Geography Is... More than a dot on the map.
Google Maps Absolute Loca-on North Carolina is located at La7tude degrees North and Longitude 79.0 degrees West. The capital city, Raleigh is located at N/ W
Rela-ve Loca-on Rela7ve loca7on tells where one place is located in rela7on to other places. North Carolina is located on the east coast of the United States; it is one of several states of the southeast. What states border North Carolina?
Photo: Steve Pierce Physical Geography North Carolina has dis7nct physical regions including the Appalachian Mountains. The Black Mountain Range contains several peaks over 6,000 feet; including Mount Mitchell (6,684 U.), the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
Geography is... People and Places Each year, North Carolina hosts a State Fair in Raleigh, the state capital. Nearly one million visitors enjoy the exhibits, foods, concerts, and compe77ons each fall. How many places can you think of that are located within the state fair?
Geography is... People and Places Our state is home to countless fes7vals throughout the year, many directly 7ed to the robust agriculture of NC. From the Blueberry Fes7val in coastal Burgaw, NC, to the Apple Fes7val in the mountain town of Hendersonville, NC, we are blessed with seasonal places for people to gather and celebrate the bounty of our state.

What imprints have humans made on the environment? Has this changed over 7me? In this photo, you see a twen7eth century scene from Wrightsville Beach, NC. How has the coastline changed over 7me through human interac7on?
Public Domain, work of the US Government Movement The Dismal Swamp Canal is located along the eastern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp in North Carolina and Virginia. Built in 1805, the Dismal Swamp Canal is the oldest con7nually operated man made canal in the United States. It s area is 1,203 acres. It provides boaters shelter from the Atlan7c Ocean.
Regions North Carolina is divided by three unique geographic areas: the Coastal Plan (eastern NC), the Piedmont (in central NC), and the mountains (western NC).
By Daritto7117 (Own work) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons Ci-es Charloee is the largest city in North Carolina and seventeenth largest city (by popula7on size) in the United States. Nicknamed auer Queen Charloee as the Queen City, Charloee is home to over 775,000 North Carolina ci7zens.
Transporta-on North Carolina is served by several interstate and U.S. highways that link major ci7es and cross rural areas. How many interstate highways are shown on this map?
Climate From snowy winters in the mountains to sunny beaches in the summer, North Carolina has a temperate climate with four dis7nct seasons.
Ethnicity What is the predominant ancestry for where you live in North Carolina? How does that compare with other regions in the United States?
Popula-on Density Carolina-State-Population-Map.gif North Carolina has urban, suburban and rural areas. Which region of the state has the highest popula7on density?
Agriculture Coeon and tobacco are tradi7onal crops grown in North Carolina. The state leads the na7on in several food crops as well. How do loca7on, landforms, and climate influence crops grown in North Carolina?
Global Trade Trade is important to the economy of North Carolina. The ports of Wilmington and Morehead City are ac7ve in shipping goods into and out of the state. Container ships like the one pictured carry goods across the globe.
Poli-cal Geography North Carolina has 100 coun7es that are poli7cal units below the state level. Each county has a county seat that serves as the government center for the county. Only six states have more coun7es than North Carolina.
Historical Geography North Carolina is not named on this map da7ng from Can you locate some of North Carolina s physical features on the map? When did North Carolina become a separate part of America?
Spa-al Analysis agriculture/2007-hogs.jpg Geographers use spa7al analysis to answer ques7ons about paeerns and distribu7ons of data. From this map, what part of the state has the highest hog produc7on? Why do you think hog farming is concentrated in these places? Why is it less in the western part of the state?
Migra-on Geographers track the movement of people over 7me. What areas of North Carolina saw the greatest increase in Hispanic popula7on from 1990 to 2000? What are some factors that drew people to migrate to North Carolina?
