2013 Scholarships for Ross High School Students As you read the scholarship descriptions, you will notice that many scholarships have been established in memory of lost loved ones. Friends and family members have established these scholarships and written the criteria to honor those special people who touched the lives of so many. Please take your time as you read the criteria and get to know about them. ONLY apply for those scholarships for which you meet the criteria. Also, please make sure you include all documents that are requested for specific scholarships. Note: Awards may vary based on number of applicants and funds available. Elizabeth V. Allen Memorial Scholarship Although Miss Allen was born in Vermont, she made her home in Hamilton during the last 15 years of her life. Miss Allen was a graduate of Skidmore College, with a Master of Science from Columbia University. She was very interested in helping those in the community who were less fortunate. At the time of her death, this scholarship was established by her friends and family in her memory. Bast-Connelly Memorial Merit Scholarship The Foundation received a gift from the estate of Mrs. Mary Virginia Bast-Connelly. This gift is to be used for a scholarship for deserving academic students, regardless of financial need. Award: $2,500 for one year Merit Based David L. & Margery Beckett Belew Merit Scholarship Consistent with their lifelong interest in music, the Belews established their scholarship to encourage musically talented young people who want to pursue a career in music. Their scholarship is awarded to a senior who has demonstrated outstanding musical ability, and who has shared those talents with the school and the community. Prefer student who plays the piano. The Belews have two children, Guy Beckett Belew and Sally Conrad Streeter, and six grandchildren. Mr. Belew served two terms as President of the Board of Trustees (1970-71, 1999-2001) and now serves as Trustee Emeritus at the Foundation. Award: $1,000 for one year Merit Based Esther Benzing Memorial Scholarship Mrs. Benzing, an esteemed area historian and author, established this scholarship fund for the benefit of area high school seniors. The recipient must be a student interested in pursuing additional educational opportunities in the field of agriculture. Mrs. Benzing had a history of volunteering her time for many worthwhile projects. Award: $500 for one year - Based on Need $$$ Elizabeth R. Betten Memorial Scholarship This fund was established by Cornelius Betten in memory of his wife, Elizabeth. Additional contributions were made in 1999, at the death of his daughter, Mary Betten Katz. Mr. Betten is a retired research chemist with Champion International. Hamilton Community Foundation - Ross High School Scholarships - 2010 Page

William J. Boehm Foundation - Connector Manufacturing Company Scholarship William J. Boehm, Chairman, Connector Manufacturing Company, established this fund to support the children of Connector employees in their pursuit of obtaining a college education. Mr. Boehm passed away March 3, 2012. Scholarships are awarded to applicants who meet the award criteria of academic achievement, citizenship, leadership qualities, extracurricular activities and employment records. Student must have a parent currently employed at Connector Manufacturing Co. and maintain a 3.0GPA. Award: $3,000 per year for four years Merit Based Mr. and Mrs. W. Otis Briggs Scholarship This fund was created by the Board of Trustees in honor of Mr. Briggs retirement as Executive Director of the Hamilton Community Foundation. Additional funds were added at Mr. Briggs death in 1995. The fund offers a scholarship to a student planning to attend the Hamilton campus of Miami University and majoring in human care services (nursing, social sciences, etc.). Mr. Briggs, a Founder and Trustee of the Hamilton Community Foundation, has been described as the Architect of the Foundation. He was its first Executive Director and served until his retirement in 1980. He was also the Executive Director of the United Way of Hamilton from 1943 to 1976. His second wife, Virginia, retired in 1981 after 19 years with United Way. She is an active volunteer for service organizations and projects in our community. Otis had two sons, Wayne Briggs and Lloyd Briggs, two daughters, Judy Athey and Marty Comb, and a stepson, J.D. White. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Connelly Memorial Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established from the estate of Mrs. Mary Virginia Connelly to be used for a scholarship for deserving students who need assistance in acquiring their educations regardless of financial need. Mr. Richard Connelly wrote for the Journal-News. Mrs. Connelly passed away October 28, 1992. Award: $2,500 for one year Merit Based Charles Dees, Delores Dees Kees and Bernice Dees Cullinan Award This fund was established by the family of Charles Dees. He was born in Hamilton and employed by Mosler Safe Company in the development of the drive-in depository system for banks. Charles traveled throughout the United States installing this equipment. Charles married his high school sweetheart, Owanna, in 1945 and they had three children, Patricia, Stephen and Rebecca. He passed away in March 2005. Delores Dees Kees resided in Brookville, Indiana, after being born in Hamilton and having lived in Ross. She attended Ross schools, Miami University and worked as an LPN in the healthcare industry. She was a member of the Morgan Township Historical Society. She has two daughters, Kathy Nunier and Noreen Northness. Delores passed away in April 2006. Bernice E. Cullinan, a