Grand Hotel des Bains Residenze Lido di Venezia Il lungo cordone litoraneo di Venezia è stato luogo di rifugio e d ispirazione dei grandi personaggi del vecchio e nuovo continente come Goethe, Byron, George Sand e De Musset, ma la sua storia rimane per secoli legata alla Serenissima Repubblica. Scelto quale luogo deputato per esercitazioni e addestramenti militari, dal Lido si erano imbarcati nel 1202 quei crociati che mai raggiunsero la Terra Santa ma che misero a sacco Costantinopoli, nel 1685 da qui parte il contingente capitanato dal duca di Brunswick per combattere i Turchi e nel 1574 Andrea Palladio innalza un arco e una loggia per la visita ufficiale di Enrico III re di Francia. Nella seconda metà dell Ottocento uomini, imprenditori coraggiosi, fanno decollare il Lido come stazione balneare e il 16 gennaio 1872 nasce la Società civile Bagni Lido e nel 1881 un comodo tramway portava gli ospiti dal Gran Viale allo Stabilimento Bagni. Nel 1900 sorge l Hotel Des Bains, biancheggiante fabbrica, visibile anche per chi arriva a Venezia dal mare; realizzato dai fratelli Raffaello e Francesco Marsich, in stile liberty, fortemente rispecchia il gusto del tempo che molto guardava alle forme architettoniche austriache. Tre corpi di fabbrica articolati in un corpo centrale a sei piani e due laterali a cinque con entrambi i lati sud e nord ornati di ampie terrazze luoghi di meravigliosi The Venetian stretch of the Italian coast has always been a refuge and inspirational muse for many influential personages from both the old and new continents such as Goethe, Byron, George Sand and De Musset, yet its history has been dependant for centuries on the destiny of the Republic of Venice, La Serenissima. It was from the Lido, once appointed for military training and exercises, that those Crusaders who never reached the Holy Land set sail in 1202, Constantinople being as far as they reached. Later on, in 1685, the fleet, led by the Duke of Brunswick, sailed off from Venice to fight against the Turks. In 1574 Andrea Palladio built an arch and a lodge there for the state visit of Henry III, king of France. In the second half of 1800 some far-sighted entrepreneurs invested in the Lido, turning it into a successful beach resort. On 6 th January 1872 the Società civile Bagni Lido was funded and in 1881 a tramway linked Grand Viale to the resort. In 1900 The Hotel Des Bains was opened, a white palace, also visible from a distance for those coming by sea to Venice. The project was designed by brothers Raffaello and Francesco Marsich in stile liberty, in line with the tastes of the time, strongly influenced by Austrian architectural forms.

Il Des Bains fu anche il primo grande albergo del Lido a essere dotato di spiaggia privata, esclusiva, delimitata da due lunghe file di camerini e capanne dalle tende color ruggine. Il 5 luglio 1900 viene inaugurato con una sfarzosa serata il Des Bains, albergo che già all epoca possedeva tutti i requisiti che poteva richiedere una clientela internazionale raffinata d élite: acqua potabile, illuminazione elettrica sfarzosa, ghiacciaie, telefoni, ascensori, caloriferi e bagni. In occasione dell apertura il Presidente e il Direttore della Società Civile Bagni i cavalieri Musatti e Tommasini indissero una grande festa inaugurale per cento persone che iniziò alle 19 del 5 luglio 1900 e si protrasse fino alle prime luci dell alba. La Gazzetta di Venezia del 6 luglio riporta: Le tavole, ornate da trionfi di gelsomini e frutta, erano state imbandite con raffinate cristallerie e porcellane; un servizio inappuntabile. Tra gli invitati si trovava anche Nicolò Spada, allora direttore della Società degli Alberghi, che negli anni a venire avrebbe dato grande impulso alla struttura. Durante la Grande Guerra il Lido viene risparmiato dagli attacchi nemici ma il 12 luglio 1916 alle 15.30 un incendio divampa all interno del Des Bains - chiuso per il conflitto in corso distruggendo quasi interamente la parte centrale e l ala sud. A un anno dalla fine del conflitto mondiale la C.I.G.A. avvia un lavoro di ristrutturazione, rapido e di grande rilancio dell albergo salvandone la stagione balneare. Il Grand Hotel des Bains dà inizio a un significativo processo di trasformazione dell isola Venezia Lido che si concretizza nella costruzione del Lungomare. Sala Thomas Mann Eventi e banquet nella sala Thomas Mann: cosi nominata dopo alcuni interventi strutturali nel 1924, è un omaggio al grande scrittore premio Nobel che qui vi soggiornò The hotel comprises three interconnected buildings: the central body with six floors and the south and north wings with five floors, all enjoying wide and lavish terraces. The gardener Pietro Tramontin turned what used to be woodland into a unique garden, offering an infinite variety of trees. This superb island within the island setting protects the privacy of guests very well. The hotel was the first one to provide an exclusive private beach, bordered by two long lines of changing rooms and huts with rust coloured curtains. On the 5th July 1900 The Hotel Des Bais was opened with a sumptuous soiree. The Hotel already offered all the necessary services to attract international élite guests: drinkable water, lavish electric lighting, a cold storage room, telephones, lifts, bathrooms and even central heating. The chairman and director of Società Civile Bagni, Mussatti and Tommasini, organised an opening party for hundred people, which started at 7pm on 5th July and lasted until dawn. The local newspaper, Gazzetta di Venezia, reported on the 6 th July: The tables, elegantly decorated with jasmine and fruit, displayed refined crystal ware and china and there was impeccable service. Among the guests was Niccolò Spada, at that time director of the Association of Hotel, who would promote the scheme in the following years. During the Great War the Lido was not hit by bombings, yet on 12th July 1916 at 3:30pm a fire blazed up inside the hotel, closed during war time, destroying almost entirely the central part and the south wing. One year after the war the C.I.G.A (Italian Company of Grand Hotels) sponsored a rapid and successful renovation of the building, just in time for the summer high season. The Grand Hotel des Bains started a significant process of transformation of the Lido with the subsequent creation of the seafront.
