Phase I - large group session on the principles of health care ethics. Phase 2 - small group discussion of paradigm cases involving issues of medical ethics/ professionalism at the GME level. Phase 3 - team clinical simulations that challenge medical professionalism, ethical decision making or cultural competency. Internal Medicine Simulation Curriculum December 2005 - May 2008 Purpose: Development and implementation of an integrated curriculum using high fidelity simulators and standardized patients to teach clinical ethics, professionalism, and cultural awareness in UGME and GME. Curriculum development role: 1 identification of appropriate learning objectives based on level of medical learner; and 2 primary authorship of standardized patient and high fidelity simulation scenarios and evaluation checklists. Contemporary Issues in Medical Student Professionalism for Years III and IV June 2005 - May 2008 Purpose: Year III and IV students participate in informal dinner discussions of issues and dilemmas they are experiencing as they go through their 3rd and 4th years of medical training. Contemporary Issues in Medical Student Professionalism Year II Elective August 2004 - May 2007 Purpose: Expose Year II students to issues that face all medical professionals in a manner relevant and appropriate to their stage of medical training. Medical Professionalism in the Clinical Environment July 2003 - May 2008 Purpose: Year III students during the Internal Medicine clerkship engage two one-hour interactive discussion sessions. Hour 1 includes how a profession is distinct from a job and challenges to the doctor-patient relationship. Hour 2 focuses on required elements that determine capacity for medical decision making and criteria for surrogate decision-making. Students are also invited to confidentially discuss any situations they have experienced as challenges to their professionalism since starting medical school.
