CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability r16 CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability Deployment Options for Microsoft Hyper-V Server TYPICALLY, IT COST REDUCTION INITIATIVES DRIVE THE ADOPTION OF SERVER VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS MICROSOFT HYPER-V SERVER. THE RESULT IS SERVER CONSOLIDATION, REDUCED OPERATIONAL EXPENDITURE (OPEX) AND REDUCED SYSTEM MANAGEMENT. MAINSTREAM ADOPTION OF VIRTUALIZATION TECHNOLOGY HAS ALSO ENABLED ORGANIZATIONS TO MORE EASILY AND ECONOMICALLY ESTABLISH RELIABLE DISASTER RECOVERY (DR) STRATEGIES THAT CAN ASSIST IN PROVIDING REAL-TIME DATA PROTECTION, RAPID DATA RECOVERY AND IMPROVED DATA AND SYSTEM AVAILABILITY. WHEN AN ORGANIZATION ADOPTS THIS TECHNOLOGY, MOST USERS REALIZE THAT THE TECHNOLOGY ADDS A NEW LEVEL OF COMPLEXITY TO ACHIEVING THEIR DATA PROTECTION, SYSTEM AVAILABILITY AND DISASTER RECOVERY GOALS. PROTECTING VIRTUAL SERVERS (HOSTS) IS NOT EXACTLY THE SAME AS PROTECTING PHYSICAL SERVERS BUT THERE ARE SOLUTIONS IN THE MARKET THAT DO BOTH. 1 CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability CA ARCserve Replication software is used to address several IT and business needs. It provides continuous data protection for Windows, Linux and UNIX environments on both physical and virtual servers. You get real-time data replication (between your Production server and Replica server), whether you deploy this solution on-premise, off-premise or in the cloud, so this software solution complements any periodic backup or snapshot solution. CA ARCserve Replication includes 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption across the network without the need for a virtual private network (VPN) or IPSec tunnel for added security. The Data Rewind feature in CA ARCserve Replication enables fast and easy data recovery after accidental or malicious loss and damage. In this way, organizations can recover data and databases faster and more easily between periodic backups, and meet more demanding recovery point objectives. You can also use CA ARCserve Replication to quickly and easily copy backups off-site for disaster recovery, eliminating the risk, cost and complexity of physical media transport. Use CA ARCserve Replication to migrate from old servers to new servers and from physical servers to virtual servers. When you combine it with your backup solution, you get total data protection. And now, you get integration with the Amazon cloud (through Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2)), so you can leverage a third-party DR facility, services and support that have a defined service-level agreement. CA ARCserve High Availability software is used to minimize business downtime due to unplanned system and application outages on both physical and virtual servers. It s based on CA ARCserve Replication technology and adds server and application monitoring with automatic and push-button failover for high availability. You also get push-button failback, which is used after the Production server has been repaired or replaced. And of course, CA ARCserve High Availability includes Data Rewind for continuous data protection (CDP). It also offers Full System Replication and Failover for Windows-based servers and virtual machines that replicates the operating system, system state, application and data to an offline Microsoft Hyper-V server, or other VMware ESX and VMware vsphere or Citrix XenServer virtual server, to help ease and speed deployment while reducing costs. The failover process automatically stands up the offline virtual server when it is needed. Both CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability include an automated, non-disruptive recovery testing feature called CA ARCserve Assured Recovery that helps to ensure that your systems, applications and data are ready for use on the Replica server. In the following sections, we discuss some of the commonly deployed use cases for CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability in Microsoft Hyper-V Server environments. Remember that, for maximum flexibility, both CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability also support VMware ESX, VMware vsphere and Citrix XenServer.

Physical-to-virtual (Guest) replication and CA ARCserve High Availability When you are building any data protection and disaster recovery strategy by using CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability, a common deployment scenario is to replicate data residing on physical Production servers to virtual Replica servers in the data center or at a remote site, such as a remote data center, remote office or MSP-hosting facility, or even to a private cloud or the Amazon cloud (AWS and Amazon EC2) that is acting as a DR site. After the Production server and the Replica server are synchronized, byte-level changes to application, database and file data on the Production servers are continuously captured and replicated to an active VM (Guest) running on the Microsoft Hyper-V server delivering continuous on-site and offsite data protection. For security, you get built-in, 128-bit SSL encryption over the network without having to use a virtual private network (VPN) or IPSec tunnel. When using CA ARCserve High Availability, if there is an application, system or hardware outage, application services on the Replica server are automatically started and users and application workloads are automatically redirected, minimizing business downtime. Alternatively, it is possible to set push-button failover so that IT staff can investigate issues first and then perform failover if they think it necessary. You may deploy the Replica server locally or at any remote site including an MSPhosting In the configuration above, a license for CA ARCserve Replication or CA ARCserve High Availability, based on the type of operating system (Windows, Linux or UNIX) and level (Standard, Enterprise or Cluster), is required for each physical server or cluster resource group from which data will be replicated. In addition, each of the VMs (Guests) that are used as replication targets would require a CA ARCserve Replication or CA ARCserve High Availability Windows or Linux Virtual Machine license. Note that Virtual Machine licenses are discounted for additional cost savings. This configuration can be attractive because the services for the protected applications installed on the virtual machines are not always online or running and they may be considered by the software manufacturer to be offline, cold or in a stand-by mode. For this reason, additional operating system or application licensing may not be required. Verify your licensing agreements and/or consult with your various operating system and application vendors to ensure software license compliance. VM (Guest) to VM (Guest) replication and high availability When both your Production and Replica servers are virtualized, the replication and failover processes work in an almost identical way t o the process described above. The exception is CA ARCserve Replication or CA ARCserve High Availability are installed and configured on each of the individual virtual machines (VMs/Guests) on both the Production and Replica servers. The CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability unified, web-based management console makes it quick and easy. You may deploy the Replica server locally or at any remote site including an MSPhosting 2

