A Publication of the Industrial Organizational Psychology Program Department of Psychology Auburn University Auburn, AL 36849 Meet our New Students Q & A with Dr. Chen Q & A with Dr. Franco-Watkins Inside this Issue: Tiger Prints, Talks, s Professional Accomplishments Alumni Spotlight Auburn at SIOP 2015 Experiencing Philadelphia

Page 2 Meet the new students Paige Hartman I am originally from Houston, Texas, and received my B. A. in psychology from The University of Texas at Austin in December 2013. At The University of Texas at Austin, I focused mainly on child development research within psychology and linguistics examining imitation, learning, and language acquisition in cross-cultural settings. I am now a From Left: Paige Hartman, Melissa Stuhlman and Drew Bond first year Ph.D. student here at Auburn University under the direction of Dr. Jesse Michel. My current research interests include scale development, work and family life balance, and the antecedents to work and family life conflict and facilitation. I am additionally interested in individual differences and personality as they relate to the work-nonwork relationship and coping with stressors. Melissa Stuhlman I graduated from Texas A&M (Whoop!) in 2013, and then spent a year working as a Human Resources Team Leader for a large retail company. Although I will always be an Aggie, I have come to love my Auburn Tigers (War Eagle!). My research interests in Dr. Fan s lab include newcomer orientation, socialization, and attachment in the workplace. Drew Bond I graduated from Western Michigan University back in 2007 and have been enjoying service in the Army since then. My experience here at Auburn will prepare me for a teaching rotation at the Army s Military Academy (West Point) that will begin in the fall of 2016 where I will teach Psychology for Leaders. My research interests in Dr. Svyantek s lab include leader selection and development, emotional intelligence, ethical decision making, and (thanks to a seminar with Dr. Fan) implications of Attachment Theory in the workplace. My family and I love the Auburn area, and look forward to a long-term connection with the plains.

Page 3 Q & A with Dr. Peter Chen Where is your hometown? I was born in Taiwan, and have lived in Taiwan, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Mass, Colorado, and Adelaide in Australia. How did you first become interested in I/O psychology? As a second lieutenant in the Army headquarters, I was working on morale, interpersonal conflict, work and life balance, leadership, suicide, aggression, etc. After that, I worked in trading and manufacturing companies as a manger who dealt with human resources issues. What are you most excited about as a new Auburn faculty member? The most exciting thing is to have the opportunity to work with talented faculty, staff, and students. What are your academic research interests? My research focuses on change and sustainability in the areas of occupational safety and health management. Are there any courses you are particularly excited to teach at some point? Change. What are some of your upcoming goals (academic, professional, or personal)? Academic: Maintain and advance visibility and reputation of Journal of Occupational Health Psychology as the incoming Editor. Professional: Strategic hiring, proactive career development and retention, capitalize and manage resources to augment research environment, continue building and strengthening the reputation and visibility of the department. Personal: Learn to be grateful, and to have no desire. What are some of your extracurricular hobbies/activities? Exercising. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you? I love to see our graduate students acquire the best research skills for whatever jobs they plan to pursue.

Page 4 Q & A with Dr. Ana Franco-Watkins How did you first become interested in I/O psychology? Unbeknownst to me at the time, one of my first glimpses of my interest in I/O psychology was as an undergraduate student when I took a Tests and Measurement class, and became interested in how different tests could predict performance. As a faculty member at Auburn, I had the opportunity to work with I/O psychologists and became interested in the field because I could see the overlap between my educational experiences and how it relates to I/O psychology. What are you most excited about as a new member in the I/O program? I am thrilled to be part of the I/O program. There are several things that I find exciting: having great colleagues and collaborators, the opportunity to work with talented students, and the ability to conduct research both in the lab and field to address important questions. What are your academic research interests? My research interests are in decision making (broadly defined), performance and cognitive abilities, and gender and organizations. Most of my research centers on understanding how people make decisions in everyday situations as well as under stress. A new avenue that I am currently pursuing is ethical decision making in the workplace. What are some of your upcoming goals (academic or personal)? There are too many to list! One of my goals is to do whatever I can to continue to make I/O psychology at Auburn University a strong and successful program. Another goal is to get involved in I/O field work and build connections with industry and the community. Is there anything else you would like us to know about you? I like structure and organization so if it does not exist, I look for ways to create it in my environment. I am always looking for opportunities to make my work and personal life better. I am Portuguese (born on the island of Terceira in the Azores and grew up in a Portuguese community in Toronto, Canada), so that means I have a passion for food and wine!

