What Is IMU s Medical & Health Sciences (by Research) Programme About? Overview Postgraduate research forms a major part of IMU s activities in its role as a leader in healthcare provision and innovation. Working for a research higher degree gives students the opportunity to acquire in-depth, specialised knowledge and to apply leading-edge techniques and methodologies. The University prides itself on the facilities and support it provides to research students and on the calibre and dedication of its academic, clinical and technical staff. IMU researchers produced 289 publications in 2014, of which 203 (70.2%) were in indexed journals and 29 were books or book chapters. Of the indexed papers, 56 were in Tier 1, 60 in Tier 2, 46 in Tier 3 and 8 in Tier 4 journals. The total impact factor (IF) obtained for the indexed papers was 439.621. The total H-index value, an index to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar, obtained was 5871. The University allocates more than RM1 million internal funds for research every year. Alongside this commitment, external funding has increased dramatically in recent years since IMU was designated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) as a private university that may apply directly for and receive research funds. Our researchers have subsequently received funding for collaborative research projects in nasopharyngeal carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma, breast cancer, infectious diseases and environmental health. In 2014, IMU received 18 externally sponsored projects amounting to RM3,398,193 from external funding agencies including grants from the Ministry of Education (FRGS and ERGS) and Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (ScienceFund). degree / duration MSc in Medical & Health Sciences (by Research) 1 4 years (full-time), 2 6 years (part-time) PhD in Medical & Health Sciences (by Research) 2 6 years (full-time), 4 8 years (part-time) commencement Throughout the year

A Word from the Dean The IMU postgraduate programme leading to the MSc and PhD in Medical and Health Sciences is primarily obtained through research. Research areas include bioactive molecules, vaccine and drug development, therapeutics, pharmaceutics, cellular mechanisms and molecular basis of pathogenesis, clinical research, community based health issues, nutrition and dietetics, behavioural studies, and medical education. Supervisors are highly experienced faculty members with impressive track record in research and international recognition. PROF CHU WAN LOY Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies BSc (Hons) Biochemistry (UKM), PhD (UM)

How Does the Programme Work? Medical & Health Sciences (by Research) Programme Structure The areas of research expertise of the IMU faculty are as follows: Human and Medical Genetics Biochemistry Cancer / Oncology Molecular Biology / Biotechnology Microbiology Clinical Research Infectious Diseases Psychology Pharmaceutical Sciences Chronic Diseases Community Health Building-Related Illnesses Environmental Health The selection of supervisor(s) will depend very much on the research area and be based on mutual agreement between both parties. Top: Studying in IMU gives postgraduate students the opportunity to take on a project that involves chemical analysis using various scientific instruments. Above: Postgraduate students involved in community-based project collect data by interviewing their subjects and conducting questionnaire survey. Right: Studies on microorganisms are an interesting area of postgraduate research. Students will be trained to work under sterile environment in the culturing of microorganisms.

Why Study Medical & Health Sciences (by Research) at IMU? 1 2 3 An Established Private Healthcare University IMU is Malaysia s first and most established private medical and healthcare university with over 23 years of dedicated focus in healthcare education. IMU offers a range of postgraduate programmes and research in a number of subject areas related to health and healthcare solely by completion of a research-based thesis or a combination of coursework and completion of a research-based thesis.