resident of New York, is a renowned author of children s literature. She has written over 30 books on literature for classroom teachers and librarians. She was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame and The Ohio State University Hall of Fame, and selected as the recipient of the Arbuthnot Award for Outstanding Teacher of Children s Literature. This scholarship will be awarded to a resident of Morgan Township attending Badin, Harrison or Ross High Schools and majoring in education to become a teacher. Award: $500 for one year Merit Based David R. and Dorothy S. Eichel Memorial Scholarship This fund was established from the estate of Mr. Eichel for the higher education of deserving children in our area. Mr. Eichel was an engineer at Champion International. He and his wife, Dorothy, felt strongly that all children should have a chance to obtain a college degree. Student must be a Hamilton resident. Austin and Lois Gleason Scholarship This fund was created by Austin and Lois Gleason to award a scholarship to an outstanding student athlete Mr. Gleason is a retired pharmacist and Mrs. Gleason taught school in the Fairfield School District. The Gleasons are the parents of two children, Austin W. Gleason, Jr. (Wes), and Melanie Joy Farler. Award: $1,000 for one year Merit Based Fannie Gray Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established by the estate of Fannie Gray to benefit African-American students excelling in academic courses and planning to attend college. Award: $500 for one year - Merit Based Davene Harris Memorial Scholarship The family and friends of Davene Harris wished to honor her memory with a scholarship for a senior with financial need and pursuing higher education. Mrs. Harris served in the Hamilton City Schools for 27 years in various capacities from Library Aide to Building Secretary. She left a legacy of faith, dedication and integrity to all who knew her. She never missed an opportunity to encourage others, especially students. The scholarship is intended to continue this encouragement by assisting young people who have done the best they could academically and are intent on realizing their full potential and purpose. Davene devoted most of her time to her church, Immanuel Baptist, where she was involved as a deaconess and Sunday school teacher. Her other favorite past-time was her grandchildren. Mrs. Harris was the wife of Lonnie Ray Harris and the mother of Jeff Harris and Michelle Harris Fall. Walter and Marion Boyd Havighurst Memorial This fund was established by the estate of Mr. Havighurst. Mr. Havighurst was a Miami University professor emeritus, an author, English teacher and Miami history buff who devoted his career and much of his life to the Oxford school. Walter lived in Oxford for more than 60 years before he passed away at age 92. Mrs. Havighurst was a poet, novelist, nature lover and English department colleague. She passed away in 1974. This scholarship is designated for a student planning to attend Miami University. Award: $2,500 for one year - Based on Need $$$ Jane E Howe Memorial Scholarship This fund was established by friends and family of Miss Howe to provide a nursing scholarship for an area student. Miss Howe graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing in 1935. She worked as medical secretary for Dr. James Carr, served on Western College Board and was involved with Westover Retirement Community. Lamont B. Jacobs Orthodontic Merit Scholarship This fund was established by Dr. Jacobs to support students pursing a degree in the dental field. Award: $2,000 for one year Merit Based Shirley M. Leppert Memorial Scholarship This fund was established in memory of Shirley Leppert, a very beloved teacher at the Presbyterian Preschool. This scholarship is for students with physical disabilities who plan to attend college. Awards are Based on Need $$$ and merit. Applicants must be a resident of Hamilton. Shirley was a dedicated member of Sallies, the Salvation Army Auxiliary Club. She also was a Meals on Wheels driver. An avid traveler, she traveled around the world three times visiting 55 foreign countries. She also enjoyed playing bridge. Shirley was the wife of Harold and mother of two sons, Gregory and David. Harry Lingal Memorial Scholarship This fund was established by a bequest from the estate of Mr. Lingal, who was a research engineer with Mosler Safe Company. The scholarship benefits a student majoring in engineering. Manitsas Health Services Scholarship This scholarship fund was established by Mrs. William Wolf in honor of Dr. Manitsas and is given to a deserving student who is majoring in a health science field. Dr. Manitsas is a leading physician in Hamilton whose practice deals with cardiovascular diseases. Preference: A student majoring in higher mathematics or sciences Galen and Ruth Maurer Music Scholarship This fund was established by Mrs. Maurer to support her longtime interest in music. This scholarship is for a student planning to attend college and major in music. Mrs. Maurer has been singing in a church choir since she was five years old, and has been a member of the Presbyterian Choir since 1952. Her musical talent also afforded her the opportunity to sing in the May Festival Chorus in Cincinnati. Mr. Maurer was also a member of the choir until his death in 1994. Mrs. Maurer has many community interests, including the Presbyterian Church, Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park & Museum, Hamilton Sister Cities, Hamilton-Fairfield Symphony Orchestra and Berkeley Square Retirement Community. Award: $500 for one year - Based on Need $$$ George C. & Freida B. McCandless