWCTA unless authorized by the excused absence rule. This only applies to work assigned on the day the work is absent. All other previously assigned work must come in on the DAY student returns to school. No other late work will be accepted. Extenuating circumstances will be handled on a case by case basis. Basis for Citizenship Grade Students must not exhibit behavior that interferes with the teaching/learning process. O Outstanding: student attends class without unexcused absences or tardies, submits work on time, is always respectful, cooperative, and non-disruptive of the teaching/learning process and follows all class/school rules. This student is a positive classroom participant. S Satisfactory: student attends class with two (or less) unexcused absences or tardies, submits work on time, is always respectful, cooperative, and non-disruptive of the teaching/learning process and follows all class/school rules. N Needs Improvement: student has 3-5 unexcused absences or three unexcused tardies, some of the work is missing or late, needs occasional reminders to be respectful, cooperative, and/or non-disruptive of the teaching/learning process, and needs occasional reminders of class/school rules. U Unsatisfactory: student has 5 or more unexcused absences or four or more unexcused tardies, the 4

work is often missing or submitted late, student needs frequent reminders to be respectful, cooperative, and/or non-disruptive of the teaching/learning process, and needs frequent reminders of class/school rules. Student engages in academic dishonesty. Students who do not follow the Early Childhood Policies here at NWCTA in regards to kindergarten work, ethics in the kindergarten, or adhering to procedures found on the Early Childhood/Teacher Ed Policies may receive a U in Citizenship. A U can also result if one has received a referral or repeated referrals, using inappropriate language, or constantly reprimanded or warned. Class Rules: 1. Food/Drink/Gum/Candy is NOT permissible. Water is acceptable. 2. The classroom is to be considered a place for learning. The environment will be kept clean, orderly, and free from inappropriate language. 3. Attendance and tardiness policies will reflect those of NWCTA. "A student enrolled in grades six through twelve in a secondary school who is not physically present in the classroom at the start of the instructional period but reports to the classroom after that time, is to be marked tardy." 4. Bathroom or emergency passes will be given upon request but must not be excessive and will not be given at the beginning or end of class. Students must sign out at the door and have been given permission by the teacher. 5. All students will stay in their seats until the bell or until teacher excuses him/her to exit the room. 6. Seating will be assigned by the teacher and changed at any time. All students should sit in assigned seat each day and be respectful to maintain his/her own environment. 7. Electronic devices, make-up, food and drinks and illegal substances including prescription medication will be confiscated and turned in to the deans office. Illegal substances will result in an automatic dean referral. 8. NWCTA Hall Passes must be properly issued to leave the classroom. No passes to cars will be issued. 9. - All students involved in copying, plagiarizing, or cheating of any kind including lying, cheating or any circumstances surrounding it will receive a zero on the assignment and a U in citizenship. In addition, students Academic Integrity may face additional consequences based on the severity of the incident. Please see attached academic honor code for further clarification. 10. Classroom copy machine/s will only be used when teacher directs a student to do so. A student may not use copy machine for work from other classes or come to classroom other periods of the day and ask to use it. It will only be used for in-class assignments when directed by the teacher. Paper usage is limited and very costly. Teacher will assign you the usage limits per project. Classroom Progressive Discipline: Certain actions including insubordination, violence, and harassment will warrant immediate referral to the dean. Students who choose not to follow the classroom and school rules listed above will face the following consequences: First Offense Verbal warning Second Offense Parent Contact Third Offense Counselor Referral 5

Fourth Offense Dean s Referral Office Hours I will almost always be available before and after school for make-up work and questions. Generally, my hours will be 6:50 am 2:00 pm in room 514. Special appointments may be scheduled on an individual basis. It is always best to talk to me before scheduling an appointment with parents to try to resolve problems when necessary. I am a fair teacher and will consider all requests. Unique Items Pertinent To Your Class: 1. Fee $15.00 2. Flash Drive 3. A student may spend time in our Kindergarten facility if directed by the teacher and will adhere to all school rules and dress at that time. 4. Early Childhood Club or outside of class activities as scheduled and approved by NWCTA 5. All class craft items are allowed for students use as long as items are replaced at the end of class and kept neat, clean, and minimal supplies are used per student. Supplies are not just school purchased supplies and property but are for use by each student. Everyone must take care of the supplies and equipment so everyone can benefit. 6. Some projects may require supplies like markers, glue, stickers etc. Some will be supplied by the teacher but home supplies may be needed for homework on specific projects and is recommended. Advanced notice will be given and ample time to complete. 7. Optional Program shirt or Program Sweaters can be ordered at various times and worn for spirit days or other program activities. NORTHWEST CAREER AND TECHNICAL ACADEMY ACADEMIC HONOR CODE Students are expected to demonstrate honesty and integrity while in attendance at the Northwest Career and Technical Academy. Each student is expected to do his or her own work, including homework, test-taking, class and computer lab assignments, and the creation of essays, compositions, term papers, computer presentations and scientific research. There is no distinction between giving or receiving unauthorized help; one who helps another to cheat is as guilty as one who benefits from cheating. The following actions are considered cheating: 1. Claiming credit for work that is not the product of one s own honest effort. 2. Providing unwarranted access to materials or information so that credit may be dishonestly claimed by oneself or others. 3. Submitting work to more than one teacher for course credit without prior approval. 4. Forging or falsifying of any school records or forms. 5. Knowledge of and toleration of any of the foregoing. 6. Any behavior which can be defined as cheating represents a violation of mutual trust and respect essential to education at the Northwest Career and technical Academy. Students who cheat should expect to be confronted by their teacher, staff member, or administrator observing this behavior and be subject to one or more of the following consequences: 6

1. Zero/no credit on the assignment. 2. Notification of parents/guardian. 3. Documentation on Discipline Record. 4. Required Parent Conference 5. Signing of a behavior contract to be placed in the student discipline record. 6. Honor Code Probation. 7. Exclusion from school activities such as dances, activities, athletics, field trips, and graduation 8. Loss of college recommendation letters. All students who have computer access should be aware of the Acceptable Use Policy for computer usage and follow it. 7
