International Sports Law Twenty years ago the European Court of Justice delivered its instantaneously famous Bosman judgment. Not only did the judgment trigger a fundamental upheaval of the transfer system and grant the players more rights, it also had a profound impact on the governance of football. Various members of the football family initially perceived the ruling as a vital threat. In the end, Bosman sparked a productive rethinking of the way football is regulated in Europe and beyond. New regulations concerning agents, the contractual status of players, and the financial obligations of clubs were devised. Meanwhile, old restrictions on foreign players were progressively abandoned, opening the way for a truly transnational field of play for football as an economic activity. New judicial institutions have taken a prominent role, such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport or the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber. Finally, UEFA and FIFA have been able to consolidate their governing position, by reaping more and more revenues and becoming the true European and World governments of football. This new environment is full of (legal) challenges and opportunities. Lawyers, agents, players, managers and club officials, everyone is adapting to this regulatory structure. In fact, it is becoming more and more difficult to navigate the intricacies of the football world without a thorough knowledge of both FIFA s and UEFA s functioning and regulations. Photo: EPA The skills needed to be successful in the football industry implies a capacity to master the fundmentals of FIFA s and UEFA s private regulations, to understand the basic principles underlying the CAS arbitration procedure, and to be aware of the rights and duties imposed by EU law on the football world. This programme aims to ensure that you will be capable of advising players when they need to transfer from one country to another, to represent a club when it faces an UEFA investigation on the basis of its Financial Fair Play Regulations, or to negotiate TV rights in full cognition of the constraints imposed by EU law in this domain. In short, the Summer Programme will engage, challenge, and equip you with the necessary knowledge and understanding of European and international football law.
