Please visit Benefits of studying a Foundation Degree The College Merthyr Tydfil offers a wide range of Foundation Degrees which can provide you with the skills required to gain a higher education qualification or to progress onto a BA/BSc Hons Degree at a university of your choice. Foundation Degrees are highly valued by employers and designed to provide relevant skills and knowledge for the region s existing or growing industries. Academic study is combined with employment-based learning in key subject areas so you ll get the chance to learn in the workplace as well as the classroom. Every student matters to us and you are all unique in your individual ways. In addition to providing a wide range of courses, we also provide an environment in which students of every ability, no matter what your ambition, can succeed. This might be in terms of the qualifications you gain, the new skills you acquire, or the extra-curricular or entrepreneurial activities you take part in. However, throughout all of your time with us, you can rest assured that we will provide each and every one of you with the care and support that you deserve. Detailed Induction Programme We will provide you with a detailed induction programme to support you in your first day, weeks and months at the college. Personal Tutor System You will be assigned a personal course tutor, who will support you in the transition into your new college environment and be your dedicated point of reference in all matters concerning your personal, social and academic welfare and the subject areas you are studying. Introducing our one stop learner support service In addition to your personal tutor, our dedicated team of Student Support advisers are here to help, advise and provide key support and guidance on all aspects of pastoral care, including: Health and Well-being We have a team of specialist, qualified and experienced staff, who are here to provide help, advice and guidance on all aspects concerning safeguarding, counselling and health and well-being. We work in partnership with Cwm Taff Health Board to provide a weekly nurse practitioner service. Counselling Service You will have access to a confidential and supportive counselling service provided by a counsellor who is professionally trained, qualified and highly experienced. Careers and Employability We will ensure that you are provided with high quality careers advice and guidance throughout your time at the college. This will include help with your CV, university applications, job applications and advice from a dedicated careers officer. Work Experience Our dedicated Work Experience Officer will work with you in order to ensure you have the opportunity to undertake a work experience placement relevant to your chosen career or university. Faith and Religious Education You will have access to a multi-faith Chaplaincy which will offer advice and information on all faiths. Learning Coach and Disability Support Our disability and learning coach team offers learning support and mentoring on a one-to-one and in-class basis. The team is available to learners with additional learning needs and/or disabilities in an inclusive, non-discriminatory environment. 9 Learning Zone The college has a dedicated Learning Zone, which provides wide ranging, high quality Library services, facilities and support for you. We are a 21st century library that is more than just a store house for resources! Learners can study independently in the silent study area, work together in groups in the multimedia area, which has a range of interactive facilities, or use the social study area, which is equipped with a full range of IT/ digital resources. Friendly, knowledgeable staff are on hand to help you maximise the opportunities that the Learning Zone has to offer, from dedicated one-to-one support to a range of workshops and user education sessions that are designed to enhance the learning experience! Here are some of the comments from current learners: The option to use the quiet room with laptops is fantastic, the Multimedia room has been incredibly useful and the layout of the library is easy to use. It has excellent facilities. There are a good variety of workshops available and the library environment is very good for studying and working. I use the library for most of the time I spend in college. It makes me concentrate and focus on what I need to do and the staff are very helpful and friendly. It s been a pleasure returning to education, I wish staff were this helpful years ago. Silent Study Areas We have a number of silent study areas across the college, including a self-supported study hub which provides structured time for you to engage in your studies. Study Skills Support Team You can find a wide range of help and support from our specialised Study Skills Support team. Support can be provided for any study-related issues, for example, assignments, course work or exams. The team is based in our Learning Zone on the first floor and is made up of different subject specialists who are experienced in teaching at a range of levels. To meet individual needs, support may be provided on a one-to-one basis, within small groups or through workshops. Specialist support topics, include: } Improve Numeracy and Mathematics. } Improve Literacy and English: speaking, reading, spelling and writing. } Improve Essential / Key Skills: Communication, Application of Number and ICT. } Improve Study Skills: Managing deadlines, proofreading. } Bilingual Support. Workshop Support: Our workshops give you the opportunity to examine a particular study skill in more depth. The aim of the newspaper is to connect all areas of the college and unite the student body via month by month, up-to-date news and reviews from both inside and outside of the college. Our E-Newspaper has articles pertaining to the interests of all students, whether at college or at school. So, whether you want to know what sports clubs are on offer or, how to get involved with one of the numerous activities constantly