In this scenario, customers purchase the lower-priced CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability Virtual Machine licenses for both the Production server and the Replica server. As we discussed in the previous scenario, make sure that you check your operating system and application license agreements to determine your own operating system and application licensing requirements for the VMs (Guests) on the Replica server. Full System Replication using Microsoft Hyper-V Server (Host) In addition to its core data replication and system failover features, CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability provide Full System Replication that performs replication of a complete physical or virtual Windows server (including the operating system, system state, application and data) to an offline VM (Guest) residing on a Microsoft Hyper-V Server (Host). The Replica VM (Guest) is effectively a clone of the Production server or VM, so it must remain in an offline state until failover to prevent IP, name or network conflicts. This configuration supports a larger set of applications and environments because it is protecting the entire system. In addition, it s much easier to deploy this configuration because you are not required to first manually provision the Replica server. In this scenario, standard licensing for CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability applies. You can deploy it locally or at any remote site including an MSPhosting Hypervisor (Host) to Hypervisor (Host) replication and high availability When protecting Hyper-V servers, you might consider the advantages gained through Hypervisor-level replication. In this scenario, CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability provide replication and failover for all (or selected) VMs (Guests) on the Production server. However, only one license is required per virtual server (Host), reducing deployment time and costs because the software is only installed on the Microsoft Hyper-V Server parent partition on the Production and Replica servers. CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability can auto-discover all the underlying VMs and continuously replicate the changes. If the Production Hyper-V server fails, CA ARCserve High Availability will automatically bring the Replica Hyper-V server online and redirect users and workloads. If there is an individual VM (Guest) outage, CA ARCserve High Availability automatically starts the appropriate VM (Guest) on the Replica server running Microsoft Hyper-V Server (Host). You can deploy it locally or at any remote site including an MSPhosting 3

Additional benefits of this scenario include reduced CPU and memory usage and lower licensing costs because each VM no longer requires its own locally installed copy of CA ARCserve Replication or CA ARCserve High Availability. Only one physical server license (based on the appropriate Windows Server level) would be required for each Production server (Host) and Replica server (Host). The Replica server (Host) is a complete copy of the Production server (Host), so virtually any application may be protected. Finally, each VM on the Replica server is offline until a failover occurs, so this scenario is much more likely to fit the varied definition of a cold site, which could further reduce licensing costs for the operating system and applications. As mentioned previously, you should check your licensing agreements and/or consult with the various operating system and application vendors to ensure compliance. Note that, when you use CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability at the Hypervisor level, some features may be unavailable or have limited functionality. For example, the CA ARCserve Assured Recovery feature is unavailable and the Data Rewind function offers reduced granularity when you select a rewind point. When these features are required, a hybrid scenario (discussed below) can offer the best of both Hypervisor-level and Guest-level replication. 4

Hybrid Mixed Hypervisor (Host) and Virtual Machine (Guest) replication and high availability A hybrid scenario is one where you might identify a handful of VMs/Guests such as a Microsoft Exchange server or SQL Server server t hat would benefit from having CA ARCserve Assured Recovery and the more granular Data Rewind features available. All other VMs would be configured as part of the Hypervisor-level protection scenario. Licensing in this scenario is simple using the CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability Host-Based Virtual Machine licensing. This licensing option offers the flexibility to protect the Host (at the Hypervisor level) as well as an unlimited number of Windows-based VMs (Guests) on that Host. This delivers significant cost savings, depending on the number of VMs (Guests) being protected. Note that a Host-based license is only valid for a single virtual server (Host) and you cannot split VM (Guest) licenses across multiple host systems. Additional licensing information In addition to VM/Guest-based licensing and Host-based licensing, CA ARCserve Replication and CA ARCserve High Availability offer a discounted VM five-pack license (five VM (Guest) licenses) that you may use across multiple Hosts. For larger deployments that have 2 GB or more data to protect, you can use Managed Capacity licensing with graduated license and pricing bands, based on the total number of gigabytes of data that you are replicating. This licensing option offers significantly reduced pricing and easier licensing and maintenance for larger environments. Customers must select one or three years of maintenance included with any license purchased. Summary There is a wide range of data protection and system availability tools on the market, as well as those capabilities included in the core operating system and virtualization platforms. One important consideration in choosing your solution is ensuring that it equally protects physical and virtual server environments (and multiple virtual server platforms). Most organizations have both, and managing multiple-point solutions is more expensive, complex and challenging. Leveraging virtualization technology for replication and high availability to help reduce data protection, availability and DR costs makes perfect sense.
