7 CNP S SMAT GID: TWO PATS 1. Advanced Metering System (AMS) 2.2 Million Advanced Meter System (AMS) meters to be installed during at a cost of $540 million inclusive of a $150 million DOE fund contribution AMS will provide for two-way communication between customers and market participants (i.e., EP, QSE, Aggregators, Authorized 3 rd Parties, and TDSPs) 2. Intelligent Grid Initial implementation of Intelligent Grid (IG) by 2012 at a cost of $100 million inclusive of a $50 million DOE fund contribution IG is comprised of system sensors, monitors, high-speed communications and data-trending software designed to real-time insight and analysis of distribution system to provide greater reliability, safety, choice and flexibility Vision: CNP seeks to enable the Texas electricity market to extract the full functionality of the Smart Grid by supporting individual management of electricity consumption, fostering adoption of market-driven programs and achieving maximum operational readiness and efficiency 7
8 CNP S VISION FO THE SMAT GID Advance Metering Systems (AMS) will provide: 1. Detailed information on usage, 2. Significantly faster and less intrusive service for reads, 3. Faster remote turn on/off, 4. Meter checks for functionality working, removal, tilt 5. Two-way communication between customers and market participants (i.e., EP, QSE, Aggregators, Authorized 3rd Parties, and TDSPs) 6. Back office systems to analyze, retry for missing, estimate accurately, prepare for the market 7. Everyman s portal to access the data Cost: 2.2 Million Advanced Meter System (AMS) meters to be installed during at a cost of $540 million inclusive of a $150 million DOE fund contribution 8

Notification Transformer and facility overload predictive analysis Aggregate 15 minute loads to determine peak loading levels and duration to determine if transformers (and potentially other equipment) should be replaced prior to failure 6. Sensing plus usage analysis to quickly determine diversion eceive a notice from the meter about unplanned outage with a tilt and then usage drops off from norm, investigate tampering Numerous additional initiatives being considered taking advantage of the Smart Grid infrastructure, functionality and data 25