taking place in the college, such as our vast array of Children In Need events or The Global Enterprise Challenge, Y Llais Ifanc will provide you with the information you need. 11 Fees and financial support The right skills and qualifications can open all kinds of doors. As well as being fun and rewarding, embarking on a foundation degree can help you secure a job or move up the ladder in your chosen career. How much does it cost? Full-time course fees: The fees for full-time university level study have changed but the cost of studying may be less than you think. Thanks to support from the Welsh Government, full-time Welsh students will pay no more than 3,810* per year in 2015/16. Part-time course fees: At the time of going to print, part-time fee levels have not been confirmed for 2015/16. Please call us on or fees-and-financial-support What financial support is available? If you are a part-time student studying at least 25% of an equivalent fulltime course, you may wish to apply for a Tuition Fee Loan so you can defer payment of your course fees. Depending on your household income, there may be a course grant that you are able to apply for to help towards the cost of studying. For further information, please visit Student Finance Wales at: There are a range of grants, schemes, loans and allowances available to help with course fees and living costs. Depending on your personal circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support meaning studying could cost less than you think. The information below will assist you to understand the relevant costs and the financial support available. If you are a full-time student, you can choose to pay tuition fees up front ( 3,810* per year) or you may wish to defer payment by applying for a Tuition Fee Loan. You could also be eligible for a means-tested Learning Grant of up to 5,161 per year and/or a Maintenance Loan to help with your living costs. The Learning Grant does not have to be repaid and any loans you borrow during your studies do not have to be repaid until you have finished the course and are earning more than 21,000 per year (if you are working in the UK). Whether you re studying part-time or full-time, you may also be able to get extra help if you have adults or children who depend upon you financially. This does not have to be repaid until you are earning 21,000 and includes Adult Dependants Grant, Childcare Grant and Parents Learning Allowance. If you have any additional courserelated costs due to a disability, you might be entitled to additional help through the Disabled Students Allowance. REDHOUSE (HEN NEUADD Y DREF) Our specialised creative industries facility It is an exciting time to study for a career in the creative industries. With purpose-built facilities within the refurbished Old Town Hall, now known as the REDHOUSE, we provide the opportunity to study in a unique environment. 13 Refectory The college refectory provides a large, comfy space for you to relax, reflect and refresh with your friends in your free time. The refectory also serves a range of hot and cold food between 9.00am pm. Atrium Café Our atrium café is open from 8.00am 6.00pm and serves a variety of hot and cold refreshments, snacks and meals. Keeping you connected The college is equipped with the latest technological resources and systems to support and enhance your learning experience. There are 19 dedicated IT rooms available for student use, together with a number of open access IT and learning zones throughout the building. Wireless access to learning resources is available throughout the building, enabling you to use your own personal IT equipment or college equipment, wherever you may be in the building. You will be provided with personal network drives and inboxes that will be accessible from any computer with internet access. In addition, you will have access to our virtual learning environment which will provide access to an extensive range of course related materials, again, accessible anytime anywhere. ASPIRE Hair The college s modern high spec hairdressing salons offer a fantastic range of hairstyling and colouring services, all provided by our high quality and professional team of staff and student trainees. Beauty The college s cutting edge beauty training salons are equipped with the latest beauty technology and products including a brand new whirlpool pedicure spa. The salons are open to staff, students and the general public during term- time. All of our services are offered on a contribution basis, providing excellent value for money for our customers. Here We Grow Day Nursery The college has a 56 place nursery, which is fully registered and provides quality day care for infants from three months to eight years. Staff are fully qualified, so you can leave your child knowing they will be well looked after. A daily programme of stimulating activities will provide a perfect mix of care, fun and learning. 14 Merthyr Sport The college s 600m 2 sports hall provides facilities for a wide range of sporting activities, including football, rugby, hockey, netball, basketball, badminton and cricket. The Sports Hall also includes a fully accessible climbing wall. High Tech Sports Science Laboratory In addition, you will have the opportunity to use the college s new fitness suite or use the facilities at the nearby Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre, local outdoor pursuits centres and the fantastic facilities at the University of South Wales Sports Park. Competitive and Team Sports We offer the following team sports at the college: } Men s football. } Women s football. } Netball. } Rugby. Challenger Sports Opportunities Students over 18 years of age will have the exciting opportunity to apply to coach soccer in the USA through Challenger Sports the leading providers of soccer camps in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Duke Of Edinburgh s Award All learners are offered the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh s Award. Sports Team of the Year The College Merthyr Tydfil Ladies Football Team The college has a hugely successful, Ladies Football Team. Key achievements include: } Being named Welsh Colleges 7-a side and 5-a side champions. } Getting through to the 4th round of the British Colleges 11 a side cup then its Quarters, Semis and Finals. } Representing Wales in the Association of Colleges (AOC ) Championships, which are taking place in Bath in March Team members, Chloe Lloyd, Maria Martins and Gemma Evans, have also been selected to play for Wales. 