Memorial Scholarship This fund was established by George C. and Frieda B. McCandless. Mrs. McCandless was Vice Mayor of Hamilton, an officer in state and local mental health organizations, President of the League of Women Voters, and Chairman of the United Way Planning Division. George C. McCandless was a former state senator and had been honored by the Butler County Bar Association for his 50 years of service as a lawyer. At Mr. McCandless' death in 1989, he requested that a scholarship be given in both their names. Mr. McCandless had one daughter, Sara Curryer Pringle. Award: $2,000 per year for four years - Based on Need $$$ Alberta Pratt Memorial Scholarship This scholarship fund was established by Miss Pratt with the hope of helping others who intend to enter a health-related profession. Miss Pratt was an Ohio University graduate with a nursing degree. She was employed in the Admitting Department of Mercy Hospital Hamilton for eight years. She started the Hamilton Blood Bank, which she operated for 14 years. In addition, Miss Pratt owned and operated the Hamilton Telephone Answering Service for 17 years. She passed away on June 19, 1993, at the age of 83. Award: $2,500 per year for four years - Based on Need $$$ Vernon & Louise Roden Memorial Scholarship This fund was established as a scholarship fund by Mrs. Roden in memory of her husband, Vernon. Dr. Roden was a medical doctor and Louise a retired school counselor. This scholarship is to benefit high school seniors planning to obtain a degree from a two-year technical school or a four-year accredited university. Criteria for selection are based on the student's ambition and motivation, as well as academic achievement and financial need. NOTE: Also, to be eligible for this scholarship, in addition to the general Foundation scholarship essay, you must also include in your essay information describing a hardship that you were able to overcome. Award: $2,000 per year for four years Based on Need $$ Nellie & Ralph Sauer Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established from the estate of Nellie & Ralph Sauer to support students pursuing a college education. Donald & Millicent Schirmer Memorial Scholarship This fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. Schirmer to support educational opportunities for young people attending Miami University. In addition to many other community involvements, Donald Schirmer was the former President and partner of the Permanent Savings and Loan and President of the Butler County Commissioners for 12 years. He and his wife of 50 years, Millicent, are the parents of three children, Donna S. Seidel, Sue S. Albrecht and Dave H. Schirmer. Mr. Schirmer passed away on November 23, 1996. Mrs. Schirmer passed away March 27, 2008. Award: $2,000 per year for four years Merit based John A. Shafer Nursing Memorial Scholarship This fund honors Mr. Shafer s lifelong commitment to helping students reach their educational goals by offering a scholarship to a young man or woman who wants to pursue a career in nursing. Mr. Shafer was the former President and owner of Shafer Implement Company. His family is most proud of his dedication to helping students through scholarships he set up through the Miami University Fund and the Hamilton Community Foundation. Award: $2,500 per year for four years - Based on Need $$$ David L. Stitsinger Memorial Merit Scholarship This scholarship fund was established in memory of Mr. Stitsinger to support students pursing a career in education. He was a graduate of Taft High School and received a B.S. in education from The Ohio State University. He received his master s degree in education administration from Miami University. He was employed by Home Federal Savings and Loan for 18 years, where he had been named Interim CEO. He had been involved with many organizations in the community throughout his lifetime. He and his wife, Judy, have three children, Steven, Stacey and Kari. Mr. Stitsinger passed away on June 15, 1991, at the age of 47. Award: $1,000 for one year Merit Based Susan C Thum Memorial Scholarship This scholarship fund was established through the estate of Miss Susan Thum, in memory of her parents. Miss Thum was a teacher in the Mt. Healthy Schools. This scholarship is for a student majoring in education. Award: $2,000 per year for four years - Based on Need $$$ John and Clara Wallace Memorial Scholarship This fund was established from the estate of Mrs. Clara Wallace to provide scholarships to deserving students in need of financial assistance. Award: $2,500 per year for four years Based on Need $$$ Francis and Mabel Wilks Memorial Scholarship This fund was established by the Wilks family in memory of their parents and is to be used for a scholarship for a student planning to go into social work. They are the parents of four children, Harry T. Wilks, William C. Wilks, Marge Handel and Francis Wilks (deceased). Jean and William Wolf Memorial Scholarship This fund was established in memory of Jean & William Wolf to provide scholarships for students at Hamilton and Badin High Schools. Mr. Wolf was a lifelong resident of Hamilton and co-founder with Walter Rentschler of Southwestern Ohio Steel Company in 1945. Mr. Wolf worked in the business for more than 40 years. He was co-founder of Family Services of Butler County and the Hamilton Community Foundation where he also served as Trustee. The Wolf s were married for 66 years and had two daughters and one son. Mr. Wolf passed away December 23, 1996 and Mrs. Wolf passed away March 14, 2008. Award: $2,500 for one year Merit Based Hamilton Community Foundation - Ross High School Scholarships - 2013 Page 6
