HL7 International: Mission global To create the best and most widely used standards in healthcare. HL7 international provides standards for interoperability that improve care delivery, optimize workflow, reduce ambiguity and enhance knowledge transfer among all of stakeholders, including healthcare providers, government agencies, the vendor community, fellow SDOs and patients. In all its processes HL7 exhibits timeliness, scientific rigor and technical expertise without compromising transparency, accountability, practicality, or the willingness to put the needs of the stakeholders first. Are there Alternatives to HL7? UN/EDIFACT Originated from CEN in Europe. Large number of messages: Transport, Customs, Supply Chain, etc. Healthcare messages have found only limited use HL7 and CEN have a Memorandum of Understanding XML a set of rules for encoding documents electronically Not a content standard HL7 V2.x, V3 and CDA use XML Anyone can make their own specification, but they would not be global standards, be supported by training, certification, and a vibrant international community! HL7 Affiliates: Background Information 1987: Work on HL7 starts in US 1993/94: Germany and The Netherlands become the first International Affiliates 1997: Australia the first government to acknowledge HL7 as the healthcare messaging standard 2000: 1 st International Affiliates Meeting held in Dresden, Germany 2005: 1 st HL7 Working Group Meeting held in Europe. September 2014: International Council has 36 members and growing.. HL7 Around the World 14
