3 Miami offers special resources for international students. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services provides guidance to our international students. Highly trained advisers operate a comprehensive New International Student Orientation Program for all of our new international students. During this orientation, advisers help students learn about immigration rules and regulations, academic life and course registration, and campus and community resources. This guidance and support extends beyond orientation and is available for the duration of a student s time at Miami. Learn more at MiamiOH.edu/international. The Office of International Student and Scholar Services can also help you connect with other student resources at Miami, including academic counseling, health services, student activities, and transportation. The American Culture and English (ACE) Program helps some international students with TOEFL or IELTS scores slightly below our usual admission requirements improve their English skills while working toward their bachelor s degree. In this program, you will: Receive conditional admission to Miami University. Earn 15 credits (one semester or five months) toward your university degree. Take one mainstream Miami University course outside of the ACE program. Live in a campus residence hall with American students. Participate in all aspects of university life. Student organizations are an important part of university life in the United States. To be considered for conditional admission through the ACE Program, you may follow the regular application processes. Applicants with TOEFL scores between or IELTS scores between will be automatically considered for the ACE Program. Miami has more than 400 student organizations, including professional, social, Greek, cultural, community service, and spiritual. See a complete list at MiamiOH.edu/hub. Port Columbus International Airport is two hours northeast of Oxford. Indianapolis International Airport is two hours northwest of Oxford. Your life in the ideal student community. Miami is a residential campus, which is an important way to connect with other students. In fact, almost all our first- and second-year students live on campus. Studies show that students who live on campus perform better academically, participate more fully in campus life, and because of this, are better prepared for their careers. Where you live As a first-year student, you choose a Living Learning Community (LLC) with a theme that interests you. Living with others who have similar interests not only connects you with lifelong friends but also gives you activities to participate in throughout the year. Our LLCs have 33 different themes, including: International business Leadership Community service Arts Many international students choose to live in the Global Connections Living Learning Community with American students who are interested in other cultures. For more information about Living Learning Communities, go to MiamiOH.edu/llc. Getting around campus Miami s bus service, included in student fees, provides transportation around campus and the town of Oxford, including its stores and apartment complexes. Uptown Oxford, right next to campus, has restaurants, shops, and a park where you can enjoy concerts and other activities. 4 Tam Pham From: Vietnam Major: Business economics Miami professors really encourage students to visit them during their office hours. With my finance professor, I often spend several hours with him, asking questions and writing practice answers for upcoming tests. I look forward to going to his class because he uses real life examples and makes jokes. Miami promotes a safe environment Miami offers many resources to promote student safety. The Miami University Police Department is a full-service agency whose officers patrol campus 24 hours a day and work in partnership with the Oxford Police Department. Residence halls are locked, and resident students have entry access with their Miami I.D. cards. 5
