Huron University: Visual Identity Branding is a strategic discipline, involving identity, reputation, communication and caretaking. It forms the foundation of an organization s knowledge base, strategy and culture. A strong brand, featuring a consistently applied visual identity and messaging, will improve awareness among our students, prospective students, faculty, staff, alumni, associates and the public. Visual Identity is a sharply functional thing. Not only must it serve as the focal point of a communication design system, for digital applications, for stationery, for reports and marketing materials, it is often the only medium through which a large sector of the public will identify our school and its offerings. The design of a visual identity thus becomes an undertaking of the most eacting acuity. It should be distinctive and memorable. Furthermore, it should be practical and easily adapted to a variety of applications. It should be reproducible on the web, in print, in one or two colours, large and small. Its purpose is to identify appropriately, to lend authority, to inform, to persuade and to help create the right visual climate in which we can operate and ecel. We have consolidated the Huron University Visual Identity. The shield has been refined to project clarity and strength, whether large or small. It is one of many components of the overall system, in which all graphic elements, typography, images and color work together to reinforce the Huron Identity and build a bold and distinct image for our University. The goals of the Huron Visual Identity: to communicate more powerfully to look cohesive to look contemporary and relevant to save time and money by streamlining the design process of communication materials to bring focus and understanding of our promise to be one of Canada s pre-eminent universities. 3

1.1 The New Shield The new shield is a celebration of both Huron s history and future. The shield, its red colour, crown, crossed sword and beaver come from the arms of the Bishop of Huron. To emphasize the integral relationship between Western University and its founding college, the shape of the Huron shield has been altered to match Western s, and purple replaces black for a more unified and dynamic look. The elements in the shield have been refined and redrawn, and the founding year of the College has been added. These elements together create a story of history, pride and tradition. The Shield must always accompany the Huron wordmark. It must never be used on its own. Do not separate the shield from the wordmark unless approved by the communications department. The Shield must never be altered. Redrawing or manipulating the Shield compromises the integrity of the Huron brand. 4

U N I V E R S I T Y CANADA UNIVERSITY C ANADA 1.2 The Identity: Horizontal Format The Identity is one of the most important visual components of the brand identity. Its function is to clearly and strongly identify our University. Its typography, colour, shield and configuration are unique. Used consistently it will associate itself with ecellence and all the qualities our institution represents. This page shows the Horizontal Identity, a combination of the wordmark, shield and descriptor. Wordmark The Huron wordmark is typeset in the same custom serif typeface created for the Western logo. The typeface, named in honour of our founder, Bishop Isaac Hellmuth, is called Hellmuth. U N I V E R S I T Y CANADA UNIVERSITY C ANADA Descriptor Outside of London, Ontario, it s important to use the identity with the at Western descriptor. It immediately identifies Huron as part of Western University in Canada. The Identity is a custom element and should only be reproduced from authorized electronic artwork. Any substitution or alteration of the Identity is not acceptable. Reverse The identity can be used in reverse on a purple or red background with the full colour crest, depending on the application. UNIVERSITY C ANADA 5

1.3 The Identity: Vertical Format Variations of the Identity may be used when the Horizontal Identity can not be applied due to format restrictions or legibility concerns. The Vertical Format is ideal for vertical applications on materials that will be used for eternal purposes. Reverse The Identity can be used in reverse on a purple or red background with the full colour crest, depending on the application. 6

1.6 The Identity: Black Only The Identity should only be used in black where colour is not permitted. The reverse version (all white) is to be used when a one-colour process is the only option available. It should only be used on black. 7

1.7 Minimum Sizes Minimum Horizontal Size Minimum Horizontal Size with Descriptor Minimum Horizontal Size with Descriptor Minimum sizes of the Identities have been established to maintain legibility. The minimum size for the Horizontal Identity is 1.125" wide. 1.125" 1.125" 1.125" The minimum size for the Horizontal Identity with Descriptor is 1.125" wide. 1.8 The Identity: Clearspace = half the width of the shield The Identity must be placed within a specific isolation area. This will give the Identity presence when used in combination with other identities or graphic elements. The clear space is defined differently depending on the Identity. The clearspace should always be half the width of the shield. 9

1.9 The Identity: Improper Use These eamples show improper usage of the Identity. Any change from the approved Identity is not permitted. Do not compress or distort the Identity Do not alter the colours Do not place on an angle The Identity must be used correctly to ensure that its visual impact and integrity are not diluted or compromised. Always reproduce the Identity from approved electronic artwork only. These eamples are not intended to form a complete list. Do not place on a colour background Do not place on a dark or complicated background Do not use a screen of the Identity Do not place the Identity within a shape Do not add rules or any other elements Do not create new identity by etracting eisting elements Huron Do not change the relationship between the shield and the wordmark Do not use a different font Do not change sequence of shield.