15 Leadership Academy Status The College Merthyr Tydfil is one of only 11 centres in Wales to be awarded Leadership Academy Status by the Sports Leaders UK Leadership Academy National panel. The award acknowledges the contribution that the college, tutors and students have made within the sporting field over a number of years together with the quality of leadership development the college has to offer. Young Ambassador Scheme The college is proud to support Sport Wales Young Ambassador Scheme. We currently have a number of students who are registered on the scheme. The young ambassador movement aims to empower and inspire young people to become role models and leaders through sport, by developing their confidence and skills in order to increase physical participation in others. 16 Providing you with a head start! The College Merthyr Tydfil has a unique partnership with UHOVI to provide a comprehensive range of Higher Education courses on your doorstep! This ground breaking initiative is part of the University of South Wales, providing you with the opportunity to study at your local College Merthyr Tydfil and gain a qualification awarded by the University of South Wales. University of South Wales Prifysgol De Cymru The college s partnership with the University of South Wales enables us to provide enhanced progression pathways to higher education, whilst at the same time providing opportunities for our students to access and draw on a larger bank of skills, resources and development opportunities. How will I benefit? Studying with us will enable you to study locally and achieve an award from the University of South Wales. You ll be able to access the facilities and services of the university which means that you can also become a member of their Students Union. This will provide opportunities for you to socialise and take advantage of student support and discounts. Our partnership also offers you the opportunity to progress to further study by topping up your foundation degree to a full Honours degree through additional study at one of the university s campuses or by enrolling on the new BA Hons Business Degree available at the college. Higher Education Entrepreneurial Student of the Year The Higher Education Entrepreneurial Student of the Year Prize was awarded to Lee Williams. Lee, a Foundation Degree Business student at the college, played a key role in the Trading Places enterprise competition and won the title Best Strategist, receiving commendation by Andrew Tummon, Relationship Manager with NatWest Business Banking. Mr Tummon commented that, Lee consistently displayed a real flare for enterprise and innovation throughout the event. I was extremely impressed with the imaginative ideas he suggested and by the way he obtained buy-in from his team members in order to implement them. 21 Foundation Degree in Creative Industries (Photography) FULL-TIME n LEVEL 4 5 DURATION 2 Years COURSE DESCRIPTION The course will provide a wide range of photographic training through challenging and stimulating assignments. Traditional silver based photography, digital photography, and extensive studio and location work are key elements of the course with a strong emphasis on practice. Assignments are varied and interesting, covering disciplines such as photojournalism, documentary photography, fashion photography, commercial photography, fine art approaches and alternative photographic styles. A sound knowledge of the history of photography and awareness of contemporary developments will support and underpin your photographic practice and encourage you to think critically about photography and its impact on our society and culture in Wales and beyond. YEAR 1 Modules will include: Two major photographic units which will be split into smaller intensive assignment chunks to embrace a broad spectrum of photographic practice. A shorter collaboration unit with an emphasis on live photo shoots that may be based around a festival, foreign exchange or foreign visit or other intensive vocational assignment brief. A contextual unit themes and issues will run throughout the year to complement and support practical units. YEAR 2 In year two you will be able to channel your practice into more specialist areas with the introduction to specialist pathway unit. Professional practice unit will concentrate on preparation for self promotion, business skills, creating web presence as a practicing photographer and gaining invaluable work related experience. You will have the freedom to engage with a wide range of art practices and historical discourses to develop your own, highly individual programme of study. The course is different from many other fine art courses because it encourages your practice across many different disciplines. Running in parallel to your studio practice and art history is an extensive programme of professional studies, which will equip you with the skills to succeed. We organise visits to galleries and museums in the UK and abroad, at every level of the course. How will you study? You will work in the studio using our specialist facilities. Studio practice is either project-led or self-directed. As well as this, you will have formal lectures, workshops, demonstrations, tutorials, visits to galleries, and talks by visiting speakers. Did you know? A qualification in art can lead you to many careers in the creative industries sector. Follow us on Creative What will you study? Although the course is made up of separate modules, you will be