A STROLL AROUND THE MADRID OF CERVANTES Four hundred years have passed since the publication of the first part of «Don Quixote», and Madrid is preparing to commemorate the event. The capital played a key role in the life of the author, Miguel de Cervantes, and to this day visitors can follow in his footsteps around the streets of the Huertas area, in the well-known Neighbourhood of the Arts. The printer: Although the building which housed the printing press of Juan de la Cuesta no longer stands-it was located in calle San Eugenio, very close to Atocha station-, there is a plaque which was put up in 1905 to commemorate the fact that the two editions of Don Quixote. His Time in Madrid: At number 18 of Calle Huertas, a plaque reminds us that Cervantes lived here in 1614. It was here that the author brought to life the second part of Don Quixote. A little further on is the intersection of calle del León and calle Huertas. Legend has it that Cervantes also lived here. The Academy of History is located in the same street, in a building formerly known as the New Prayer House, as it was built to house new prayer books at the beginning of the 19th. century. His Mortal Remains: Close by, number 2 of the street nowadays known as calle Lope de Vega bore witness to the final days of Cervantes life. On the site of the writer s final abode there now stands a block of flats with a plaque commemorating his time in the area. Visitors may be surprised to discover that a parallel lane known as Calle Cervantes was in fact home to the writer Lope de Vega. At number 18, we come to a convent, the Convento de las Trinitarias Descalzas. Here lie the mortal remains of the author, as was his express wish, alongside those of his wife. The author s death certificate, dated on the 23rd. of April 1616, is in the Iglesia de San Sebastián. The famous statue of Miguel de Cervantes is located in the heart of the Plaza de Las Cortes, inaugurated in 1835. The pedestal is the work of Isidro González Velázquez, and the figures of Don Quijote and Sancho and of the Adventure of the Lions" are courtesy of José Piquer. In addition to his former places of the residences, Madrid has many reminders among others, numerous statues have been erected in memory of both Cervantes and his most famous character. The monument in the centre of Plaza de España is perhaps the most notable.

MADRID OF THE HAPSBURGS PUERTA DEL SOL - PLAZA MAYOR - PLAZA DE LA VILLA - CASA DE LA VILLA On 3 June 1561, Philip II, the Royal Councils and the Registry of the Royal Seal established themselves in Madrid. The Court of the Great Empire had chosen its capital and this made it a fashionable city. Philip III and Philip IV were the monarchs whose mission was to enlarge and embellish it. In order to make this change, they had the magical architecture of Juan Gómez de ora. Its layout is the one that defines Madrid of the Hapsburgs, 17th century Madrid, perhaps the richest, the most flamboyant, most personal and distinctive of all those the city has had. PUERTA DEL SOL The Puerta del Sol was originally one of the accesses in the wall surrounding Madrid in the XV century. The entranceway was named after the Sun as it faces east in the direction of the rising sun. MAYOR SQUARE The Plaza Mayor is one of the most beautiful, busy and emblematic urban areas in what is known as the Madrid of the House of Austria. The statue of Felipe III on horseback in the centre of the square dates back to 1616, although it was not erected in this distinguished site until the XIX century. It is the work of Juan de Bolonia and Pietro Tacca. VILLA SQUARE There are three remarkable and unique buildings in this mediumsized square in the heart of the Madrid of the Austrias. Looking clockwise from the Calle Mayor, we find on the left the Casa y Torre de los Lujanes, one of the few remaining architectural examples from the XV century left in the city. At the far end of the square, facing the Calle Mayor, is the Casa de Cisneros, built in 1537. This palatial mansion still retains its original distribution around a central courtyard, but its present Plateresque-style appearance is mostly due to renovation by Luis Bellido, who was also responsible for the overhead passageway connecting this building with the neighboring Casa de la Villa. The Casa de Cisneros is presently used as municipal offices.

MADRID SETTING OF THE COURT OUR LADY OF ALMUDENA CATHEDRAL ROYAL PALACE ORIENTE SQUARE ROYAL THEATRE The City of Madrid has been the Court of the king of Spain since 1561. On this tour we offer you a courtly view of the city, following the marks the successive monarchs have left on the city. We will visit several monuments linked to the different Spanish dynasties: Catedral de la Almudena (Our Lady of Almudena Cathedral), Plaza de Oriente, Royal Palace, and the Royal Theatre..., enjoying the charm of its streets, squares and corners. ALMUDENA, CRYPT AND CATHEDRAL Carlos I, in the XVI century, was the first to aspire at building a great cathedral alongside the Royal Palace. Other projects were subsequently studied - amongst them those of Sachetti and Ventura Rodriguez - but the actual work of building the Almudena - in the Calle de Bailén - did not start until 1883 following plans by the Marqués de Cubas, who proposed an impressive Neo-Gothic temple. ROYAL PALACE The Royal Palace, in the Calle de Bailén, is considered to be one of the most emblematic and beautiful buildings in Madrid, not only for its location but also for its architecture and the artistic treasures to be found in its rooms. The Changing of the Royal Guard, Military marches performed by the Royal Guard Symphony Orchestra I staking place every first Wednesday of the month at 12.00 h. except on Official events days. ORIENTE SQUARE AND ROYAL THEATRE José Bonaparte gave the first impulse to the creation of the Plaza de Oriente. Popularly known as the "King of Squares", he wanted to beautify and give a monumental appearance to the front of the Royal Palace by creating a large gardened area. His brief reign, from 1808 to 1812, afforded him only enough time, at least as far as this project is concerned, to demolish the old medieval houses in front of the Palace.
