1 Higher Education Newsletter April 2013 CAREERS FAIR Employers came together on 27th March 2013 to provide guidance and information on careers in the private, public and voluntary sectors along with graduate opportunities, internships and management training schemes. Information and presentations were provided by leading employers. Denise Mumby, Manager, HE Admissions and Administration office said: The careers fair came about following student feedback. A project team worked together to launch the careers fair and as we are always ready to respond to student views and opinions - this could be an annual event. Continues inside... Keeping you in the know
2 CAREERS FAIR Lydia Channon studying BA Criminological Studies said: The careers fair was a great occasion for students to speak to employers about career and graduate opportunities. I was part of the project team for the careers fair and found it very satisfying to see all our hard work come to fruition to achieve this event. My personal contribution was to recruit Austin Mitchell MP who gave a fascinating talk on careers in the political arena. I think it is definitely an event that should be available annually. Kim Hannath from the Achilles Centre Grimsby said: It was the first time I had visited the University Centre and thought the venue was lovely and perfect for such an event. Staff were so friendly and accommodating. My colleague Emma Warrener and I certainly enjoyed it and the time passed so quickly. We will be more than pleased to support these events in the future. SFE will inform you if they need copies of financial evidence to support your application. Deadline It is advisable that applications are submitted before the deadline to ensure that funding is in place at start of the term. The deadline for students continuing with their studies is: 28th June 2013 If you need any further information or require assistance with any aspect of your student finance, help is always available from: Higher Education Admissions and Administration Office University Centre Grimsby, Ground Floor (near Reception) Room 0H02. 4 Submitting your work for marking The majority of students will be familiar with submitting their work through the HE Admissions and Administration office via the UCG reception. Students will probably also be familiar with having to queue during the busy periods. There are over 20,000 pieces of individual work handled through the HE Admissions and Administration office annually. This requires a rigorous process to ensure all of this work is receipted, logged, safely stored and monitored right up to the point you receive it back; marked and with feedback. With the volume of students work there are times when having to queue at the UCG reception has been unavoidable. The HE Admissions and Administration office has been looking at implementing a new process that would not require students to have to come into the Institute to submit or collect work and to avoid any queuing. At the start of the term in September 2012, a pilot scheme was launched to provide students with an easier process which was an electronic method to submit work and receive feedback. A large number of students involved in the pilot scheme have been submitting their work electronically through a facility called Turnitin. The HE Admissions and Administration team download the work and when it is marked the team send feedback individually to each student via their Institute address. The pilot scheme for electronic submission has worked well. There are less numbers of students visiting the UCG Reception to submit and collect work which has significantly reduced queuing - GOOD NEWS FOR STUDENTS! The chart below shows the proportion of students work that has been received through the electronic method during the first semester in 2012/13. Turnitin Reception The HE Admissions and Administration office has addressed initial problems that have occurred since the pilot scheme was launched. Due to the ongoing success of the pilot scheme over the last few months, it is anticipated that more students work will be submitted electronically through Turnitin where appropriate in the new academic year 2013/14. For those students who are involved in the pilot scheme see the top tips below: - Take care to submit your work electronically to the correct website: - When creating your username use your student number for both your forename and surname. If you haven t done this, it can be easily updated by clicking on to YOUR NAME / USER INFO on the top right hand section when you long in. - Always attach the completed front page to your work. The electronic front page is available on moodle. - Ensure that your submitted work has been saved with your student number. Your marked work with feedback is sent to your Institute student address, which is your student reference number followed So, remember to keep checking S REMEMBER: If you need any advice or assistance with Turnitin, the HE Admissions and Administration Office is here to help you.

7 Higher Education Newsletter Students Union Update by Student President, Laura Seward Laura Seward HE Student President Keeping you in the know The Students Union is getting involved with various issues across the UCG. We now have a suggestions post box situated outside the Students Union room 0H04 in the UCG. We want to hear your suggestions and ideas on enhancing the student experience. Some of the Students Union team attended the UCG s open event on 13th March to gather the views of potential students on what their expectations would be of a Students Union and ideas for Freshers activities. A questionnaire was completed by 60 visitors to the open event. The main purpose of a Students Union indicated by respondents to the survey was to support and represent students. From the responses, 29% stated that their reason for attending Freshers activities would be to meet new people. 26% of respondents indicated that they would like to attend a Pub Crawl at Freshers week. The charts below provide further details. Questionnaires are available outside the Students Union room 0H04 if you would like to complete and post in the suggestion box. The Students Union development team is working on different areas to support students and plans to be fully operational by the new academic year in September. In the meantime, the SU is happy to hear your views and offer help with any concerns. Since the Students Union is in the process of becoming established, please bear with us while we are still setting up.
8 Remember to collect your work The HE Admissions and Administration office safely stores students marked work for as long as possible to give students every opportunity to collect it at their convenience. There is a point in time where students work must be cleared away to make room for the next intake of work that is submitted for marking. We are now fast approaching that time and space needs to be made available for the intake of students semester two work. Students are respectfully reminded of the following cut off dates to collect their work, after which time the work will be destroyed. Three days before work is destroyed the Programme Leader will be notified. SEMESTER DATES WORK COLLECTION DEADLINE DATE FIRST SEMESTER (10th September 2012 to 18th January 2013) 3rd May 2013 SECOND SEMESTER (21st January 2012 to 31st May 2013) 11th October 2013 Dates for your diary Deadline date to collect first semester work 3rd May 2013 Deadline date for student funding applications 28th June 2013 Re-sit Exams Period 12th to 16th August 2013 Deadline date for re-sit assessments 16th August 2013 Start of Term Academic Year 2013/2014 9th September 2013 Graduation th October 2013