encouraged to think and work across many different disciplines such as painting and drawing, 3D, ceramics, printmaking, photography Photoshop, multi-media and installation. The practical element of this course is strengthened by the study of historical and contemporary practices and discourses, which you can use to inform your own work. You will start with experimental and exploratory approaches to materials, processes and technical skills, using a variety of media. The course is made up of a series of projects, so you can explore areas that interest you and develop your independence and creativity. You will have the opportunity to specialise in specific disciplines at the end of the first year. At the end of the second year, successful students can choose to progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) Art Practice at the University of South Wales or any similar course in U.K. ENTRY 200 UCAS tariff points or equivalent at A-level. Additional criteria: Interview and portfolio GCSE five at grade C or above. Case Study Andrew Wakeham left school with only two GCSE s and was unsure about his future career until he enrolled on the level 2 Diploma in Art and Design and Welsh Baccalaureate at the college. After successfully gaining a distinction, he was able to progress on to the level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design prior to embarking on the Foundation Degree in Photography. Andrew said I ve enjoyed the intensive creativity as well as the social interaction, it has made me feel much more optimistic about a future career in the Creative Industries. I am looking forward to year two. Andrew, who was awarded the annual student prize for the best photograph, also commented on the diversity of modules delivered on the course. Portraiture, experimental darkroom and digital work or work with a fine art or graphic slant can be generated. 24 Student Case Study Deborah Gray, Foundation Degree Care Studies Debbie enrolled on the Foundation Degree Care Studies in September Debbie said Going back into education after numerous years away was a forbidding thought, I was apprehensive as I lacked confidence in my ability to produce the work that would be needed. As a full-time mum I wanted to be a good role model for my children, I also knew it was important to gain a qualification for when I went back to employment. I found the Foundation Degree very hard and nerve racking at first but with the support off the tutors and students alike it has enabled me to achieve good results in my course work and helped me to gain confidence in my ability. During my two year course I have been volunteering at a residential care home which has given me a great insight into the hard work that goes into caring for the elderly and has prepared me for entering back into full-time employment. My future aspirations are to help vulnerable people, specifically to help abused women/children which is a cause that is close to my heart and I believe that the Foundation Degree has helped me get closer to my desired goal Foundation Degree in Childhood Studies FULL-TIME n LEVEL 4 5 DURATION 2 years COURSE DESCRIPTION This course aims to provide an opportunity to develop and extend the knowledge of qualified and experienced workers in the field of childcare. Student Case Study Phillip Watkins Foundation Degree in ICT Phillip left high school in 1998 having been successful in an application for a modern apprenticeship in machine printing and graphical communication. He completed his apprenticeship and worked for the company for 15 years prior to being made redundant when the factory closed. Looking for a change in career, Phillip enrolled on the foundation degree in ICT in September Phillip commented I have been very impressed with the new look of the college. Its modern design and state of the art equipment provides a first class learning experience for its students. I must say a big thank you to all of the tutors I have had at the college. Going into the course I had no prior experience with any of the applications used, no experience with computer languages, and hadn t been in a learning environment for a long time. My tutors have made the learning experience much easier and enjoyable. 27 Sport, Exercise and Health Foundation Degree in Sports Science: Exercise and Health FULL & PART-TIME n LEVEL 4 5 DURATION 2 years full-time, 3 years parttime COURSE DESCRIPTION There s never been a better time to study a course in this area of study. The Government recognises the importance of exercise for the nation s health, and is investing heavily in health and exercise programmes within communities. The course is specifically for individuals, who are currently working and seeking to improve their promotional opportunities, or those who intend to seek employment in the health fitness, health and exercise sector. The course will provide you with the skills that will enable you to effectively deliver manage and design exercise programmes. Your experience will be helping people on the road to better health, tackling the problems of cardiovascular disease, stroke, type II diabetes and obesity that are wide spread in South Wales. You will study modules that cover all elements of working in the fitness industry. MODULES INCLUDE: } Introduction to anatomy and physiology } Fitness testing and exercise prescription } Nutrition } Exercise therapy and rehabilitation. Three of the modules are purely practical and based in the workplace, so you can apply what you ve learnt in the classroom to the real world. You will also have the opportunity to acquire industry recognised REPs qualifications that include: Level II gym instructor and level III exercise referral. instructor s level II award. Teaching sessions are in small groups and are interactive, with lots of discussion. Assessment will be through a mixture of written assignments, examinations, presentations, practical work and case studies. Where next? You could go on to a variety of careers in the health and fitness sector.
