Topics covered Statistics 2013-14. Duty of care. Function of guards. Machine guarding process. Hierarchy of machine guarding. Types of guards. Properties of guarding.

Learning outcomes Understand your duty of care to provide a safe work environment for workers. Ensure that machine and plant equipment are adequately guarded.

Statistics 2013-14 A total of 166 incidents comprising: serious injuries medically treated inpatient dangerous reportable incidents.

Function of guard A physical or other barrier that: prevents contact with moving parts screens harmful emissions minimises noise prevents ejection of parts.

Machine guarding Comprehensive safety management system process The process should include: risk identification, assessment and control Safe Work Method Statements Hierarchy of hazard control Consultation with Workers trained and competent workers

Prevention using guarding Prevention is Selecting The right type of guarding on machinery

Types of machine guarding Permanently Fixed Guard Interlock Guard Fixed Guard Presence- Sensing

Examples of permanently fixed guards

Examples of interlock guards

Examples of fixed guards

Example of a presence sensing system (pressure mat)

Example of presence sensing (light guard)

Guarding properties Guarding must: be of solid construction and securely mounted prevent by-passing or disabling of the guard not create a risk in itself be properly maintained control any risk from potential broken or ejected parts and work pieces allow for servicing, maintenance and repair. If guarding is removed the plant cannot be restarted unless the guarding is replaced
