1 University of Illinois at Chicago Emergency Medicine Medical Education and Simulation Fellowship Overview The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Emergency Medicine Medical Education and Simulation Fellowship is designed for Emergency Medicine (EM) physicians interested in pursuing a career in academic emergency medicine. The Fellowship develops EM educational leaders and scholars by combining a Masters in Health Professions Education (MHPE) program with the application of theory into practice utilizing the UIC EM residency program and training in simulation based medical education at the UIC Graham Clinical Performance Center (GCPC) Duration The Fellowship is two years in length. Fellowship Application Process: Acceptance into the MHPE program is a requirement of the Fellowship. Candidates must submit the MHPE Personal Statement Form, Curriculum Vitae (CV), and three letters of recommendation on the MHPE application website by September 25th, Information about the MHPE and MHPE admissions process can be found at programs/departments/meded/educationa l_programs/mhpe/ Applicants who meet MHPE acceptance criteria will be invited for an interview to take place early October Program Components: Masters of Health Professions Education o Attend core and elective MHPE courses on site and/or on line o Develop Masters thesis Simulation Leadership Training o Year 1: Develop and implement simulation based education programs for medical students and residents at the GCPC, utilizing standardized patients, mannequins and task trainers; attend GCPC faculty development courses and workshops. o Year 2: Develop leadership skills by participating in the management and administration of the GCPC; Co- teach faculty development courses and programs; continue conducting SBE programs. o Attend the annual meetings of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and the Chicago Simulation Consortium

2 EM Educational Leadership Training o Develop and teach monthly EM residency didactics and curricula o Attend and participate in EM residency program educational leadership meetings including the Program Evaluation Committee, Clinical Competency Committee, and Joint Conference Committee o Perform EM clinical duties while conducting bedside teaching for medical students and residents o Participate in the planning and implementation of EM faculty development educational sessions o Attend the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Teaching o Fellowship Participate in the UIC EM Academic Development and Professionalism Collaborative (ADAPT) program Scholarship o Complete at least one mentored scholarly project. Courses focus on the theoretical foundations and practical applications of curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional design, student assessment, leadership and organizations, and research methods. Simulation-based educational programs in the EM residency program and Graham Clinical Performance Center will serve as venues for the application of MHPE coursework. MHPE Program Goals To provide health professions education leaders with a broad and rigorous foundation in the theory and practice of education

3 To provide healthcare organizations with effective and innovative leaders who will serve the needs of their communities To provide the field of health professions education with scholars who will advance our understanding and practice of education in the health professions Simulation Leadership Training Fellows will be trained to develop, implement and evaluate simulation-based educational programs including the use of simulation modalities such as high-fidelity mannequins, task trainers and standardized patients. The Fellowship includes two days a week on average at the Dr. Allan L and Mary L Graham Clinical Performance Center (GCPC).. The GCPC will provide readings, direct instruction, and supervised practice for Fellows. Fellows will observe GCPC staff and attend faculty development and staff development workshops offered by the GCPC, including debriefing workshops, scenario writing workshops, and a one-week Standardized Patient-based Education Certificate Program. Educational objectives: at the completion of the Fellowship the Fellow will be able to: 1. Design educational programs using high-fidelity mannequins, write scenarios, operate mannequins, serve as a confederate in mannequin scenarios, and effectively debrief learners. 2. Develop and implement standardized- patient-based educational programs, write SP scripts,and train SPs to portray cases and provide feedback to learners. 3. Design instructional programs for teaching procedural skills 4. Design checklists, rating scales and other instruments for the assessment of learners and evaluation of simulation-based programs; evaluate and maximize the validity of simulation-based assessments. 5. Create other instructional materials (eg videos) for SBE programs. By the end of the Fellowship the Fellow will be prepared and encouraged to take the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) Exam of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Research and Scholarship Each Fellow will develop a thesis as part of the MHPE program; the thesis consists of conducting a work of scholarship and describing it in a manuscript that is ready for submission to a journal. Fellowship Directors will provide mentorship and supervision of research and scholarship activities. Fellows may also initiate or collaborate in smaller research and evaluation projects and are encouraged to disseminate their work via posters, presentations and submissions to journals and MedEdPortal.

4 EM Educational Leadership Training Emergency Medicine Residency Program Activities Fellows will participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of monthly EM didactic sessions held at UIC. They will help coordinate monthly simulation and OSCE sessions for EM residents. The Fellows will participate in a variety of EM residency leadership meetings such as the Program Evaluation Committee, Clinical Competency Committee and the Joint Conference Committee to understand the residency accreditation requirements, residency organizational structure and governance. Fellows will also be involved in collaborating on EM faculty development sessions for skills maintenance. Emergency Medicine Clinical Responsibilities Fellows are considered.25 time Clinical Instructors at UIC and are expected to work an average of 20 clinical hours per week in the emergency department divided between the University of Illinois Hospital and a UIC affiliated hospital. ACEP Teaching Fellowship Fellows will participate in this program designed to help develop the skills needed to become successful in an academic environment, become an excellent academic instructor, and enhance management and leadership skills. The program is 11 days and is covered in two sessions (fall and spring) in Dallas Texas. Costs of this program are covered and registration is guaranteed. Academic Development and Professionalism Collaborative (ADAPT) A year long collaborative aimed at providing a forum for all UIC Fellows in fellowship training (Toxicology, Ultrasound, Resuscitation, International, and Simulation and Medical Education) to meet, gather, share ideas, and gain skills and knowledge that are complementary to individual fellowship programs. The mission is to develop future leaders and researchers in academic medicine. Topics include grant writing workshops, research, mentoring, teaching and creating teaching portfolios, and work-life balance in academic careers. Benefits Fellows will have a tuition waiver for the MHPE program during the Fellowship. The Fellowship will fund the ACEP teaching fellowship. Membership in SSH and attendance at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare will be provided by the GCPC. Opportunities for teaching and presenting scholarly work in international settings are available for interested fellows.