Page 10 Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Brien Smith Dr. Brien Smith is currently serving as Dean of the Scott College of Business at Indiana State University. What do you enjoy most about what you do? Establishing a vision and working with others to achieve it. Leadership is motivating others to go to a place that they have never been. This achievement is rewarding for everyone and is a big motivator for me. How would you describe your transition from school to the real world? Moving into the real world, or a new job for that matter, can be intimidating, especially when our expectations are unrealistically challenging. I have learned to let the job come to me rather than getting nervous about whether I will succeed. I always fall back on the knowledge that I was well prepared in graduate school and that I have the tools to be successful in any endeavor I apply myself. What was your favorite memory about Auburn s I/O program? The great friendships that formed from a common experience. We were all challenged in graduate school. Cohort groups learned to laugh, cry, study, and party together. It is the only way to make it really. How has your Auburn connection impacted you? The graduate experience set the tone for work for the rest of my career. I have pulled less from my Auburn connections (in a networking sense) than I have been inspired by those with whom I connected. It s hard to underestimate the talent to which you are exposed, even if you don t realize it at the time. What do you wish you had known before graduating from Auburn? That my training in psychology could be extended to anything I did. Motivation, communication, negotiation, attribution, organizational behavior, personality, and many other areas make a huge difference personally if you are willing to apply it. Do you have any words of wisdom for current Auburn I/O students? You have a world of opportunity open to you. If you work hard there are few boundaries to what you can do. Save your very best to serve others and take time to be good to yourself.

Page 11 Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Julia Howell Tell us a little about yourself. Where do you currently work/live? What do you like about your current location? I currently work at Johnson & Johnson (J&J) headquarters in New Brunswick, NJ, and live about 25 miles northeast in Lebanon, NJ. The town I live in is so beautiful and not at all what I expected of New Jersey! There are rolling hills, hiking trails, lakes, and gorgeous old colonial-style houses. One of my personal favorite things about NJ is the fresh produce that's available year-round, like blueberries in the summer and apples and squash in the fall. I m originally from the south, not the northeast. I was born in Louisiana, but moved to Vestavia Hills, Alabama when I was 9. For undergrad, I went to Rhodes College in Memphis, TN and received my BA degree in Neuroscience. After I graduated from Rhodes, I traveled in Ireland, England, and France. I also wanted to gain some work experience before going back to school, so I spent 2 years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) working in the genetics lab. In Fall 2007, I started my PhD program in I/O Psychology at Auburn, and completed my degree by Summer 2014. Will you describe what you are currently doing in the field of I/O? I am a part of the Organizational Analytics team at J&J. The main goal of our team is to conduct studies that enable leaders to make evidence-based workforce decisions. This can take many forms, but typical outcomes of interest include promotion, turnover, and performance. A few examples of my work responsibilities include composing SAS code to perform regression analyses and build models, crafting structured interview guides, and designing surveys for assessment projects. I'm very excited about the project I'm currently leading, which is a network analysis that will examine how people communicate within the organization with the goal of improving collaboration and creating new opportunities for innovation. How would you describe your transition from school to the real world? Can you pinpoint anything that you think made this transition easier? That s a great question! Having internships with Disney, the Army Research Institute, and Aon Hewitt definitely helped make the transition from grad school to work easier. Also, taking opportunities to talk with more experienced I/O psychologists, including Auburn alumni and individuals I met through conferences like SIOP who had work experience gave me get a clearer picture of the type of work I would eventually be doing in a full-time position. What was your favorite thing about Auburn s I/O program? What skills did you acquire at Auburn that you think have been critical/ helpful in your current position? The non-competitive, collaborative atmosphere of Auburn s I/O program is one of its greatest strengths. It was great because the collaborative culture gave me the opportunity to work on projects in different labs and increased my exposure to different areas of I/O psychology such as work-family balance. Some skills that I developed at Auburn that have been the most helpful on the job include teamwork, critical thinking, and advanced statistical analyses. Do you have any advice to offer incoming and/or current I/O students? Network as early and as often as you can within the I/O community (and beyond). Ask questions and do not be afraid to make mistakes in the pursuit of knowledge. If you are interested in an applied career in I/O, it s very important to (a) make sure to stay on schedule with thesis, comps, and dissertation, and (b) try to get at least one internship or consulting job to gain valuable work experience. I also found it very important during grad school to put aside time for myself each week to decompress and relax. Spending time with my family and friends, travelling, and reading novels were all great ways for me to re-energize and stay focused on my goals.
